Numa Numa

Shakesthecoffecan:
Over the weekend I was visiting Youtube and learned about an internet phenomenon, the "Numa Numa Dance".

Now of course the internet is a big place, and unless you are someone who stay up to date on everything like Cellardwellar you may not know about it, so I will attempt to present an evolutionary examination of it.

It begins in 2003 with the release of the song Dragostea din tei by the Moldovan pop group Ozone. The lyrics, in Romanian, have various translations, one possible meaning of the title is "Love from the Lime trees".  It was released on most European Pop charts the following year and enjoyed a long ride until 2006. Here is the video:

haahaahaaa!

the first time I heard of "numa numa" was the video of the guy lip syching it with a vid he made of it.

Shakesthecoffecan:
According to various wikipedia articles relating to the song and the subsequent dance, there were versions released in other countries, but it failed to make much of a dint on American popculture. (I am not going to suppose why).

It took instead, the late night inspiration of Gary Brolsma, a 20 year old resident of Saddle River, New Jersey (close to the place of death of former U.S. President Richard Nixon) who apparently liked the song so much he posted a representation of his enthusiasm:

Pepole liked what they saw.

Inspired by this young man, people all over the world began making their own Numa Numa Dnce videos and posting them:
