The playlist on Heath's funeral unraveled...
« on: February 11, 2008, 03:41:07 pm »
This was apparently the 'play list' of Heath's funeral...

What an amazing list of songs...

"These Days" - Powderfinger
"Wish You Were Here" - Pink Floyd
"Superstition" - Stevie Wonder
"Times Are A-Changin'" - Bob Dylan
"Seven Nation Army" - White Stripes
"The Past and Pending" - The Shins
"Here Comes the Sun" - The Beatles
"Happy Ever After" - Ben Harper
"1979" - Smashing Pumpkins
"Old Man" - Neil Young
"Come Together" - The Beatles

Old Man just happens to be one of my all-time favourite songs. I also heard it in "Lords of Dogtown" and it makes me smile. It probably also has a meaning because of Heath's Old Man River tattoo.

Come Together - The Beatles:
"Got to be a joker he just do what he please."

Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles:
Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Wish you were here - Pink Floyd:
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

These Days - Powder Finger:

This life well it's slipping right through my hands
These days turned out nothing like I had planned

Do you have any special memories associated with any of these songs?

Some of the songs I am either unfamilar with or did not know that was their name, but the ones I do:

"Wish You Were Here" takes me back to college days, vinyl and controlled substances.

"Superstition" I have always loved, and their is a version by the late Stevie Ray Vaughn I am particularily fond of. In the video Stevie Wonder appears at the end with a black cat, he strokes it and says: "Here kitty, kitty"

Times they are A-changin': I adopted that song as a personal anthem back 20 years ago, and the times did change, and now I am in the target group I was aiming those words at, but it is cool. Things are changin' and for the better in large part. Right now anyway.

The Past and Pending: I have no idea about but remember Jake had them on Saturday Night Live as his musical guest. I guess the host picks them.

Old Man: I can remember being 24 and singing that song and feeling like I was just the shit. Turns out I was....

ComeTogether: So cool, because that is what they were doing, what we were doing , coming together, over Heath.

I guess it would depend on who picked out the music.  It may not necessarily be Heath's fav tunes, but someone else's who associated them with Heath or want to associate them with Heath.

That doesn't take away that it's an amazing list of songs.  :D

I do think it was Heath's choice. He was very much into music and must've talked about it a lot with friends and family. I would know exactly what to play for one of my family members or even friends (please don't let that happen for a LONG, LONG time...  :'()

I was at the Neil Young concert last night in Antwerp, Belgium.

I saw the playlist of the first concert in Antwerp on Monday and no Old Man...Well, I guess it would have been too much of a coincidence if he did play that song, just on the night we were having this moment of silence.

So I wasn't expecting it yesterday but then suddenly there it was....just him, his guitar and harmonica. I was fighting back the tears. I'm sure Heath did this!

It was a very special moment during an absolutely fantastic concert!

Oh my God, that's amazing! So he actually sang it when it wasn't on the play list? God, that's beautiful.

I love that song to death, have always loved it, and to now have it linked with Heath makes it even more amazing and sad at the same time. I think it's a song that I most associate with Heath's character in Monster's Ball.

Mel, what a great idea for a thread!!!!!

"These Days" by the Aussie band Powderfinger

It's coming round again
The slowly creeping hand
Of time and its command
Soon enough it comes
and settles in its place
Its shadow in my face
Puts pressure in my day

This life well it's slipping right through my hands
These days turned out nothing like I had planned

It's coming round again
The slowly creeping hand
Of time and its demands
It settles in its place
Its shadow in my face
Undignified and lame

This life well it's slipping right through my hands
These days turned out nothing like I had planned
Control well it's slipping right through my hands
These days turned out nothing like I had planned

Soon enough it comes
Soon enough it comes
To tie us down

I recently came across this and thought maybe people here might find it interesting:

http://www.didgeridoobreath.com/index.php?page=news&id=66

In memory of a great Australian - Heath Ledger

Hi there didge people,

Levi here from Didgeridoo Breath. On Saturday the 9th of February 2008 I had the honour of playing the didgeridoo for the opening of Heath Ledgers Memorial Service.

I rode to Penrhos College in Como on my motorbike with my didgeridoo secured to my back inside a didge bag. When I arrived there was a small group of media representatives armed with their cameras ready to take shots of anyone that looked like they had the slightest thing to do with the service. On any other day it would have been exciting to be standing in front of the media and posing for photos but this day it just didn’t feel 100% right, so I quickly strolled by through the gate then inside to prepare to play.

With my traditional dress (laplap and body paint) I made my way on to the stage which was set up with rings of Frangipanis, a variety of different sized candles placed all over the stage, a beautiful array of flowers and the sweet scent of incense.  After  a few songs were played through the speakers the time finally came for me to play.

