Self absorption is one of the major character flaws in the "hero" on this show.  I have a real aversion to selfish, self absorbed people so I don't find the show entertaining at all it just annoys me.

What are some of your favorite ELR episodes?

SOME of the episodes?? Looks like MOST of them!!

I like to watch it but I didn't see the original. I watch the reruns that come on at ten oclock at night here. Sometimes I watch while I post! I don't know the names of the shows....havent' seen all of them I think.

I like the brother and the parents. They are hilarious.

I liked the episode where Ray let Debra have the bathroom to herself and she decorated it so pretty... ;)

Ray was so cute in these earlier seasons.

Here is a clip from Season One Episode 10:

Highlights from Turkey Or Fish?

Debra decides to cook a fish for Thanksgiving and Ray isn't very happy about it.

Please post your own Everybody Loves Raymond videos if you have any!  :D

Edit: I split up these videos and I am posting them separately to hopefully speed up this thread a little.

I think the one you are referring to Jess is called "The Sigh" from Season Seven. I love the big water fight they have in the bathroom at the end.  :D

I laugh so hard while watching this show! I really like the one that shows Robert taking Deborah and Raymond to the hospital in to have a baby, and the boys both wind up in the back seat trying to help her.

Another one--Raymond sees Deb crying and she tries to get him to cry, but he can't. Then at the end he tries to make himself cry, but winds up dancing to Lady Marmalade or whatever that Patti LaBelle song is called. That one is so funny!

They are all pretty funny, tho.

Hey Shasta! Yeah, those were both very funny episodes. The one where the boys help Debra deliver Ally is "Ally's Birth" from Season 5.

I think the other episode you are talking about is called "Alone Time" from Season 4.

I like the earlier episodes the best (Seasons 1-5). Once the show started winning awards, it almost seemed as if Ray Romano suddenly realized he was very funny and his character started to develop an arrogant attitude. Ray became much more bossy, loud and self assured (for lack of a better word). Did you notice this too? In the earlier seasons, Ray was rather shy, quiet and submissive. He was cuter in the earlier seasons, in my opinion. But the entire series was very good, and I like them all!  :D

Gosh, I don't know Shasta. These videos take a very long time for me to watch since I'm on dial-up. So, I only watched the first ELR clip I posted. Maybe the other three are defective, or maybe I didn't post them correctly. I will go back and try to watch the second video, or at least a little of it (These 4 minute videos take about 45 minutes to load).

If this isn't the case Shasta, maybe you could send Phillip a pm and ask him about it. He's very good with computers and he was the one who set up this Youtube on Bettermost, so he might have an answer for you.  :D

I never found Ray to be all that self absorbed. Well, maybe a little. Okay, a lot! But I've always felt Marie was the most self centered character in the show. Frank is a very close second. You're right though. Ray can be very self centered too. In fact, all of the characters can be like that. But I don't think Ray is anywhere close to Marie or Frank when it comes to self absorption or self centeredness.

I'm sorry, David. I didn't explain very well. It's not just the Bettermost YouTubes---it's YouTubes videos as well. Maybe all videos. The line that shows time passing travels across the screen, but no video---just whatever is on the screen at the beginning--and it's still. Also no sound even tho my speaker is on. I will restart my computer later and see if that helps, but this has never happened before. I may have to take it to the shop.

We've talked about this before David... I voted no I'm not a fan because I don't really care for the show but I do watch it from time to time because both my Dad and my husband love it like you do.   And I admit that there have been times that it has caught my attention and I did actually laugh out loud, so while I am NOT a fan I don't hate it either.

I enjoyed the episode where Debra's parents were spending Thanksgiving with the Barones after their divorce and her father brought his new girlfriend, every one expected it to be this sweet young thing and rallied around to support her Mom, but instead it was an OLD lady, older than him, older than his wife.  Pretty cute episode.  I liked the girl  scout cookie one too.

We never had the full run on any channel at peak time but I do love watching the show on the paramount cable channel.

I often find myself saying that is so you! Or that is so my sister or that is so me! at it!

Paramount shows lots of shows, but ELR, King of Queens and Everybody Hates Chris are my faves.

