the short story says  "they stayed in the little apartment he favored because it could be left any time"     why would he leave quick??   split up to be with jack??  bill collectors??  follow jobs? 
what do you think??

I always figured it meant they had a month-to-month lease so they could, if necessary, move at short notice for the reasons you mention except for Ennis to be with Jack. Even though we know they fell behind on the bills, I'd hate to think of Ennis sneaking out on creditors. Maybe it was just in case he needed to take a ranch job that wasn't within "daily commuting distance" of Riverton.
