I read this in Rome and got to visit some of the locations! I enjoyed it even more than Da Vinci Code! I see a young Marcello Mastroanni or Giancarlo Giannini in the priest role and Jean-Louis Trintignant in the Tom Hanks role. So I'll probably pass on the movie!!

From an IMDb poster:

Ewan used the F word at least twice in every sentence while off camera,
but in a nice friendly Scottish way.

He was very generous with his time - he spent a whole day off camera, full costume and makeup, acting for others for the reaction shots.

He had to chew (nicotine??) gum full-time between shots, and was very friendly to all the crew and extras.

Good guy.

Ron Howard and company have changed the Italian name of Ewan McGregor's character to an Irish one according to the newly updated official website.

*sigh*  >:(

Priest Spy on ‘Demons’ Set

A&D's Tom Hanks, Ayelet Zurer and Ron Howard. (Reuters)

The Catholic League is closely tracking Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code sequel that opens this May. They’ve covered the “historical inaccuracies” angle, the “apologetics booklet” angle, and now, thanks to a priest spy, they say they’ve found a smoking gun proving the movie’s anti-Catholicism.

“Dressed casually, so no one knew he was a priest,” Father Bernard O’Connor “hung out with the film crew last summer for two days when they were filming in Rome.”

So reports Bill Donohue in his March 4 press release.

“A person self-described as a ‘production official,’ told the Canadian priest that Brown spoke for the majority of those working on the movie when he said, ‘Like most of us, he [Brown] often says that he would do anything to demolish that detestable institution, the Catholic Church.’ He credited the media for the ‘demise’ of the Church. This same person opined that the Catholic Church ‘is humanity’s chief enemy,’ adding that this sentiment is reflective of those in Hollywood.”

Donohue concludes with a challenge.

“So the cat is out of the bag,” he writes. “If anyone associated with the movie wants to debate me on anything I’ve said, I would be glad to do so.”

Howard accuses Vatican of blocking movie

ROME – Director Ron Howard claimed Sunday that the Vatican interfered with efforts to get permits to shoot certain scenes of his "Angels & Demons" religious thriller in Rome — a charge the Vatican said was purely a publicity stunt.

This is some crazy ass bullshit!

Quote
"When you come to film in Rome, the official statement to you is that the Vatican has no influence," he said. "Everything progressed very smoothly, but unofficially a couple of days before we were to start filming in several of our locations, it was explained to us that through back channels and so forth that the Vatican had exerted some influence."

Yeah. That's what I thought. The Vatican is a separate country and has no power over Rome. Rome is in Italy which is a different COUNTRY.

This is an example of the Catholic Church once again meddling in the affairs of those they do not agree with. And they will do anything and everything in their power - apparently even illegally - in order to achieve their ends.