I didn't even realize ELR was broadcast internationally until Melissa told me she and her boyfriend were watching it in Holland.  :D

Yeah, I see a little bit of myself in both Ray and Robert. I'm always saying "That sooo you, David" when I watch it. I'm glad you like the show, Kelda. This gives us both one more thing in common with each other!  :D

KELDA!! Didn't you just hit 2000 posts a few days ago? And now look at you! You're over 2300 now! You've been posting up a storm, haven't you?  ;)  :D

Good for you Kelda! I'm proud of you!  :D

And now, I gotta get my butt in bed! And why? Because it's after 4:00 am here in Indy and I have to get up in less than 2 hours!

But I'll keep looking for the "No Fat" clip! I hope I can find it.  :D

Highlights from Season One Episode One

Pilot Episode

Notice how physically agressive Marie is in these earlier episodes. Somewhere around the 10th episode of Season One, the producers of ELR sat down with Doris Roberts to discuss the character of Marie. They decided to make Marie less aggresive physically, but keep her "buttinsky" nosey, bossy and passive aggressive qualities intact.

About the same time, the producers also sat down with Brad Garrett to tweak Robert a little bit. They agreed Robert should be a little bit more pitiful. "You mean like Eeyore the Donkey from Winnie The Pooh?" asked Brad.

EXACTLY!!!

And so, a new and improved Marie and Robert were born, sometime during the middle of Season One.

Wow! I think I have too many videos posted in here because it now takes me about 10 minutes to open up this thread!

Oh well, I'll just suffer through it because I'm planning to post even more ELR videos if I can find them!  :D

Did you notice all the differences in the Pilot episode? The living room is totally different; different furniture, different curtains, and even a different front door! Ray and Debra's master bedroom as also quite different in the pilot. The bed and dresser are different and there are no visible dormer windows. The kitchen has a different stove too.

This was because the budget was so tight for the pilot episode they had to borrow items from other sets, including Frank and Marie's kitchen which is actually the kitchen from the old All In The Family set. They only had use of one camera in the Pilot episode and they completely forgot to create an Intro for the opening show. The Intro was filmed in Ray's own backyard just several days before the Pilot aired on television. They filmed the entire intro in one day, and then quickly changed it for Episode two.

The twins are different too! Not only are the twins different but so are the names! In the Pilot, the twin's names are Matthew and Gregory. They decided to use Madylin Sweeten's real twin brothers, Sawyer and Sullivan staring in episode two, and changed the names to Michael and Geoffrey.

It was a rough start for Everybody Loves Raymond, but it sure did turn out good, didn't it?  :D

Kelda, I think you are talking about "Robert's Rodeo" from Season 4.

Robert: "He got me in my.....umm....... upper thigh area...."

Ray: "It sounds like he got you in the ass!"

I think one of the funniest lines in Everybody Loves Raymond is from Season Three's "Big Shots". Ray doesn't want Robert riding in the car with him up to Cooperstown to meet the Mets because Ray thinks Robert's feet stink. Things don't really work out in Cooperstown and Robert never gets to meet the Mets, so they begin arguing with each other on the way home. Eventually Robert reclines his car seat, takes his shoes off and places his feet up on the dashboard of Ray's car. Ray is driving and he tries to ignore it at first, but finally he can't take it any longer, and says "We must have...(shakes his head in disbelief)... we must have hit a skunk that crawled out of the ass of another skunk."

Here's some highlights from "Father Knows Least" Season Two, Episode Two

(about 3,5 minutes)

Ray and Debra attend an "Active Listening" class after having problems disciplining Ally. But Ally isn't the only one Ray uses his newly learned techniques on!

Here's a little known fact about Everybody Loves Raymond.

Did ya'll know that Ray Romano hated the title of this show. In fact he still does hate it even to this day. He was afraid the title "Everybody Loves Raymond" would send out the wrong message to the public, and they would incorrectly interpret it to mean "Everybody Loves Raymond Romano".

Ray spent weeks trying to convince the higher powers to consider a different name for the show. He jotted all kinds of different titles down on pieces of paper and brought the list to the studio with him several times a week. These lists were filled with names like "Ray's House", "The Barone Family", "Just Across The Street"....all kinds of different things, but in the end the producers insisted the show should be named "Everybody Loves Raymond".

Ray still has those pieces of paper too!  :D

Wow! This thread is really running slow! I almost forgot what I was going to say! Does that ever happen to any of you?

No. Of course not. Ya'll are smart enough to NOT have dial-up!

