I must say I've never encountered any type of negativity regarding fan fiction. I've never gotten any hate mail, have certainly never sent any and haven't seen people flaming fics in comments either.

and I hope it stays that way O0

When people talk about "hate mail" what exactly does that mean? Do people write the authors letting them know they don´t like their stories, or is it more personal?

You probably started putting your stories into the fandom after the fandom wars died down, which was about six or eight months ago.  A large number of people left the fandom and things died down.  One of the things that fueled the fire with me (and Karen's right, it got personal - very personal) was that someone was messaging groups of people telling them that I was somehow responsible for the C&D that went to Jenna Sinclair.  Apparently that accusation was believed without question, even though no one had any reason to believe that I would have access to the people who would act and produce a C&D.  After several more C&D's, one of which came to me in April 2007, I got an apology from one of the people who had been privy to that gossip, who told me that she knew now that I had nothing to do with it.  Of COURSE I had nothing to do with it - I'm not friends with Annie Proulx's lawyers!  I also don't believe that fanfiction is wrong, so I wouldn't report anyone for writing it.  Subsequently in an interview Proulx gave, she apparently got activist about shutting down fanfiction after some dolts mailed her their "rewritten versions" of BBM asking for her approval, and she must have sent her lawyer around to search the internet and target some of us whose work was easy to find on a search as a retaliation against people who were dumb enough to wave it under her nose.

And I saw some of them -- Louise isn't exaggerating. For some of us, the "fanfic wars" were also our first experience with receiving hate mail.

Oh, I never doubted. I'm sure some people feel every bit as passionate about fan fiction as they feel about "the original," but learning this makes me glad I was really on the periphery of the fan-fic world. My stuff wasn't much read, but I received a few lovely compliments from a few people who did read it, and that was more than sufficient. I wrote to fulfill a need that I had, I hesitated to get involved in posting stories (in view of why I wrote them, posting struck as being a little like taking my clothes off in public  ;D ) and the fact that a few nice people enjoyed them was "gravy."

No, Louise isn't exaggerating.

I really never understood the links that some people went to.
It seemed simple to me.  If you don't like a fic, don't read it. !

It was more personal then anything I believe.

What a sad waste of energy.

Just seems to me like some people had way too much invested. They need to get a life.  :-\

I think you´re right. I came in pretty late so I probably missed it.

Oh my... >:(

It would be interesting to hear Annie Proulx´ reasons for disliking fan fiction (as long as no one is making money off of it). To me, it would be the ultimate compliment.
But since she created Jack and Ennis, I´d probably forgive her anything

sorry you had to go through all that, Louise. Good to hear things have calmed down

NavyVet-

The trick to being "friended" is to comment so your name gets known. I generally don't have trouble being friended because I have, like Janice (  :-* ) been around for a long time, leave insipid comments and mind my manners. If you are in the middle of a story that gets locked, maybe you can appeal to someone who knows and trusts you and who has access to the story to intervene (with the writer) on your behalf. What are you locked out of currently?

There was a thread about that somewhere around here, but I forget where.  ???

I remember that the word "pornographic" was used, and that people were apparently expecting her to "approve" their different endings to her own story (which would annoy me, too, if I were her).

If my mind serves me right, and lately I am not going to bank on it that much.  But what I remember her saying
was that she had received some fanfic written by gay men, that were telling Annie that her being a woman, could not
possibly understand the truth in the story she had written.  So they then set about rewriting it with pornographic content
and other endings that they deemed more proper.  She was very incensed by that.  Who could blame her.  My idea is
however, I have seen very few stories that are written by gay men, and she may well have been mistaken on that item.

That sounds about right.

I simply cannot imagine having the intestinal fortitude to send a piece of fan fiction to the author on whose work the story is based. But then I'm famously a coward. ...  ;D

I wouldn't call it cowardly, I think it's nothing but common sense and manners.
