The vacations thread 2008
« on: May 21, 2008, 12:43:58 pm »
Howdy BetterMostians,

many of you will remember it from last year, but we also have many new members, so here we go:

Summer is approaching quickly and vacation time comes along. On this thread, you can post (if you want, that is!) when you're going on vacations, so your BM friends will know you haven't dropped from the edge of the earth.

You can also post good wishes, welcome back messages and the like. To make the actual absence notes easier to find, you can highlight them by bolding, coloring or whatever.

Happy Holidays, friends, Tremblayans, BetterMostians! :D

What a good idea. I was worried about Artiste when he vanished for a couple of days!!! . It is strange how much you become used to people being around who you may never meet, but still form a bond with on some level.
Personally if more people dont come in and buy, fillets, sirloin and T bones (recession) I don't think we will be going anywhere, other than the beach which is about 15 mins away.

Hungary is beautiful, you will love it, so unspoilt still. The people are so friendly as well.Be prpared to put on a few pounds though, the food is quite heavy, although very tasty.
Just the mention of all the Scottish towns makes my eyes mist over. My parents are Scottish, and even when I left home,I always had one trip up to Scotland each year.
My kids loved it.People here ask me if I miss Englnd and I can honestly say I don't. I do however miss my half-term break to Scotland. The kids say exactly the same.
They have been to so many exotic places, and their best holiday memories are all Scotland.
Loch Lomond,Edinburgh,( to see the Tatoo ) Inverness, Ullapool, Oban,St.Andrews, and too many more to mention over the years.
I also miss being able to hop on a plane and in France in an hour.Could literally be having a coffee in Paris 3 hours after leaving home, big sigh!!!!!

Scotland is also one of my fav holiday memories. I think I've been to all the locations you mentioned. And to this day I regret missing the Military Tattoo. It started the same day we were in Edinburgh, but in the evening, and we couldn't stay for one day longer because we had to catch a ferry in Kingston/Hull.

I drank my first whiskey in Scotland (where else?). "You're in Scotland, Lady!" our host said when I first declined his offer . He was a sheepfarmer, btw. How fitting ;D.

I laughed when I read you had tried to turn down a ,wee dram.I can just hear the indignant/incredulous response. Glad he was a sheep farmer though.

I feel with the Edinburgh tattoo ,I have come full circle. My parents tok me and my brother to it when we were young kids.We sat under a blanket it was so cold.My brother was proudly sporting his first Kilt in the family tartan.
Fast forward and there am I with my 3 kids, under a blanket, with my oldest sporting his first kilt.In his mothers' tartan.Happy days, the sound of bagpipes to this day makes me all misty eyed, lump in throat.
I am incredibly proud of my Scottish heritage.

Oh for those days, before he became so obviously troubled.

I liked it for several reasons, some of the cities are not only beautiful but very unspoiled,The villages ,it was like stepping back in time,to less hectic days. The pace of life was much slower.I guess if you lived there it may be annoying, trying to get things done, but for a holiday it was lovely.

I found the people to be exceptionally frindly, it was a humbling experience. It was sort of like Austria but an Eastern european version.I have been to Poland as well and that was very similar.

You wont have a big problem with being vegetarian, as there are lots of starchy carbohydrate dishes, which are lovely, but just a bit heavy.
Some of the cities are obviously more cosmopolitan(ish) but the buildings are just so beautiful.

I am sure you will love it,I certainly did. Let me know what you think.

Kelda, it's true that Hungarian food is very meat-oriented.  But as Fiona said, starch too.  And mushrooms.  And fruit.  It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to live on mushroom soup, csipetke, and apple and cherry strudel for a few days!  :)

Barely being back from my US-trip, I'll head out tomorrow for two weeks in Turkey with my family.

I'll be away from the board from June, 23rd through July, 7th.

I hope I'll be able to check in from time to time, but who knows...

Oh, just found this thread.

Let's see......

In January I was in Virginia visiting with Truman, Wulfie, and Paul.

In March I was in California visiting brokies.

In April I was in Georgia visiting Rich.

In June (first week) I was in Wyoming with the brokies.

In June (last week) I was at the big Brokie gathering in UK.

In August I was in California again for the Brokie gathering.

Last weekend of September I'll be back in Virginia.

Haahaahaahaaa!   If I hadn't seen Brokeback, who knows what I would've done with my vacation time!

And here we are at the Grand Canyon!  (Mikaela is that little blue figure in the second pic)  ;D

We had a fabulous time--Sedona, Sunset Crater, Wupatki Indian Monument, Grand Canyon, Hopi mesas, Canyon de Chelly, Durango and Denver--all in a week.  We redlined it, but it was great fun.  8)
