Name That Tune! A Diversion Into Fun
« on: October 01, 2007, 06:51:23 pm »
OK, let's have some fun as I yank out music from my ridiculously large music library.  Most of these should be easy enough to guess when it comes to song title, but I suspect a lot of folks will have more trouble with the artists, so you get extra bonus points if you can pull that off.  At the very least, you get a touch of musical fun because you'll get to hear the whole song for the instrumental renditions, and the whole song after a correct guess for the vocal stuff.

Let's see how folks do!

An obscure hint: The song title is twice as nice.

I love Name that Tune!

This song reminds me of "The Continental".

It sounds very Latin, something Ricky Ricardo might play.

How about a (less obscure) hint, Phillip?

Uh. This sounds like the stuff they're dancing to at competition ballroom dancing. Latin (as opposed to Standard) I'd guess.
And that's how far I come with my guess ...

I am kind of surprised nobody has gotten it yet.  But I'll give one or two more clues.  It's a Brazilian song characterized as a samba that was wildly popular in the 40s and 50s and more than 70 artists/orchestras recorded it.  As to the artist, it wasn't Mantovani but the guess wasn't too far off.

I am not entirely certain, but I believe that is one of the versions of the song Tico Tico, originally known as Tico Tico no Farela and then later as Tico Tico no Fuba. It was written in 1917 by Zequinha de Abreu. There are currently 61 versions of this song as far as I know.

Yes, that's it.  Tico Tico made its first appearance in the States in a Disney cartoon short with Donald Duck, which was the usual dreck propaganda about the "happy people of Latin America."

The clue: "An obscure hint: The song title is twice as nice," referred to the fact the song was called "Tico Tico."

There are actually more than 100 versions of this song, but 61 of them were collected and published on WFMU's Blog, where you can download and listen to all of them if you like.

The English Lyrics are:

Oh tico-tico tick! Oh tico-tico tock! This tico-tico - he's the cuckoo in my clock. And when he says: "Cuckoo!" he means it's time to woo; It's "tico-time" for all the lovers in the block. I've got a heavy date - a tete-a-tete at eight, so speak, oh tico, tell me is it getting late? If I'm on time, "Cuckoo!" but if I'm late, "Woo-woo!" The one my heart has gone to may not want to wait!

For just a birdie, and a birdie who goes no-where, He knows of ev'ry Lovers' Lane and how to go there; For in affairs of the heart, my Tico's terribly smart, He tells me: "Gently, sentiment'ly at the start!"

Oh-oh, I hear my little tico-tico calling, Because the time is right and shades of night are falling. I love that not-so-cuckoo cuckoo in my clock: tico-tico tico-tico-tico tock!

This version was recorded by Percy Faith & His Orchestra.

Daniel got the first round, so let's have the second round now.  To give everyone a chance, the winner of the last round should avoid guessing in this  one, but gets back into the competion for the round after this.

This next one should be a lot easier, and perhaps so easy that I am only going to give you a few notes.  If nobody guesses, I'll throw in a few more.  This is a cover version.  I am looking for the name of the song and the artist that made it popular.

Bonus Hint: The artist formerly known as [] looks in one direction several times each day.

Tico Tico is a FABULOUS song!  Just the kind of song that Ricky would spin Lucy too fast around on the dance floor as her headdress falls wildly askew.  (In fact maybe that's where I know the song from?)

Phillip, this has potential to be hugely popular game.  I also love "Name That Tune."

Daniel, I really did  have that costume:  I went as Carmen Miranda to a Mardi Gras party a few years ago.  Whaddya know, there was another  Carmen Miranda at the same party.  I pulled the fruit off that bitch's head, you bet. :)

Ha ha ha, and did you have a wardrobe malfunction, Paul? Carmen Miranda was supposedly the first, years before Janet Jackson.

I don't recognize the tune.  It sounds very Lawrence Welk to me.  It's the harpsicord that makes me think of that.  Very "Dancing with the Stars."  Or maybe something they'd play on the Lido Deck.

I was thinking Lawrence Welk too  :) or a theme from some movie. I haven't looked down far enough to find out yet what it is. He comes on here on saturday nights and I have passed by it before while looking for channels. Now that is a corny show  ;D

Not too much, I took Swing Dance for my P.E. requirement in college (the semester before they removed it from the degree plan, of course), and got a little bit of it. One of the most popular songs for Swing (2-step) is Sing Sing Sing (Benny Goodman)

An amazing drum solo in this performance.

