My calendar says Canada Day is July 1.

I think it's a plot to confuse us United Statesians, eh?  ;D

Under the federal Holidays Act, Canada Day is always observed on July 1 unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case it is officially observed on July 2. Most provinces observe the statutory holiday on July 2 in that situation as well, although events generally take place on July 1 even though it is not legally a holiday.

If it falls on a Saturday, the following Monday is generally also a day off for those businesses ordinarily closed on Saturdays.

The Consulate here is celebrating on Thursday because, well, July 1 is on a Sunday and they're not at work that day!

So, just to get ready, here is the definitive guide to how to speak Canadian!!

I'm sure by "celebrating on Thursday" they meant they would take the day off on Thursday ... but just like the 4th of July doesn't get celebrated on the 2nd (or the 5th) just because Independence Day falls on a Sunday, the people at our consulate will be celebrating Canada Day on Canada Day.

Here, most businesses will be open on Canada day and will close on the 2nd.
