Mamma Mia!
« on: July 11, 2008, 09:32:19 pm »
Most of us have seen the musical performed on stage. Some of us have seen the stage version of the musical more than a dozen times! *blush*

Now the famous ABBA musical starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Dominic Cooper is coming to a theater near you. Do you plan to see the movie version of Mamma Mia? :D

It looks fun and fluffy.

Have no real interest in seeing Meryl Streep try to sing or a rehash take of the movie "Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell", but the locations and Pierce Brosnan will be worth the price of admission alone.

I've been recently daydreaming and looking for homes to buy in the Greek Islands. *sigh*

(they're extremely affordable, BTW)

Worth it just for Mr, Brosnan himself. Until Heath he was top of my list,I have lost count of how many times I watched the Thomas Crowne affair. Those eyes, that accent.

I had to go with "Not Sure" because I'm "not sure" I'll have an opportunity to see it on screen, but I'd like to see it. I've never seen it on stage. A friend who works in a theater where a road company played told me the show was a lot better than he was expecting.  :D

I would like to see it... but NOT SURE I'll see it on the big screen...

If it gets rave reviews I'll probably make the effort to go... if there's not much buzz, I'll probably wait for DVD...

Funny you should ask, David!  I just found out yesterday that I guess I will be going to see this.  My younger sister is a big fan of the stage version and she's planning a girls night out centered around the movie as soon as she gets back from vacation in a couple weeks.  I've heard of "Mamma Mia" of course, but didn't know a lot about it. But when she told me Colin Firth was in it, that was all I needed to know!

You bet I'm going to see it! It's gotten great reviews here, and more than that - several of my friends have seen it already and they are simply gushing and squeeing about what great good fun it was. How well Meryl Streep did. How the music made them grin and hum and nearly dance in the aisles. How all the actors looked like they had jolly fun, making the film. How the locations were simply beautiful :) So yep, I'll be seeing it asap!!  :)

I love Abba and will primarily be going so I can hear their wonderful songs on a big, cinema sound system.  ;D

I'm so glad to hear you'll be going to see it Marie! You'll LOVE it! I haven't seen the movie yet obviously, so I'm hoping it's good, but I absolutely loved the stage musical. I'd need about 4 hands to count the number of times I went to see it! ;) :D

Abba was extremely popular here in the US back in the 1970's too Kerry. Their music always brings back lots and lots of happy memories for me. It's amazing how music can do that. When I listen to all those favorite childhood songs of mine, it's almost as if I stepped into a time machine. Abba was one of my favorite groups back then. :D

I'm not. I thought the trailer(s) looked rather stupid. However I do want to see it on stage.

I will be seeing TDK instead.

What was my favorite Abba song then, or now? I suppose it hasn't changed. Actually I have several favorites. Your choice of "Take a Chance on Me" was a favorite of mine, and so was Kelda's choice of "Dancing Queen".

I also loved SOS, Mamma Mia, Thank You For the Music and Voulez-vous.  :D

If I'm allowed to only choose one, it would probably be Dancing Queen. :)

That's right, Kelda. They were enormously popular here, right across the age spectrum from children to the elderly. There's something about the upbeat joyousness of their music that really does appeal to the Aussie psyche. I seem to recall they were presented with the key to the city, here in Sydney. There was mass hysteria wherever they went. There was quite a to-do when they stepped out onto the balcony of Sydney Town Hall.  :D

I'm seeing the movie tomorrow, even though I've heard some "less than positive" reviews already.

I'm not seeing TDK until August at the L.A. Brokie gathering.

My fave Abba song.........Hmmmm.........I love "Take a Chance On Me", and oddly enough, not long ago found myself strongly relating to "The Winner Takes It All".

Well, both Take a chance on me and The winner takes it all were performed with style in the movie. And Dancing Queen, and Voulez-vous....  - totally loved it. And Waterloo at the end - OH MY GOD!!  ;D

I've been to see it now and I just loved it to pieces. What a huge boost of fun! The actors looked like they were having such a great time with it. I'd seen the musical on stage before, so I knew what I was getting, mostly, the story is mainly fluff, but so what - this was nothing but enjoyable from A to Z. So much energetic fun, great dance numbers, the music makes you want to stand up and dance along with them of course, the Greek island locations are gorgeous, Meryl Streep was great in it, and can she ever sing....! I totally loved it. Only negative thing I can think of to say, is that Pierce Brosnan can't sing to save his life.

I think the place was sold out, everyone were enjoying themselves immensely.

So yeah. Would totally recommend it. I have no idea why this has gotten so luke-warm reviews on Rottentomatoes.  :-\ Here in Norway the reviews have been glowing, and it's well deserved.  :)

the stage show is brilliant - and has a lot of extras that the film does not have.