I'm surprised (again) nobody has gotten this one.  Mainewriter is in the right direction.  The tune was made popular by the Looney Tunes cartoon series and used in several of them, most notably with two very prim and proper gophers.

While we wait for an answer on yesterday's submission, here comes one for today that should also be on the easy side.  Try to guess without using one of those lyric searchers.  And I'm throwing in two extra bonus questions for this round.

1) Who is singing and name that tune.
2) Why would this artist probably never make it in today's "American Idol" world?
3) What one urban legend is this artist most associated with.

Paul gets this round.  It's amazing how little singing talent actually goes into the music business these days.

Since there will be likely no round tomorrow, here is a more complicated one to work on.  In this round, I am giving you the song title.  It's "Never Can Say Goodbye."  But there are seven different versions here.  Your job is to identify each one by artist.  Some are very easy dead giveaways, others may require some research with a music search engine to identify (and I could have made it even worse if I threw in even more)!

If you won the last round, you should abstain from this one, but then you're back in for the next unless folks stay stumped and I throw it open completely.

Another easy one for this afternoon.  Name the tune, the composer, and where this tune is most recognized.

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" width="335" height="28" id="divaudio2"><param name="movie" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/audio?myId=2196320-eaa" /><embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/audio?myId=2196320-eaa" width="335" height="28" name="divaudio2" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></object>

Raymond Scott's 1936 classic, "Powerhouse."

Most recognized (recently) as the theme song for Cartoon Network.

A variation on this tune can be heard during the opening credits of "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" (the Disney Movie).

My daughter, Hannah, gets total credit for this win...she knew the song instantly from "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" and the Cartoon Network. A little more research turned up Raymond Scott.

And thanks to my husband Tony who cooked and delayed dinner while we did this important research!

You got all but six and seven.  Six is going to be really hard, but it was commercially released.  Seven is going to be tricky too because it's a clever knockoff.  It's wide open to everyone to try and fill in the correct answers for six and seven.

Yep. Probably around the time Jack was just hitting his teens, the brilliance of Warner Brothers team of cartoonists were turning out the classic cartoons which stand the test of time perhaps better than any other.

Around the time Powerhouse was getting a real workout, Carl Stalling was doing a lot of musical direction and arrangements for the cartoons.  He especially loved to blend then-popular tunes with classical pieces into the soundtrack of the shorts.  Here is one good example.  In some six minutes, you'll hear at least one piece every minute mixed in, including Powerhouse.  This is the original soundtrack score.  Only some sound effects were inserted into this music bed.

How can one forget to wear underwear?  I've forgotten to put on my belt or my watch before I go out.  I've forgotten to put on shoes or a shirt when I go to answer the door.  But forgetting to put on underwear?  I don't get it.

Britney is so out of it she probably wouldn't know one way or the other. By the way, I like your Aunt Ester avatar  ;D

Perhaps I'll skip this one until I've got them plugged in!  ;)

Since nobody guessed #6 & #7 correctly:

#6 Percy Faith (again!)
#7 Hermes House Band (big in Britain - there's a Wikipedia article about them that tells their interesting story.)

Another round will begin shortly.

Back again, with another one that is going to be troublesome if you aren't familiar with the world music scene.  This artist is big in France and, no kidding, the song is in French as well.  Can you name the artist and the song?

And here is one more... the song itself is not a difficult guess... the vocalists are more so.  Can you identify the female and male vocalists?

This thread is resurrected!  Welcome back, Phillip.

Those are hard...

The French one reminds me of Princess Stephanie.  I had one of her LPs back in the '80s.  That song sounds sort of '80s.

"Dancin' in the Street"?  Not a clue.

Hey, I just found this thread!

These are both too tough for me though.  I mean other than knowing that the second song is "Dancing in the Street," aka "Dancin' in the  Street," aka "Dancing in the Streets," aka "Dancin' in the Streets."  I spent some time trying to cheat to figure out the vocalists and failed, but wound up watching Mick Jagger and David Bowie singing it down each other's throats, so that was interesting.
