Truman got what I was going for.
When you open the door to your heart you open it to everything. Love pain and the whole crazy thing! LOL

I did, too, bud. It was Scott's comment I didn't get.
"It is required of every man that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellow-men, and travel far and wide."--Charles Dickens.

He disagreed with my statement that our ability to love is what eventually saves and protects us.  If we didn't have that ability, we would never survive.  That's all I was saying.

It is the ability, then, to open yourself up to love and be vunerable that saves us, because otherwize we would be dead. I take it that is the consensus.

Exactly.  It's what makes us real, and alive, and worth loving back.  Loving unconditionally and without reservation is the only real way to love.

But one finds oneself in the most ridiculous emotional  sitautions, allowing oneself to love unconditionally. Sometimes it's nonsense! non-sense.

Give me the arrow, you take the bow
--to me it's ernest, to you it's jest-
I have pulled the bowstring taut
You aim, so it his the heart.
                  (Clemens Brentano).

NONSENSE....

But those are situations.  We react to situations and those reactions are what cause us pain.  If we truly love someone, we do so without thought of what we will recieve in return.  Unfortunately for most of us, that is how we love, but as you so eloguently pointed out...the love poetry biz would suffer greatly if we learned how to love correctly.

For me that has happened when I try to think with my heart instead of my head. When I love someone because I am needing something from them, which I inevitible realize I can only give myself.
