I think when I look back on my life from some point more distant that the point I am at now, the words "artless, charmed" and "happiness" will come to mind. It remains in my mind that way too, which I think is one of the beauties of the story. The timelessness of it.

The dozy embrace scene is one everyone can relate to, it is what we all want, to be held, to feel safe with another person. Add to that the beauty of nature of the long ago pathos of two young lovers long gone.

Man, I can't watch that without breaking up!
That has got to be one of the most beautiful scenes in all of cinema!
Actually I finally watched the movie again for the first time since December of 07. Thats was when I watched it with you Tru!
This time I watched it with my partner. It was still gut wrenching and i did cry through most of the movie.
Partly because it is so moving and partly because I knew the train wreck that was coming but was unable to turn away.
This time however was different. I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that even if I do wind up alone in trailer 17, I will be suffused in the knowledge that I had the courage to finally live the life I was meant to live. That I allowed myself to love and be loved. That, I think ,is the meaning behind the story. We have but one life. We can live it to the fullest taking chances and livng outloud or we can live it all folded up in a small box we put ourselves in. One way it ends fully realized and regret free the other way  winds up filled with bitterness and regret never being fully realized.
I'm glad I changed the way I was going!
Thank you Ennis for showing me the way! Thank you my friends for helping me along!

Well said. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

In honor of the 12th anniversary of the publication of the short story, here is one of my favorite tribute videos:

The experience of Eternity in a moment. This one scene evokes the feeling I had upon 1st viewing the movie. Sad, but grateful for the experience, and happy it's part of my life.

Dang truman! You have a way.
One of the greatest beauties of this story is it brought me you!

Sure is!  I've had people ask me how at 40 I can still be hopeful about love?  I tell them it's because I know my dozy embrace is still out there waiting for me.

Tell him when l come up to him and ask to play the record, l'm gonna say: ''Voulez-vous jouer ce disque?''
'Voulez-vous, will you kiss my dick?'
Will you play my record? One-track mind!
