A recommendation for some romantic Valentine music:

Yo-Yo Ma plays Ennio Morricone, a collection of film scores from Cinema Paradiso, The Mission, Once Upon a Time in America, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Untouchables and more.

I've been listening to it for several days and am all mellowed out and ready for Valentine's Day!

February is also Morricone month in New York with showings of these films, and (the only thing I'll miss seeing on Feb 25) he'll receive an honorary Oscar.

In the old news department:

I've enjoyed listening to Traffic's The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys today while exercising. Hidden Treasure is a great song for exercising to and reminds me of BBM. This album is from 1971, but I swear I saw Traffic in the late '60s playing these songs. What is the title song all about? Well, I thought it referred to the band itself since Steve Winwood is definitely vertically challenged.  ::)

The album cover is quite a trip. You see, my FRiends, there used to be these things called ALBUMS, they were made out of vinyl, and they were as big as dinner plates! And the covers were so big, you could frame them and put them on your wall! Anyway, this one had one of the band members in pink tight jeans, with Steve Winwood behind him, his fingers showing in the gap between the guy's pants, and a black guy in the middle, dressed in camoflage, LOL!!

Here is my favorite song from Il Divo's Siempre CD. It is in Spanish, and means "A Life Without Love." I will also give you the translation into Spanish, but it may not be very good, and I could use some help!!

"La Vida Sin Amor"

Cuando el sol cae un dia mas
se que no quieres dormir
La pasión nos vuelve a desnudar
Porque sin ti yo no se vivir

Y en la oscuridad enloquecer
A un hombre y una mujer

LA VIDA SIN AMOR
ES UN FUEGO SIN PASIÓN
LA VIDA SIN AMOR
NO SIRVE YA A MI CORAZÓN
PUES OLVIDE AMAR

Lagrimas que nunca lloré
Suplicas que no te di
un mundo .igual que solo sabe huir
dejando atrás todo mi sufrir

Y en la oscuridad piel sobre piel
El alma calma su sed

LA VIDA SIN AMOR
ES UN FUEGO SIN PASIÓN
LA VIDA SIN AMOR
NO SIRVE YA A MI CORAZÓN
PUES OLVIDE AMAR

Y en la oscuridad piel sobre piel
El alma calma su sed

LA VIDA SIN AMOR
ES UN FUEGO SIN PASIÓN
LA VIDA SIN AMOR
NO SIRVE YA A MI CORAZÓN
PUES OLVIDE AMAR

Here is the translation. Warning: steamy hot lyrics!!

LIfe without Love, Il Divo - CD Siempre 2006

When the sun sets one more day

I know you don´t want to sleep

Passion makes us nude again

Because without you I don´t know how to live

And darkness sees a man and a woman go mad

(Chorus)

Life without love

is a fire without passion

life without love

my heart doesn´t work anymore

You see, it forgot how to love.

Tears I never cried

Pleas I never gave you

And a similar world that only knows how to run

Leaving all the pain behind

And in the darkness, skin over skin, the soul calms its thirst

For Scott and whomever else is interested. A discussion of Sting's Songs From the Labyrith with the music of John Dowland is up one page, or click this link:

Okay, I know the suspense has been killing you, so I will come out with it now. The song "Spiritual" by Pat Metheny which AP cites as her inspiration for the "dozy embrace" flashback reminds me very strongly of another song. And that song is...Let it Be, by John Lennon/Paul McCartney. Anybody else feel the same way??

I love "Spiritual."  I guess the very deliberate playing at the beginning of "Let it Be" might be evocative of it.  The song that I somehow associate with it, though, is "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley.

I'm not familiar with Jeff Buckley...hmm...this would be the second independent Beatles/BBM correlation that I am aware of.  Gustavo said in NYC that the simple chord progression at the beginning of Wings is similar to that in Blackbird, but something like 'then it goes in one way and Blackbird another.'

Interesting, anyhow...

Lynne, I'm guessing you would really like the Jeff Buckley song.  You can listen to 30 seconds of it on iTunes.  (I prefer the 6:53 version of it, not the longer live version.)

Everyone in Denver is buzzing about the concert Friday by organist Paul Jacobs, chair of the organ dept. at the Julliard Schoo at age 30! I'm so sorry I missed it!!