So eyes closed and mouth to didge I began to play….the picture that came to my mind while I played was the sun going down for the very last time ever….I pictured myself as a bird flying as fast as I could to keep up with the disappearing sun…chasing it over mountains, along the rivers, forests and bush land…no matter how fast I flew my small wings soon became very tired and I could not fly any more….as I rested on a high rock the sun seemed to get further and further away until it disappeared in the distance and I was left in total darkness!!

Myself as the bird began to cry out in fear and in loss knowing I’d never wake to sing the song for the sun again…there I sat alone and shivering for the sun had forever gone leaving the world totally dark and cold…..until my mind started to remember how the sun used to sneak its way under my eyelids and wake me up…..and all the days that I had spent in the light of the sun…flying, singing, waking all the other creatures up with my morning song…then a warmth flooded over me and joy and happiness then filled  my heart as these memories began to fill and overflow my little bird mind, I just couldn’t hold in this feeling, a smile started to stretch across my face, a giggle bubbled up then suddenly a kookaburra laugh burst out . Then right at that moment I knew no matter how cold or dark the world around became, I would always smile knowing that I once spent a day in the sun…Then my didge playing stopped.

Although I never met Heath or had the chance to know him, by the atmosphere that was set at the service, I’d imagine he was a really nice, down to earth everyday guy who was greatly loved. Personally he had to be one of my favourite actors. From the movie “Two Hands” to “The Patriot” he was just brilliant!!

I recently found out from his father Kim that Heath enjoyed playing the didgeridoo (How cool is that?)      I felt even more privileged. Sometimes we put celebrities on such a pedestal that we tend to forget that behind all the glitz, glamour and hype from the media they too are still human and enjoy the odd hobby on the side.

All my love and prayers to his family. God Bless. Levi

The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army

I'm gonna fight 'em all
A nation army couldn't hold me back
They're gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back

And I'm talking to myself at night
Because I can't forget
Back and forth through my mind
Behind a cigarette
And the message coming from my eyes
Says leave it alone

Don't want to hear about it
Every single one's got a story to tell
Everyone knows about it
From the Queen of England to the hounds of hell

And if I catch it coming back my way
I'm gonna serve it to you
And that aint what you want to hear
But thats what I'll do
And the feeling coming from my bones
Says find a home

I'm going to Wichita
Far from this opera for evermore
I'm gonna work the straw
Make the sweat drip out of every pore
And I'm bleeding, and I'm bleeding, and I'm bleeding
Right before the lord
All the words are gonna bleed from me
And I will sing no more
And the stains coming from my blood
Tell me go back home
"Tu doives entendre je t'aime."
(and you know who I am...)

Smashing Pumpkins - 1979

Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet
Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure wed never see an end to it all
And I dont even care to shake these zipper blues
And we dont know
Just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
Double cross the vacant and the bored
Theyre not sure just what we have in the store
Morphine city slippin dues down to see
That we dont even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought wed go, beneath the sound of hope
Justine never knew the rules,
Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls
No apologies ever need be made, I know you better than you fake it
To see that we dont care to shake these zipper blues
And we dont know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
The street heats the urgency of sound
As you can see theres no one around
"Tu doives entendre je t'aime."
(and you know who I am...)

The Shins - Past and Pending

As someone sets light to the first fire of autumn
We settle down to cut ourselves apart.
Cough and twitch from the news on your face
And some foreign candle burning in your eyes

Held to the past too aware of the pending
Chill as the dawn breaks and finds us up for sale.
Enter the fog another low road descending
Away from the cold lust, you house and summertime.

Blind to the last cursed affair pistols and countless eyes
A trail of white blood betrays the reckless route your craft is running
Feed till the sun turns into wood dousing an ancient torch
Loiter the whole day through and lose yourself in lines dissecting love.

Your name on my cast and my notes on your stay
Offer me little but doting on a crime.
We've turned every stone and for all our inventions
In matters of love loss, we've no recourse at all.

Blind to the last cursed affair pistols and countless eyes
A trail of white blood betrays the reckless route your craft is running
Feed till the sun turns into wood dousing an ancient torch
Loiter the whole day through and lose yourself in lines dissecting love.

Ben Harper - Happy Ever After In Your Eyes

The morning sunrise spread her wings
While the moon hung in the sky
You held the sea in your hands
And happy ever after in your eyes
Happy ever after is in your eyes

Couldn’t leave you to go to heaven
I carry you in my smile
For the first time my true reflection I see
Happy ever after in your eyes
Happy ever after is in your eyes

Every star in the night
Promises the dawn
I will be there if you fall
‘Til heaven ‘til heaven you rest upon

All that I can give you
Is forever yours to keep
Wake up everyday with a dream
And happy ever after in your eyes
Happy ever after is in your eyes

I love this thread, and I love the didge player's story.  Thanks for the discovery and the posting, Bruce.  Did you notice, he didn't say "and then I stopped playing my didge," but rather, "then my didge playing stopped."  He, like the didge, is the instrument.

