Brokeback Fans Torment Author Proulx

Brokeback Mountain author Annie Proulx has told The Wall Street Journal that her short story, which was made into the hit movie of the same name, has become a “source of constant irritation in my private life.””There are countless people out there who think the story is open range to explore their fantasies and to correct what they see as an unbearably disappointing story,” she told the newspaper. “They constantly send ghastly manuscripts and pornish rewrites of the story to me, expecting me to reply with praise and applause for ‘fixing’ the story. They certainly don’t get the message that if you can’t fix it you’ve got to stand it,” she said. “Most of these ‘fix-it’ tales have the character Ennis finding a husky boyfriend and living happily ever after, or discovering the character Jack is not really dead after all, or having the two men’s children meet and marry, etc., etc. ... Beneath every mangled rewrite is the unspoken assumption that because they are men they can write this story better than a woman can.”

Isn't there another thread about this?  I might be thinking of another forum, or maybe even the Brokeback Yahoo group.

I have to say until Brokeback I was never really interested in fanfics. It was only with BBM that I started seriously looking at fanfics though. There are some that are IMHO extremely good (thinking particularly of the Missing Motel Moments/Pine Creek/Warmest Week of the Year trilogy and Human Interest/Two Crows Joy, which I love), and which don't fundamentally alter the basics of the story and in which their Jack and Ennis are true to the original characters in the SS (though admittedly HI/TCJ is an alternative ending for the story, but Jack and Ennis are still fundamentally the Jack and Ennis from the SS though). I don't have any time though for the ones where the kids magically meet up etc. To me that's just not Brokeback. Each to their own though. Just my 2c worth.

Yes, Marge, there is -- under the Open Forum, rather than the Fanfic one -- "Article:  Brokeback Mountain Author Slams Movie's Fans" -- I started it about a week ago, and it's gotten quite a bit of replies since.