Another great ELR line (or actually LINES in this case) is from "Baggage" from Season 7. In this episode, Debra and Ray return home from a trip and park their suitcase on the landing of the staircase. Nobody wants to move it to the bedroom and so it sits there for about a week. Ray has to leave on a business trip and Debra is upset because Ray won't take the suitcase with him. Why? If he takes it, he gives in to Debra and Debra wins, so Ray decides to pack his clothes in plastic shopping bags instead. Just before Ray walks out the door he places a piece of Roquefort cheese inside the suitcase and then quickly darts out the front door. The next morning the house is beginning to smell quite ripe from the cheese.

Marie walks through the front door and sniffs the air with a disgusted look on her face...

Marie: "Debra. Are you cooking something?"

Debra: "No Marie. I'm not cooking anything."

Marie:" Well there's an aroma in here!"

Debra: "You know, I smell it too but I can't figure out where it's coming from."

They both start investigating the smell, and finally Debra tracks it to the suitcase. Debra unzips it, reaches her hand in there and pulls out the old, nasty piece of cheese.

Marie:" DEBRA!! You can't keep cheese in a suitcase!!"

"Baggage" ended up being one of those episodes created from a real life experience. Actually about a third of the episodes were created based on the real life experiences of the writers. Sometimes if the writers couldn't think up a plot for the episode, they would all sit around the table and talk about what happened to each of them during the week. Sooner or later, somebody would mention something they could work with, and an episode would be created.

I think this is why the show is so lovable. Most of the episodes seem so real, as if they could actually happen to us. And in some cases, they probably have!

And now we know why!  :D

Somewhere around the middle of Season Five, the ELR producers started phasing out the use of intros at the beginning of each episode. Only occasionally did we see an intro during the Sixth Season. The producers did create a cute intro for Season Seven and Eight, but they only used them several times for each season. Instead, they would place the ELR stamp in the opening scene along with a few credits. And why did they decide to do this? Because the producers felt they needed all the air time possible in order to tell each story. And those extra 30 seconds were important and valuable. So, for the most part, we didn't see the intros any longer.

Below is the intro from Season Eight, Jungle Love....

(This clip is about 30 seconds)

**Edit: I just saw Phillip's message about multiple videos, so I moved this second video into a different post.**

Season One, Episode Four

Highlights from "Standard Deviation"

In this episode Robert convinces Ray and Debra to take an IQ test. After the results are revealed, Ray learns that Debra scored 15 points higher, which drives him crazy... or does it? Later in the show, Robert announces he made a "mistake" and it was actually Ray who scored higher on the test, driving Debra nuts.

Notice Patricia Heaton's short hair in Season One. This was the only season in which she wore her hair this short. Starting with Season Two she has longer hair and she keeps it long throughout the rest of the series.  :D

Hey David,

I just love Everybody Loves Raymond.  It's never really made it onto primetime telly here in the UK.  We always used to watch it over breakfast, making a mad dash to school just as it finished.

I cant think of my favourite episode, but one of the most memorable moments for me was watching Robert and his new bride taking the floor for their first dance ... to Elvis Presley!!!

Susie

Hi Susie!  :D

I can't think of the title of the Elvis song they play at the end of that episode. Actually, "Robert's Wedding" is a two parter, ep. 24 and 25 from Season 7. I know the song, but I don't know the title of it.  Does anyone know what it is?  :D

I love all those episodes when Brad Garrett dances. Did you see "Snow Day" from Season 6? Brad does a funny dance in that one too!

All of the ELR series have been shown and also re-run on primetime Australian television. At the present time, they are not being aired here; however, I have no doubt that they will be re-run again, at some time in the future. ELR is very popular here in Oz.

You are so knowledgeable about ELR, David, I have no doubt that you could write a PhD thesis on the subject! Perhaps you have already done so, and that's what your dipping into for all your excellent contributions to this thread. Should we be calling you Dr David, PhD? LOL.  :D

Season One, Episode Two

I Love You

This is the very first episode after the Pilot aired and it is obvious the cast and crew still need to work out some rough edges. They became more organized with each episode, but they didn't fully have their act together until the beginning of Season Two. Notice they are now using the regular set for ELR, and it is this same set we will see during the rest of the series.

Also notice Ray's reaction when Robert hugs him towards the end of this clip. Ray Romano hates to be hugged, and this is a very real response we are seeing in this clip. We see similar responses from Ray during the rest of the series.

In this episode, Ray and Debra begin to wonder why Ray has such a difficult time saying I love you.

