Katherine inspired me (remember - imitation is the highest form of flattery).  :)

I love how Ennis watches Jack ride off after he says, "We'd better git unless you wanna sit around tyin' knots all day."

I love that first little smile Ennis bestows on us in response to Jack's rodeo clowning around.  It's like a flower opening

Barb, I'm so glad you started this!

I love the "happy tussle." After the various tensions of the tent scenes (and mind you, I'm not complaining about those!), this scene shows how relaxed and comfortable they have become about being affectionate with each other -- particularly Ennis, who uncharacteristically initiates it!

But I also love the "angry tussle." So much misdirected emotion by Ennis and, eventually, nurturing by Jack. And when they roll down the hill, you can tell how much they'd secretly rather be lovin' than fightin'.

(Sorry to post right after myself, but we're limited to one thought per post and I wanted to contrast the two tussles.)

I love the 'You'll run them sheep off again, if you don't quiet down' And the smile Ennis gives after that! He's sooo happy and relaxed, at peace with himself and his life with Jack!

Good one, belbbmfan, and welcome!

I love the way Jack *so* carefully and deliberately asks Ennis "Your brother and sister do right by you?"  It's acheingly beautiful (borrowing from Wolfie again) how much he obviously cares about Ennis and also understands him enough to know that he needs to tread very carefully, here.

thanks, ednbarby. Thought I'd stop 'lurking' and start posting!  :)

I love Jack's expression as he listens to Ennis telling him about his brother and sister. The joy on his face that Ennis is opening up to him! Oh, and that little smile he gives just before he says 'Friend, that's more words than you've spoke in two weeks.' Like he can't believe his luck...
And at the same time, what a sad story Ennis is telling. How lonely he has been...

I love the way Ennis backs up to look at the tent and then says, "Tent don't look right."  This is actually mirrored at the end of the movie when he backs up to look at his mailbox after just affixing number stickers to it.

Hey, belbbmfan, let me second the welcome!

And I wondered today if "tent don't look right" has a subtext. Like, tent don't look right because you and I aren't in it together!  ;) Course, he wouldn't say that. So maybe more like, tent don't look right ... because its purpose and significance is about to change.

I love the part where, right after Ennis says he ain't had the opportunity to sin (which of course I also love), Jack goes, "Hmmmm!" like, "That's intriguing!" I always laugh at this line, because it reminds me of that post in the old cowboy etiquette thread: "If your camping partner tells you he has never had the opportunity to sin, then you are obliged to present the opportunity."

I love Jack's face as he's riding back to camp at dawn after his first night out with the sheep - how it's ruddy with the cold, but calm and accepting of the cold, too.  Makes me actually feel the bite of it in the air (and want to put my warm cheek against his cold one to warm him up a bit  ;)).

I love that after the second tent scene, Ennis is actually contemplating spending another summer on brokeback. When they're 'entanglin' them chilean sheep outa ours' Jack is so mad he says F*ck Aguirre and Ennis answers:'what if we need to work for him again?'
Of course by the time they come down form the mountain, reality has kicked in.

I love the way Ennis sings softly to himself when he's riding towards the point at which he's going to "come up on a bear" and how it's the same way (same song, even?) he's singing softly to Jack in the dozy embrace flashback.  Makes me think he's thinking about Jack the first time he's singing it, too.

I love the way Jack looks down from his mountain camp with the sheep and sees Ennis as a spot of fireglow.  So much stuff going on in that heart and mind.

Mmmmm.  That's some shot, isn't it?  The first time I saw it, I thought it couldn't be real.  And the scenary was nice, too.  ;)

I love the way Ennis spends the day with Jack and the sheep the next day after their "Hell, that's the most I've spoke in a year" and "The hell they are" conversation - the day after story Ennis felt he could paw the white out of the moon, he'd had such a good time.

I love Jack taking off his own bandanna and using that to start cleaning Ennis's head wound. Such an intimate gesture, the first caress?

I love everything about that summer, only thing I don't like is that it ended.

I love that few months out of their lives brought them together and shaped their destiny like that.  I love that summer because Ennis got what was possibly his first glimpse into loving and falling in love.  :)

I love Ennis in the stream washing the breakfast dishes, looking up and seeing the tiny spot that is Jack up on the mountain. Such a touching indication of his expanding heart for Jack.

I love the way Ennis sits wringing his hands in front of the fire as he gathers the courage to go into the tent with Jack.

I love Jack when he's good-naturedly bitching, and he does a lot of that that first summer.

"You know, I'm commutin' four hours a day."

"Aguirre got no right makin' us do somethin' against rules."

"Let it be.  It ain't going nowhere."

"I'm up with the sheep all day, I get back here hungry as hell and all I find is beans."

I love the first glimpse we have of the boys having put the sheep out to pasture, and Ennis calmly surveys the scene to glance back at Jack tending to one of the sheep. Ennis seems so at home here, filled with quiet pride and purpose, and you sense the respect and interest he is already developing for Jack.

I love the pretend-pissed off look on Jack's face when he says "Where in the hell have you been, been up with the sheep all day.... yadiyadiya...".

I love that first shot of the sheep coming over the crest of the hill to the strains of the "Brokeback Mountain 1" portion of the score.  Something about the sunlight in that shot, and the calm, plodding way the sheep move always gives me a warm feeling in my chest.

I USED to love it when Ennis punches Jack out..I'd laugh out loud every time. Then (after 27 screen vierwings), Sid explained it to me: The reason Jack is so cheerful when he tells Ennis about Aguirre coming back and telling Jack to bring the sheep down because of the coming storm, and Ennis is so mad--is: Jack has no idea that this is THE END. Ennis has mentioned Alma like ONCE all sumer...he figures...probably nothing definite, but that this relastionship is NOT about to come to a screeching halt. Ennis realizes this, so the next time Jack starts talking softly to him, comforting him (because of the nosebleed)--he hauls ioff and socks him...to let him know.

Sniff..

I love the way Ennis tries to please Jack:

He is so willing to switch jobs to make Jack happy.
He asks for soup, because Jack is sick of beans, even though he doesn't like soup and loves beans.
He puts up Jack's tent and tries his hardest to sort it out when it "don't look right", even though he
(Ennis) isn't going to be sleeping in it anymore. (well, as far as they know he isn't)

I saw you were sick and tired of my wrong turns.
If you only knew the way I feel,
I'd really love to tell you,
But I could never seem to say
The things I needed to.
On a day like today
No other words would do.

What does David Trimble say to Ennis just before he tells him never to order soup?   I couldn't quite hear it with all the bleating sheep noise.

I love watching the first 25 minutes of the film over and over again.
