Dearest Dottie...Peace be with you and Bob and your dogs . I just read your sad news about your beloved Bailey. I hope to find an appropriate e-card to send. Tears filled my eyes as I read your e-mail and as I write this. I am not good with words as others of the BetterMost Community but maybe I will find some words to send you soon.

Epitaph to a Dog

Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferosity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.
The praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just tribute to the Memory of
BOATSWAIN, a DOG,

who was born in Newfoundland May 1803

and died at Newstead Nov. 18, 1808.

When some proud Son of Man returns to Earth,
Unknown by Glory, but upheld by Birth,
The sculptor’s art exhausts the pomp of woe,
And stories urns record that rests below.
When all is done, upon the Tomb is seen,
Not what he was, but what he should have been.
But the poor Dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his Master’s own,
Who labors, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonored falls, unnoticed all his worth,
Denied in heaven the Soul he held on earth –
While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.
Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power –
Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgust,
Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
Thy smiles hypocrisy, thy words deceit!
By nature vile, ennoble but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
Ye, who perchance behold this simple urn,
Pass on – it honors none you wish to mourn.
To mark a friend’s remains these stones arise;
I never knew but one – and here he lies.

That is a beautiful thought to read after an extremely traumatic past week trying to be a pillar of strength to a couple of offspring, and taking their frustrations and anger at life.
When all is said and done, the best support we can give to people is to be like a dog. To just love them unreservedly and unconditionally.

Rob.

As you know from the banner a lot of Southern California is on fire.  I have lived here many years now and am use to the drought and the fact that every fall we have a very high incidence of wildfires but every few years we seem to have one that becomes a firestorm.  A full sixty five miles of highway 15 north and south bound was closed today.  I am so glad the college suspended classes today and tomorrow so my husband was not away from home when the highway closed, since he would have had to drive to Orange County then east to San Bernadino then south again to get home if he had.  If we stand on the deck in our back yard we can see the orange glow in the hills a full 10 miles south of us.  It's 9 o'clock at night and it's still 83 degrees and the wind is gusting at 40 MPH

I have an elderly friend who lives in Rancho Bernando and was evacuated at 8 this morning.  She went to friends in Del Mar on the coast, since the fires never make it to the coast, tonight I hear that Del Mar is under manditory evacuation.  I don't know where my friend is now.  Her son called me from NYC and he is terrified because now he can't reach her.  She doesn't have a cell phone, she's afraid of technology.  She has heart trouble and asthma all this smoke is very bad for her.

I have friends in Lakeside and Poway who have been forced to evacuate with small children, pets and horses.  Sitting here watching all the live feeds it is terrifying, like a little glimpse of hell on earth

Ooooh ... Dottie,

We, all of us, in Oz feel for you. It is making news here, because bushfire is one of the things we have in common, and we understand what you are going through.

Hope you will all be ok.

I hope you soon get good drenching rain, Dottie. That always seems to do the trick during the bushfire season here in Australia.

Stay safe Dottie.  :-*

It truly is a terrible and frighteningly sad day Dottie..  Even for people that live in So Calif.  who are used
to these kinds of conditions.  It is so much more disasterous than has happened in my memory..A much wider
area involved.  I dont ever remember an area as large as from Magic Mt. to San Diego being involved..
Be safe and be well..I will be thinking of you..Jp wagoneer lives in that area also..Hope he is ok too...

Satellite Photo of California Fires showing the massive amounts of smoke and debrie in the atmosphere with fire areas highlighted in red

In San Diego County alone 300,000 people have been evacuated and the dozen wildfires had burned more than 700 homes and set 245,957 acres _ 384 square miles _ ablaze, and the destruction may only be the start. The wildfires claimed one life, in San Diego County, and injured 42. At least 16 of the injured were firefighters. at 8 am this morning estimates are 0-1% contained.

Today's forecast calls for hotter temperatures and more explosive wind gusts.   :'(
