This is a really good idea for a quiz, Susie!! It's gonna be a difficult one too. And I PROMISE I won't ask my British boyfriend for any of the answers! He's very good at things like this.

Okay.... here I go......

1. The Sandwich

British. I think it was named after the Earl of Sandwich.

2. The Modern Flush Toilet

His name was Thomas Crapper or something like that. I think he was British.

3. The Sewing Machine

British.

4. The lawn Mower

Probably American.

5. The Burglar Alarm

British.

6. The Telephone

I have a feeling this is a trick question. So, I'm going to guess it was a British person.

7. The Electric Light

American.

8. The Hearing Aid

British.

9. Tennis

I thought Tennis was a French game. France is closer to Britain than it is to the US, so it must be British.

10. The Disposable Diaper/Nappy

British.

11. The Coffee Pot

American.

12. The Vending Machine

Defninately British. They also invented the first ATM.

13. Roller Skates

American.

14. The Hovercraft

British.

15. Frozen Food

American.

16. The Stapler

American.

17. Oral Contraception

British.

18. The Aeroplane

I thought the airplane was invented in France. So, I think he was probably British.

19. The Postage Stamp

The postage stamp has been around for hundreds of years. British.

20. Carbon Dating

British.

Hi David honey!

I knew you'd be the first to have a go .... 10 out of 20 ... ... you got half of them right Yippeee!  Or you got half of them wrong Booooo!  Depends on whether you're a glass half full or glass half empty kind of a guy!!

Susie

I got 10 out of 20? Only 50%??

Over here in America that's called an F

Maybe I should have asked Alex after all!  :-\

1. The Sandwich The Brits win here. Though variations of the sandwich are probably very ancient and widespread (just think of the tamales and tortillas of the ancient Mesoamericans), the classic modern sandwich memorializes the Earl of Sandwich, who allegedly asked for a quick meal of meat between two slices of bread so as to not interrupt his game of billiards.

2. The Modern Flush Toilet  Gotta go with the Brits on this one. Weren't they called WC's, or water closets at one time in England?

3. The Sewing Machine  Methinks the Yanks get credit here. I think Singer was the inventor of the sewing machine, and that he was American.

4. The lawn Mower  Knowing modern Americans' obsessions with their lawns, I'm guessing American here.

5. The Burglar Alarm  British? (Guessing again).

6. The Telephone  American. Though I believe Alexander Graham Bell was born in what is now the Dominion of Canada (or did he hail from Scotland?), I believe he perfected this invention in the United States.

7. The Electric Light  Thomas A. Edison, an American, developed the electric light, ergo it is an American invention.

8. The Hearing Aid  I'm guessing American; and didn't Alexander Graham Bell have a hand in this?

9. Tennis  Tennis was being played in Britain long before a United States of America even existed.

10. The Disposable Diaper/Nappy  I'm guessing British.

11. The Coffee Pot  Knowing the love of the British for hot beverages (like tea), I'm going with the Brits on this one.

12. The Vending Machine  Vending machines seem so quintessentially American that I'm going with the Yanks here.

13. Roller Skates  Ditto.

14. The Hovercraft  Guessing American.

15. Frozen Food  British. Franklin's ill-fated voyage seeking the Northern Passage, in the 1840's, was state-of-the-art at the time for the storage of tinned food on board ship. Oops, that's tinned food, not frozen! Okay, I'm guessing British.

16. The Stapler  Guessing British.

17. Oral Contraception  Knowing Americans' prudery that still gets in the way of sexual sanity on these shores, I'm gonna go with the Brits on this one.

18. The Aeroplane  Well, the Wright brothers were American, were they not?

19. The Postage Stamp  British. The first stamp was issued in 1840, bearing the likeness of the young Queen Victoria.

20. Carbon Dating  I'm going to chalk this one up to the venerable Brits.

hear that it is all the Brits....
