With the success of "Lucky Star", Madonna's debut album (Madonna) went on to sell 3 million copies, and hit the Top 10 on the album chart.

As the single "Lucky Star" started to drop down the chart, Madonna released her follow up album, titled "Like A Virgin".

The lead off single was the title track.  The song "Like A Virgin" went on to spend 6 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 Singles chart.  The album of the same name spent 3 weeks at #1, and sold 10 million copies in the US.  Images of Madonna and her "Boy Toy" belt buckle were all over TV and in magazines.

Three more singles went on to become Top 10 hits from the "Virgin" album.  "Material Girl", "Angel" and "Dress You Up".

At this time, Madonna started her first tour, called "The Virgin Tour" and her performance of "Dress You Up" became the video for the single.

After her successful "Virgin Tour", Madonna went back into the studio to record her 3rd CD, "True Blue".

It revealed a "new" Madonna, lighter hair, slimmer, and she lost the bows, belt buckle, and jewelery.

The first look at this Madonna was the CDs lead off single, "Live To Tell".

5 singles were released, and all of them hit the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100, three of them getting to the #1 position.  The album went on to hit #1 on the Top 200 Album charts, and sold 7 million copies in the US.

The most controversial video from the album was the second single, "Papa Don't Preach", which was about pregnant teenaged girl, telling her father she wanted to keep her baby.

1987 saw the release of the Madonna film "Who's That Girl?".  The movie was a flop.  However, the soundtrack was a hit.

The soundtrack was not a full length Madonna CD, however, it did include 4 new Madonna songs.  The title song "Who's That Girl" got to #1 on the Hot 100, and the follow up, "Causing A Commotion" got to #2.  The soundtrack sold 2 million copies, and also helped launch the "Who's That Girl" wolrd tour, which was a huge success.

The video for "Causin' A Commotion" was filmed at her Italian stop of the Who's That Girl" Tour.

After 3 successful albums, and a hit soundtrack, it was time for new product.

However, Madonna was out on tour, and not in the studio making new music.  What to do?  Release a compilation.

Released in late 1987, "You Can Dance" was a remix album....featuring newer remixes of classic Madonna hits, mostly from her first album.  However, the album included "Into The Groove", which was available before only on the "Desperately Seeking Susan" soundtrack, and an older song that was never included on any Madonna album, "Spotlight".

Although not officially released as a single, "Spotlight" got major airplay on radio stations, and pushed "You Can Dance" up into the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200.

After her "Who's That Girl" tour, Madonna went back into the studio to record music that was very reflective on what she was going through.  She was divorcing Sean Penn, and it was coming out in her music.

1989 saw the release of her album, "Like a Prayer".

The first single from the album was the title track, and it was surrounded by controversy.  Including religous imagery (including Madonna kissing a statue of a  black saint come to life, showing the stigmata, and burning crosses) the video was a big attention getter, and became Madonna's next #1 single.  The album went on to hit #1 as well.

Express Yourself, Keep It Together, Cherrish, and Oh Father all became hit singles, the first three getting into the Top 10, and "Oh Father" getting to the top 20.

1990 saw Madonna in the theaters and on the charts with "Dick Tracy".  She played the character Breathless Mahoney and named her next CD "I'm Breathless".  Along the bottom of the CD it says "Music From and Inspired By the Moive 'Dick Tracy".

The CD got to #2 on the Billboard Top 200, and two singles were released.  "Hanky Panky" got to #10, and "Vogue" to #1 on the Hot 100 chart.  Trivia note, Madonna was not fond of the song "Vogue" and planned it as a B-side of another song.  Her record company convinced her otherwise.

At the end of 1990, Madonna released her first greatest hits collection, titled "The Immaculate Collection".

It contained 15 greatest hits, as well as two new tracks.  One of the hit singles (Crazy For You) had not ever appeared on a Madonna CD, as it was on the soundtrack to the movie "VisionQuest".

The two new songs were "Justify My Love" and "Rescue Me".   Both spoken words with music, the singles were released not long after the CD.  Justify My Love had a very (for the time) racy and explict video that was banned by MTV, only airing late at night.

The Immaculate Collection got to #2 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart.  "Justify My Love" got to #1 on the Hot 100, and "Rescue Me" got to #10.

I was unable to find a version of the official music video that I can embed here.  There is one on YouTube that won't embed, and here's the link.  Just remember that it contains "mature" themes and would not be considered work safe.

In 1992 Madonna released her next CD.  After the video "Justify My Love", she decided to delve more into sexual exploration and released the coffee table book "Sex".  She went on tour "Girlie Show" and released the CD "Erotica".

Many felt that the explict songs and videos were now overshadowing Madonna's talent.  Once again, Madonna's video (this time Erotica) was banned from MTV, only getting late night airings.

Erotica (the CD) got to #2 on the Billboard Top 200 charts.  Three songs were released as singles.  "Erotica" got to #3, "Deeper & Deeper" got to # 7 and "Rain" got to #14 on the Hot 100 chart.

*please note - i've embeded the official video for "Erotica" here.  It is not safe for work.*

After the success (and backlash) of "Erotica", Madonna elected to release a CD that showcased a bit of a softer side.

Her next CD, "Bedtime Stories" used blues samples and scored two big hits.  The CD got to #3 on the Billboard Top 200.  The first single, "Secret" hit #7, and "Take A Bow" got Madonna back to #1.

Perhaps still feeling a bit of backlash from her "Erotica" opus, Madonna continued to work on softening her image.  She decided to release a second greatest hits cd, but with a different angle this time.

In 1995, Madonna released a collection called "Something To Rembember".  This CD contained no dance hits.  It was a collection of all of Madonna's ballads/love songs.  This collection had new songs, as well as 2 previously released hits from movies, "I'll Remember" from 'With Honors', and "This Used To Be My Playground" from 'A League Of Their Own'.   The new single was "You'll See", and the video was done as a sequal to "Take A Bow".

"Something To Remember" got to #6 on the Billboard Topp 200.  The new single "You'll See" got to #6 on the Top 100.  Previously released track "Playground" got to #1 when previously released, and "I'll Remember" got to #2 when previously released.
