Why is Memphis called "Bluff City" as a nickname?

I didn't know it was, but it is on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River.

Thanks Elle.  There's a bonus round in the U.S.A. challenge that's all about city nicknames and "Bluff City" is a clue that I've learned (through practice) refers to Memphis.