The Times They Are A Changin' -- Bob Dylan

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

Neil Young - "Old Man"

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there's so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don't get lost.
Like a coin that won't get tossed
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.

I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I'm all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

The Beatles - "Here Comes the Sun"

Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it's all right

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it's all right
It's all right

Yes, indeed, I found it outstanding, John. Especially at the beginning where the young man in the brown coat is taking pictures of a lone house that looks a little like the one at Lightning Flat. Who was that older man in the car, d'you think? Methinks it was his father. All duded up in a fancy shirt to go across the bridge.

And fabienne--outstanding photo and review of Neil Young!! I also listened to his "Emperor of Wyoming" recently. That's Ennis, to me, and Heath.

I'm downloading that as we speak! Thanks for recommending it...

Anybody else have specific memories of the songs on the playlist of Heath's memorial?

Thanks so much for posting these songs. I want to make a CD of them in remembrance of Heath. I am familiar with the songs except for "These Days" by Powderfinger. I do know that I have read that Heath was a big fan of the Beatles. I also read he was a big fan of Ben Harper who he knew. I believe the other songs fit very well into how I have read Heath was, how he lived, and how he saw the world. I think he was a very intense person as well as a very peaceful person. I have also read that his family (I believe it was his family) said that he was an old soul in a young man's body. That reminds me of the song "Old Man."

I have felt this before and I think it may sound strange to some people so I have just thought maybe it was my imagination. It might be or it may be that I find them to both be admirable people who left us way too young. I see some pictures of Heath particularly the ones where he has those round glasses on and he reminds me of John Lennon. I do think it is possible that both of them did view the world in similar ways, both lived life in similar ways, and both were very peaceful people who did not really seek the type of fame and fortune they found. I may be totally off base, but when I read that Heath's favorite group was the Beatles it made me think even more.

They were both unconcerned with how speaking what they believed would affect their careers.
They were both especially loving daddies.  (Well, John was with his second child.)
They both eschewed playing it safe in their art forms by sticking with formulas that had worked, but instead kept exploring new directions. (Well, John did in early and mid-career.)

This was apparently the 'play list' of Heath's funeral...

What an amazing list of songs...

"These Days" - Powderfinger
"Wish You Were Here" - Pink Floyd
"Superstition" - Stevie Wonder
"Times Are A-Changin'" - Bob Dylan
"Seven Nation Army" - White Stripes
"The Past and Pending" - The Shins
"Here Comes the Sun" - The Beatles
"Happy Ever After" - Ben Harper
"1979" - Smashing Pumpkins
"Old Man" - Neil Young
"Come Together" - The Beatles

Old Man just happens to be one of my all-time favourite songs. I also heard it in "Lords of Dogtown" and it makes me smile. It probably also has a meaning because of Heath's Old Man River tattoo.

Come Together - The Beatles:
"Got to be a joker he just do what he please."

Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles:
Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Wish you were here - Pink Floyd:
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

These Days - Powder Finger:

This life well it's slipping right through my hands
These days turned out nothing like I had planned

Do you have any special memories associated with any of these songs?

Certainly do, as music has always been there for me in good and bad times.
I can remember sitting doing my homework to "wish you were here" The first vinyl I ever bought was Pink Floyd, and used to save my pocket money till I had collected all they had ever recorded.
I rmember sobbing to the bob dylan track, over and over again after a painful breakup.

The beatles, come together got me right from the first hypnotic beat.I much preferred their later work to the more "pop" earlier stuff. Here comes the sun always reminds me of John Lennon, another who died too young.

Neil young I loved but preferred other tracks, like the needle and the damage done.At the time I was concerned about my brother who was dabbling in controlled substances.
The white stripes I only saw for the first time at the live 8 concert and was immediately hooked.I love it when I discover new groups and music.

Happy ever after I only became aware of when I discovered Heath's fascination with the musician. So now that just makes me cry.

I read (alluding to another post) that Heath actually played the didgeridoo(sorry if  incorrect spelling) on an interview, and than got the interviewer to try and play it as well.
I have wracked my brains to remember which interview it was,but to no avail. So the playing of it at his funeral seems very apt.
I hope someone knows me well enough tp play the songs that mean much to me at my funeral.

I Thnk just maybe my older son might know.Inspite of his many problems we have a common bond at least with music.

Me too, me too  :)  Floyd was my favorite for a lot of years, and at one point I owned every record.  "Wish You Were Here" was one of my favorite Floyd songs.

"Needle and the Damage Done" is my favorite Neil Young track as well.  Hopefully your brother has gotten past that okay.

