Edit by Penthesilea:

A special Welcome to all BetterMostians who are new to this game!

We're playing „What is it?“. David posted a picture of an obscure object and an accompanying poll with different possibilities of what it could be.
That's where you come into the game: take a sharp look and venture a guess what it might be. Just click on what you think is the most likely explanation. And don't forget to post and tell us about your vote, so David knows who to give the prizes to :D.

This time the prize is a (virtual) lamb from Jack and Ennis (you know „there're thousands of them“ - direct quote from Jack).  But sometimes there are other prizes to win. You already missed the opportunity to win a cow&calf  to get your own C&C operation started. So keep your eyes open for more „What is it?“ games in the next days weeks months decades ;).

Or set up your own „What is it?“ game – everybody is welcome to it.

Join the fun! :D :D :D

This object is made of metal and is about 8 inches long.

The left side of the object is hinged and opens up.

Dont't forget to vote and also post a message telling us your guess! You can't win a lamb from Ennis and Jack unless you vote and also tell us what you think it is! :D

OK......seeing everyone in the northern hemisphere is still asleep, I wil go first.

It looks like a mould of some sort, so I will have to go for a mould for making tools

But then again, that is probably too obvious, its probably something else.

O oh...just noticed two other votes up there, but whoever voted have NOT posted who they are...

I voted for "tool for pouring hot molten metal out into cast iron molds"

This thingie is very solid and mad of thick metal. It looks like it was made for pouring/casting something because of the spouts. When I saw it I thought of molten metal immediately, and so I go with this vote.
We'll see .

Hmmm...

A mold for making tools?  Doesn't really look like any mold I've ever seen...  If you were to put a wooden handle in one end and pour moltan metal into the other you will burn the handle and it won't stay on.  Tools with a wooden handle are usually cast with a hole for the handle which is added later.

A tool for pouring mortar on bricks?    Hard to see how that would be useful for that purpose.  Mortar is usually applied with a trowel by hand from a hod.  Nothing about this looks useful for that purpose.

A tool for loading large barrel antique shot guns?    Why would there be a pour spout in the direction opposite to how the shot would then flow?

Device for adding nutrients into farm animals water and feed    Possibly...

Tool for pouring hot molten metal out into cast iron molds?   I'm not seeing it.

A device for feeding wild birds?   It would seem rather overbuilt for that purpose.

Early plant watering device    Somehow a hose, sprinkler, and a watering can seem much more convenient.

Early rain water gauge?    As opposed to a gauge for measuring rain water later in the day?  How would you get an accurate measurement once it is full?

Tool for mashing course fertilizer into powder?  I suppose any large metallic lump could be used for that purpose.

Rodent trap?  Spring traps have been around for a long time and would certainly seem to be more efficient for that purpose.

I will be curious to see the real use revealed...

It looks like the bowl part shows the most wear; so, I voted for the tool for pouring molten metal.

And, David, I see it's from Indiana!

I voted for A mold for making tools.  I guess the hinged parts look like a mold to me...maybe the excess runs into the bowl part....?  I actually have no idea, but this is fun!

Bruce, I enjoyed reading your thoughtful ideas!  Quite impressive.  :)

Great job, again, David - thanks!

Tool for pouring hot molten metal out into cast iron molds

I voted for that.

I used to work at a summer job--had to use molten metal to put brake cables together. It was fun! But hot. That reminds me a little of my press.

I'm here! :D

I've been watching 20/20 on ABC. They are doing a special on the British Monarchy. It's a repeat but quite interesting even the second time around. :)

I know ..... that mould looks like a mallet ... how about ... you put a wooden stick into the groove ... put some sort of metal in the spoon ... melt it ... then pour it through the funnel and leave it to cool down ... et voila ... you have a mallet  ;D

That would work .... still doesn't explain the pouring spout on the spoon thingie though .... unless that's just to get rid of any excess  metal!!  I dunno  ???

Hey I can't change my answer  :-\

Susie, I'll fix the poll so you all can change your answers. If you do change your vote, make sure you tell us what you changed it to!  :)

Okay, it's time to announce the answer!

In a few quick seconds you all will know what that weird looking thing is up there! :D

Are you ready to hear the answer?

Yup, we DO have a weener.... err.... WINNER!!! More than one! :D :D

Kerry, you promised me a new game!!! Where is it? >:(

Maybe he'll post one tonight!

Oh MAN! I almost spilled my coke in my lap! (I really almost did, too! I ain't lying! My elbow bumped it when I was reaching for the mouse! >:( )

Oh yeah.... the game. I almost forgot all about it!

Sue should have taken Jess' advice...................................

and switched her answer......................................

Because it's a........................................

MOLD FOR MAKING TOOLS!!!

Specifically a mold for making a hammer! The little ladle on the side is used to hold the molten metal. Then the device is tipped to allow the molten metal to pour into the hammer mold located on the left.

A handle is attached through the bottom of the mold. Here's some more information about it....

So...................

Sue (Katie77) wins a lamb............

Marie wins a lamb............

and.......

Jess wins a lamb..................

Congratulations Sue, Marie and Jess!!! :D :D :D

Thanks for my lamb, David!   :)

that is a great item! I knew that Horat was a machinery company which is why I thought it was a different kind of mold.  The Horat factory was taken over by a plastics molding company after that, in the 1930's sometime.  I liked the instructions:  'When hammer is battered, melt it and use the same metal for making another!

Awwww...  I don't have such good luck with these games.  The mold for making tools option would have been my second guess.  The mold/ pouring aspect of the object seemed pretty clear.  But, I went for the wrong function.

Oh well.  I'll just have to keep trying my hand at these games.  I'd really like to have a flock of lambs. :)

Did you sniff your lamb? Did you smell his fur? I gave him a shampoo and a bath! And I used a very special and expensive shampoo. He should smell good. :)

Here's what "babbitt" is:  any of various alloys of tin with smaller amounts of antimony and copper, used as an antifriction lining for bearings.