But the film was just as good - not least because it benefitted from the amazing scenery. And Julie Walters and Meyrl streep were great. I hope at 60 I have a quarter of the moves of Meryl!

I have a feeling that at the end of the year, Mamma Mia! will be on some critics' top ten lists, and for other critics, it will show up on their worst movies of the year list. It seems to be that people either love it or hate it.

I am in the love it camp, only because I had so much fun!

Loved it.

A couple of scenes were over the top, the actors straining for the pitch, but hey, it's a musical.

I didn't like the tying up the loose ends so neatly, they didn't really have to do that, but that's Hollywood.

OMG

I will buy this movie simply to drool over the setting.

I so want to live in the Greek islands.  I've even been perusing the housing.  Fairly cheap, actually, but of course that's only if I am able to make the same kind of money there as here...in a foreign country...where I don't speak the language.

It's a dream.

the loose ends were also tied up in the show too so to be fair they haven't hollywooded that part up.

Yes, I agree the scenery is beautiful.

I was interested to find out that a good proportion of it was filmed in Italy. My colleague went on a walking holiday on the italian coast last summer and saw meryl Streep getting an ice cream - she was very dissapointed not to see Pierce Brosnan!!

Hmm, now that you mention it, I guess some of the wooded scenes were probably filmed in Italy.  I am not aware of such lush forests growing on many small Greek islands.  They are pretty much bare rock.

still beautiful though eh? And the greek islands were used for other parts of the film - no idea which parts were filmed where though.

OMG, I saw Mamma Mia last night and it was wonderful! It was such a fun romp, an interesting plot, characters and the singing! Now mind you Pierece Brosnan does not have the greatest singing voice, but wow! The fact these actors are using their own voices is such a treat.

In places it is sappy and sweet but it is supposed to be. You get so caught up in the energy of the movie that the schtick of chasing one another across roofs during the performance of "Take a Chance On Me" does not seem lis schtick at all.

I laughed and I cried and I will see it again. Meryl Streep is amazing. Absolutly amazing!

Oh yes! I HAVE to see it again too. It was such a boost of positive energy. And Meryl Streep is a goddess.  Seriously.

And the locations... I must admit every time I've seen the trailer I've grinned a bit at the place that mail box is placed - it has to be the most scenic location for such a mundane item in the whole vide world.  ;)

It's great to see the film is doing such good box office. It's been the big summer hit here in Norway, of course - but in the US it's been chugging along strongly and surely and it's made 88 million dollars domestic so far - certain to go beyond 100, I would say.  :)

I saw it yesterday and I really enjoyed it! The scenery was gorgeous and Meryl Streep was wonderful as always. I was really surprised by Amanda Seyfried (Sophie). The only other role I've seen her in is the dumb one in Mean Girls, but I thought she was great in this!

There was a woman two rows in front of me who was just having a great time. She was dancing in her seat during most of the songs, and I saw her mouthing the words a lot also. It was almost as entertaining as the movie!

Tell you what, Norwegians are going totally bananas for Mamma Mia. After nine weeks in theatres, it's still in the top spot. It's by far the most popular film of the year, - it has sold more than twice as many tickets as The Dark Knight, and is just leaving TDK more in the dust for every day that passes. The decline in MM ticket sales from week to week is surprisingly minimal. People are going back and watching it again. And again. And now several cities have introduced sing-along showings as well, which has proved very popular.

I've seen it twice now but I feel the urge to see it again. A sing-along opportunity would be great!

Well, if the movie is ANYTHING like the original stage version of Mamma Mia, it wouldn't be any fun at all unless I went with somebody else, or better yet with a whole group of people. I saw the stage musical more than a dozen times including once at the Winter Garden Theater in New York back in 2002 and I always went with a group of friends. It's more fun that way.

Anyway, I don't think it's playing at the theaters here in Indianapolis anymore. I'll check the paper tomorrow. I can always buy it on DVD once it goes on sale. :)

I know what you mean.  When "Grease" was re-released, I didn't go alone.  It was more fun to be with a group and sing and dance with them.

Was lucky enough to get tickets w/ friends to see it in San Fran 2000.  It was the opening even before Broadway, and it was awesome!!!!!!!  I didn't realize then, how fortunate I was.

I LOVED the movie version too.  So much fun.  Different in some respects, but kept the basic concepts very much alive.

Actually took my in-laws to see the movie, and we all GROOVED!  lol

Mamma Mia grossed USD 569 millions in cinemas world-wide. That's no. 49 on the all-time ranking. Go, Abba and Meryl!  :)

I have the film on my wish list for X-mas.

But would you believe it, this weekend, after 21 weeks on the charts, and after the DVD has been released, Mamma Mia was still No. 9 at the Norwegian Box Office. By now, the film has sold well over 1.1 million cinama tickets (and the country's entire population is roughly only 4 times that size.)
