Checking www.findagrave.com today I happened upon a photo that has been posted of "The family plot" where the ashes of Sir Frank Ledger and kin have been scattered over the years. The caption read this is where Heath's ashes were spread as well and a marker will eventually appear for him as well.

Thanks for posting this Truman.  It's surprising to me that only the death dates are on the markers, not the birth dates.  Why do you think that is?

Not written in a way that really make sense.  And wouldn't someone's ashes be buried  in a place like that, not scattered?

They could well be buried, I would say that unless the person was there they are probably assuming they were scattered, or maybe they picked it up from Lureen by watching BBM a hundred times

Maybe its an Aussie thing.....Most plaques that I have seen here (that I can remember) have the date of death, then underneath, have the deceased age......

And I think they have probably been "scattered".....the usual thing if they are not scattered is for the urn or the ashes to be placed in a wall, and not buried in the ground.

Something else, the plot looks like it could do with some cleaning up. Doesnt look very tidy at all.

Heath's grandmother Esma died a year before Matilda was born.

It's a good question... it looks like the marker for Esma Ledger shows her birth year... 1928.  Maybe it simply comes down to personal wish or stipulation.  For the others they give their age... so maybe they just expect the visitor to subtract.

As to the question about the ashes being scattered vs. buried... most of my recent ancestors on my Dad's side (my Grandma, Grandpa and Step-Grandma) were all cremated and had their ashes scattered.  I don't think there's a marker anywhere for any of them.

But, just as what happened with Jack in BBM, sometimes ashes are divided so you can do more than one thing... i.e. bury half in Childress with a stone and send the other half up to Lightning Flat in the hopes they'll be scattered.

Well, as I mentioned above, many members of my Dad's family were cremated.  To me there's something very appealing and peaceful about the idea of having ashes scattered in a favorite place, etc. 

I can see why it might be an upsetting idea to some people.  But, I sort of think that I would like to be cremated too, although I haven't really throught all that much about it for myself personally yet.

Nah I don't think it is stupid, it is something we all have to get our mind around.

I think I would like to just be buried as soon as I am gone with no fanfare.

My mom and dad were both cremated.  I like think I might want to be cremated too.   Have my ashes scattered in the mountains and lakes around Lake tahoe where I hiked and camped and worked when I was a kid.  Seems it might be serene.  My sis still lives there and provided she lives longer than me she could scatter my ashes.

Well, when you really think about it essentially all options are pretty creepy/ unnerving once a person passes away (at least it seems that way to me).

But, people need to plan for what seems the most appropriate/comfortable/important for themselves when it comes to matters such as these grim decisions.

I still can't quite get over the resonance that Heath's cremation has with BBM and the protracted discussions about ashes and scattering ashes in BBM.  It's just uncanny.

I agree. I want to be cremated, and so does my dad. I think my mom wants to be buried, and I am not so sure of my sister. It just seems better and I would love to be scattered somewhere close to me.

The fact is, that in the future, I dont think we will have much choice, as land for burials becomes scarcer.

I like the idea of being cremated and having my ashes thrown over a nice peaceful place that was special to me while alive.

I wonder if, like Jack, Heath's ashes were divided with some remaining here in Australia and some being taken back to America for Matilda's sake.

Regardless of where they are, Heath is in the hearts of us all over the world. Whenever I think of him, I think of him riding his horse up that mountain.

It's horrible isn't it? I never thought while I was sobbing my way through that part of the movie that not so very long after I would be sobbing in real life for Heath.The cremation link just made it even more distressing.Yet still the wheel keeps turning somehow.

I know how you feel, optom. The feeling just hurts like hot knives plunging into flesh. Also, believe it or not, the feeling also make me a little sick to my stomach if I think about to intensely.