Here is the link to a post on this site with the Heath didgeridoo info:

Thanks for the link,it reallywas driving me nuts,Yes thang god my brother is noe the cleanest living person I know.He moved to Japan when he was in early twenties and they simply take NO prisoners with drugs.
He thrn tried alcohol but 5 years ago gave that up along with smoking.
He now lives between tokyo and the mountains for half the year, and in I ndia with his wife nd child for the other half.too complicated to explain. He is really a bit of a loner.
.It was a constant worry for me as I was stupidly(in hindsight) protecting my paarents who thought he wa gods gift.Fortunately now it has rurned full circle and he helps me with my many emotional problems and as mentioned in y blog bipolar son
Thanks again,
yuo're a sweetie for your concern
Is this site just not filled with good souls.
I love it

"1979" - Smashing Pumpkins

Heath's date of birth was 4 April, 1979.
Wow!
First off, I love that song!
Second 1979 was my first year as a teenager! Very important to me!
Third, on April 4th of this year I will be attending my Second Gay Rodeo. Had it not been for Heaths portrayal of Ennis I would not have gone to my first one much less my second one.
I owe all these amazing changes in my life to him. I hate to sound like some star struck stalker freak but it's true.
Watching Brokeback almost a year ago (4/10/07) changed my life. I saw in Ennis who I was and who I was destined to become if I didn't change. I don't think anyone else could have portrayed that role in a way that would have hit me so hard.
So again I say "Thank you Ennis/Heath for showing me the way".

Chiming in late to say that "Wish You Were Here" and "Old Man" are two of my top three favorite songs.

I always loved the melancholy, bittersweet sound of both of them.  They've both come to take on deeper meanings as the years have gone by.

"Wish You Were Here" was the last song my Mom and I listened to together, holding hands, like we did many times when I was a teenager and we would sit listening in rapture to Billy Joel's "The Stranger" and "52nd Street" albums.  "Vienna" was our most favorite, followed closely by "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant."  It was Christmas Eve, 1992, when we sat holding hands listening to "Wish You Were Here."  After it was over, I told her how the wind at the end reminded me of my childhood - but not of the bad parts of which she was well aware - of the parts when I would lie awake at night listening to the winter wind howling outside my window and feel safe.  When she died, it became her eulogy.

Then, when Brokeback Mountain broke me in two, it became a eulogy to Jack - the wind clearly was him calling to Ennis.

Now it has taken on its deepest meaning yet.

And "Old Man" - that one I've always just loved on every level because it is just a beautiful, beautiful song, both lyrically and melodically.  And now, it speaks volumes.

I'm a lot like you were...

I'll love you and miss you always, Heath.

And then there's "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond" (which I'm now listening to, as it immediately follows "Wish You Were Here" on the album of that same name).  Again, a song that will forever be about Heath to me.

Shine On, You Crazy Diamond

No one knows where you are, how near or how far.
Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Remember when you were young - you shone like the sun.
Shine on, you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on, you crazy diamond.

You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
Blown on the steel breeze.
Come on, you target for faraway laughter,
Come on, you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on, you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Well, you wore out your welcome with random precision,
Rode on the steel breeze.
Come on, you raver, you seer of visions,
Come on, you painter, you piper, you prisoner,
And shine.

No more beans!

Susie, that line in Time always gets to me, too.  Especially "Racing around to come up behind you again."  What poetry.

My husband has long dreamed of writing a screenplay about his experiences in pilot training (for the Air Force) and having that song be the backdrop for the opening scene.  In fact, his telling me that was one of the things that made me fall in love with him - that and that the lines "When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse out of the corner of my eye.  I turned to look, but it was gone - I cannot put my finger on it now, the child is grown, the dream is gone" always made him think of a particular moment in his childhood when he did in fact catch a fleeting glimpse - it was as if all of his life's possibilities flashed by him at supersonic speed.  I had had the very same experience, and to hear him say he did, too, told me that we had to be together.

The one time I saw Pink Floyd in concert - in 1994 at Joe Robbie Stadium (when they still called it that) - when they played "Wish You Were Here," every person in the audience sang every word, seemingly in perfect unison, pitch, and rhythm.  It was the most amazing concert experience of my life.  David Gilmore is absolutely one of my heroes.

The Hollywood Sportatorium!  It was before my time down here, but I hear stories of it often.  :)

I see the Sound Advice Amphitheater has recently become the Cruisin' Amphitheater.  It was the Mars Amphitheater before Sound Advice, and something else again before that - all since I've been here (since 1993).

And the Bank Atlantic Center was once the National Car Rental Center (or NCRC), and before that, it was the Panthers Center, or something like that.

And then there's Joe Robbie Stadium...  Oh, screw it.  (Damn corporations.)

You're in excellent company.  My son is a South Florida native, too.  :)

Where are you now, again?
