(aside from Brokeback Mountain)

I was in the mood for a good cry the other day and rented Out of Africa... what are some other favorite tear jerkers?

Another one for me is Terms of Endearment.

'where the day takes you' is a good one. it's older, but it's about a bunch of homeless kids.
'american history x'....that's a shocker, and gross, but very sad too.
'missisippi burning'....again, shocking and sad
'a time to kill'
'amistad'.....very very sad.
'the good girl' ....that makes me sad
'girl interrupted'

i'm sure i'll think of more.

Hmmmm... I see a pattern emerging. I guess I don't like the way Americans do tragedy so much. I always find American tragedies over-the-top and manipulative.

You may think this is daft, but only two movies have ever made me cry. One was when I was a kid and I saw "The Incredible Journey" about 2 dogs and a cat. This was based on a true story. (The modern day version is Homeward Bound which isn,t anywhere near as good) and Watership Down.
BBM didn,t make me cry atall.

The Incredible Journey is one of my all time favorites!!!! The very old version, that is narrated.

Not the one with the voice overs from Michael J. Fox, Sally Field, and Don Amici (that version is good enough, but it doesn't have the same nostalgia for me as the older one).

Another one I cried buckets over recently was The Notebook.

Barb - I think you are onto something about American tragic movies tending toward the manipulative. I always cry during STEPMOM and it p*sses me off.

The only film I have cried over apart from BBM was when I was about 10/11 and my parents took me to see" ring of bright water", based on a true story about a man and his friendship with an ottter. It is filmed in Scotland on the coast so the scenery is stunning,and just so sad.I then had a wait of nearly 40 years before I ever cried at a movie again.

I'm sure there are others so I will list them later, but what comes to mind immediately is my second favorite movie of all time behind Brokeback and that is Titanic. I know there are several versions of Titanic, but the one I am speaking of is the one releases in 1997 with Kate Winselt and Leonardo DiCaprio. And of course the song from it is "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion.

The Green Mile is the one I can think of for right now. My God, that movie tore me up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was so emotionally moving and sad at the same time. It's not fair!

I cried buckets once after watching The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and also at the end of Wuthering Heights when Heathcliff and Kathy's ghosts are seen walking the moors. There's something irresistibly tear-jerking about after-death reunions.

My other favorite sad movie: How Green Was My Valley.

Dancer in the Dark is a good tear jerker. Directed by Lars von Trier and staring Björk (she´s fantastic!)

I cried buckets during Saving Private Ryan and haven't been able to watch it again. Another tear-jerker for me was What Dreams May Come starring, ironically, Robin Williams.

Somewhere in Time is an interesting connection amongst all our favorites.

John Barry composed its score, as well as Out of Africa. Also, Somewhere in Time's author, Richard Matheson, also wrote What Dreams May Come.

Was funny to read Fiona's (optom3's) comments about her lack of crying at movies, which was something I didn't know about her. Hell's bells, when I stayed at her house for a month two years ago, I don't think I've ever seen anybody in my life that could cry quicker, just when we were sitting around drinking vodka and talking. Actually, she wasn't really "drinking vodka" -- was more like I was force-feeding her, although she didn't really put up a great defense in that regard, God love her.

Well, that's not a sad one, Lynne, for the same reason that Shawshank Redemption didn't make my list. How can you possibly be sad when you're listening to the inimitable (my fave actor of all time, so I'm a bit biased) Morgan Freeman's voice at the end, speaking of hope, and the fact that life will continue?

Reading back through my list of sad movies, it occurs to me that a common theme definitely resonates, and that is one of losing the love of your life, either through death, disappointment, or disappearance.

Ouch, I'm going to have to ponder that one for a while...

Well, I picked ones that made me tear up sometimes in places. I'm not one to cry, as a rule. Here's my list. I actually feel somewhat manipulated by movies that seem designed to elicit tears, which is why although Stepmom and Benjamin Button make me cry, they are not favorites, per se.