In this next clip, Ray is disappointed to find out his prized Mickey Mantle baseball is a fake and it was actually Frank who signed the ball. Ray decides he won't tell such lies to his children, but ends up in a conundrum when Ally asks Ray about Santa Claus.

As I mentioned earlier, Ray Romano was not at all comfortable hugging other people. Peter Boyle who plays Frank in the series took Ray Romano into his home when Ray first moved to California just before the series started, and Ray began looking at Peter as somewhat of a father figure from that moment on. Near the end of this episode there is supposed to be a hugging scene between Frank and Ray. Since Ray hates hugging, the producers decided to allow Ray to decide for himself during filming whether or not to hug Peter.

Ray decided NOT to give Peter Boyle a hug at the end of this episode. Instead he gave him a kiss on the forehead; probably something even more difficult for Ray to do than giving someone a hug. This caught the entire cast and crew by surprise, but it just shows us the tremendous bonds that were beginning to form between some of the cast members. Few people know about this fact, and it makes this particular episode all the more beautiful and touching.

Okay, I admit this next one is NOT one of my favorites. Generally I am not a big fan of ELR flashback episodes, and even though this particular flashback only lasts a few minutes, just the very sight of Ray Romano in a mullet wig and Brad Garrett in an afro reminds me of a bad acid trip back in the 1970's.  :P

So, it's not one of my favorites, but I'm quickly running out of videos to post and I'm desperate. And who knows? Maybe you will like it.

I love Brothers. It's one of my favorite episodes. And although the later seasons have many funny episodes, my favorites are from the earlier seasons (1-5). Ray was so much cuter in the earlier years. At least I think he was.  :D

One of my top three favorites is "No Fat" from season 3. Marie and Debra decide to make a tofu turkey for Thanksgiving. I loved Brad Garrett in this episode. The facial expressions he makes while he's trying to swallow the tofu turkey are hysterical!

"Debra Makes Something Good" from season 4, and "Marie's Meatballs" from season 2 round out my top three favorites!

Let me add that up for you David ... em .... 0 out of 10 ... not bad!

Tee-hee, I'm with you on this one, Susiebell!  ;)

I love Ray to bits, David, and the show's good, too. Alas, however, I don't know the answers to any of your questions.  :-\

Except, maybe, for question 6. Did they visit Italy?  ???

I'm still working on my thesis, so I can keep up with you!  ;)   :D

Hey! Thanks for looking at the ELR quiz you all!  :D

Marie, you weren't kidding me when you told me you were a Raymond fan!!

Okay, here are the answers....

1. Ray writes for New York Newsday. He is a sports writer for the paper.

2. Ray and Debra live on Fowler St. Their address is 320 Fowler St. They live in the town of Lynbrook in Long Island, New York.

3. Frank was an accountant.

4. The children's names are Ally, Michael and Geoffrey.

5. Robert's partner is Judy played by the talented Sherri Shepherd.

6. The Barones went to Italy in Season 5.

7. Ray is afraid of leprechauns. This was revealed in "Ray Home Alone" (Season 3 Episode 18).  Robert is afraid of monkeys in his bedroom closet.

8. Ray gave Frank and Marie a one year subscription to the "Fruit of the Month" club.

9. Debra made braciole. Her secret ingredient was currants.

10. Frank and Marie backed their car into the living room of Ray and Debra's house when the car brakes failed. Marie was driving the car.

Marie, it looks like you only missed one question! Congratulations!!!  :D

Maybe I'll post another quiz soon! Or someone else post a quiz if you want too! (But I think I'll have to make the next one MUCH harder for Marie! She's an ELR expert!!  ;)  :D )

Susie and Kerry, you both keep watching these ELR videos I'm posting and we'll have you caught up in no time!  :D

I never realized ELR was broadcast internationally until Melissa told me she was watching it over in Amsterdam. Then Kelda said she sometimes watched it in Scotland.  :D

Kerry, I hope they start broadcasting ELR again in Australia very soon!  :D

It sounds like they played "Good Girls" over there today Kelda! That's one of my favorites!

Debra: Just because you were a good girl in the 50's Marie, doesn't give you the right to...

Frank: Good Girl? HA!!

Everybody loves Raymond - and now I do, too  :).

ELR is not shown on German TV. I've only seen one episode one my flight back from the BBQ in May.
Today I watched all the videos David posted on this thread (except one, which wasn't playing). Took me quite a while, but I had a fun evening with those clips.
Now I voted, yes, I love Ray too  :).

Thanks for this thread and all the clips David  :-*
