I was so upset after reading the book, I could never bring myself to see the movie.

This is an excellent film, a work that has grown in importance to me over time. While deeply upsetting, it also reaffirms humanity's best impulses through the prism of art. Meryl Streep's performance is outstanding, one of her best.

The original novel also served as basis for a critically lauded 2002 opera (by the same title) composed by Nicholas Maw.

on the 'need to see' list

DeNiro got an Oscar for Best Actor.  Interestingly enough, Joe Pesci got a BAFTA for Most Outstanding Newcomer to Leading Film Role.

Based on the Broadway play
Starring:  Jack Lemmon, Robby Benson, Lee Remick and Colleen Dewhurst

A shallow Broadway press agent learns he is dying just as his cynical extranged son by his ex-wife arrives for a visit.  A lot smaltzie, a little forced and over the top at times.  Seems folks either loved it or hated it.

A classic in the Italian zombie genre, with lots of gore.

"X" is Xanadu

Despite the new "X" rule, I had to post this one.

From broadway.com:

"When it opened, Xanadu was panned by film critics and helped put the freeze on movie musicals in Hollywood for more than twenty years. The London Evening News called the film "the most dreadful, tasteless movie of the decade. Indeed, of all time." It went on to gross just $10 million and earn six 1981 Razzie Award nominations for Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Michael Beck), Worst Actress (Newton-John), Worst Screenplay and Worst Original Song, taking home Worst Director for Robert Greenwald. (Can't Stop the Music, the Village People movie, beat Xanadu for Worst Picture)..."

Michael Beck and Olivia Newton-John

BTW, a Broadway adaptation opened in June.  God help us.  God help Broadway.
