In the story, Annie Proulx makes it clear that Jack was crazy to leave home as fast as possible. Later on, it's clear in the movie that he would be more than happy to leave his family for a sweet life running a little cow and calf operation with Ennis.

Maybe Jack did not want to leave the nest, because he was a gay man?
