The Tea Poll
« on: March 22, 2009, 02:12:31 pm »
I am allowing people to vote for two options, just in case some enjoy both hot and cold tea.

When I'm drinking iced (cold) tea, I like to drink it plain, with nothing in it. If I'm drinking hot tea, I like some sugar in it otherwise it just tastes like hot water. :P

While I've always liked both coffee and tea.  Lately, I find myself ordering tea more and more.  I prefer hot tea with nothing added.  And, I also like unsweetened iced tea.

Sometimes for a special treat I like chai tea lattes... but having one of those constitutes a dessert for me, not really a cup of tea as just a beverage.

Hot with milk and sweetner.
Cold with ice, lemon and sweetner.

If it's a fragrant tea - jasmine or something similar, then I take it plain hot or cold.

I like both hot and cold tea.  I prefer them both plain, but if I added anything it would be a lemon wedge to my cold tea.   :)

I went all winter without a sniffle, but now I've got a cold so I'm actually having a cup of hot green tea right now - very soothing!

The green tea will get rid of that cold for you, Marie! Black tea is also an immune system booster. :)

I was reading an interesting article posted on MSNBC. It said that people who drank 5 cups of black tea a day for two weeks transformed their immune system T cells into "Hulk cells" capable of pumping out 10 times as much cold and flu virus fighting interferon. :)

They said Green tea would probably have the same results.

Like most Aussies we are brought up with having a cup of tea with a meal.

Growing up, there was always a teapot of tea made, to drink after we had finished eating most meals.

I have hot tea, with milk and sugar. I like it sweet so have two or three teaspoonfuls of sugar, depending on the size of the cup.

Contrary to what people often think about us tea drinkers, I dont drink it out of a little cup with my little finger poking out as I hold the cup. I drink it out of a mug.

But when I was a kid, we always have a cup and saucer on the table in front of our plate for our cup of tea.

Since everyone mostly uses tea bags now, most of the new generation have never had a tea pot, or used loose tea leaves to make the tea.

I have four or five cups of tea a day. Rarely drink coffee at home, but if I go to Mcdonalds I always get coffee.

Did you take the coffee poll, Sue?

I love iced tea in the summer, but unlike the Southerners I don't like my iced tea sweet. I drink it plain. I rarely drink hot tea though, although I do like hot tea. I just never think about making any. :-\

I chose other...I like the iced tea in the South with lemon...It is usually served sweetened, but I try to pick unsweetened occasionally so I consume less sugar.

I also love hot tea with lemon and honey, both the traditional caffeinated and some herbal varieties.

Ew! Cream in tea?   :o  That's just not right!   :P  ;)

But seriously, I prefer my tea hot, brewed in a pot (no tea bags for me, thank you) and served with sugar and milk (lactose-free milk, because I'm lactose intolerant).

I love tea!  :D

Maybe I should change the poll? This shows how much I know about tea!

After reading that article on MSNBC Shasta told me about,

Here it is (scroll through the pictures and you'll find the section on black tea)

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28982279/wid/11915773/?pg=10

I bought three boxes of black tea yesterday. And I drank five cups of it today. Well, that's a lie, sort of, I drank 2 cups of it, but I put 3 tea bags in one cup and two in another. I think it is a good idea to build up my immune system. Tormorrow I will do it again. I also take green tea pills. I've been taking them for awhile now.

Btw, the black tea is pretty damn good. I think they put other spices in there as well. It's very aromatic. :)

If you are really keen to become serious about tea drinking, David, you could maybe consider getting yourself a teapot.   :)

When making tea at home, I always use a good quality tea (Twinings is my favourite) and brew the leaves (never tea bags) in a teapot. It makes the whole ritual more fun and you get the lovely, welcoming, homely smell of the tea brewing, which I love. You probably don't need a full tea set, with sugar bowl and milk jug, because I understand you drink it  black. Try your tea with a thin slice of lemon. I believe it's very nice (I drink mine with sugar and milk). Get a good quality tea cup and saucer to complete the experience.   :D

I just read your post Kerry, and I know what you mean with using tea leaves and brewing the tea.

Just in case you are not familiar with the making of tea, like this, David....you put the tea leaves in the tea pot, we used to to always put a teaspoon of tea for as many cups we wanted, then an extra teaspoon as well, which we said was "for the pot".

You then add boiling water to the teapot. And wait a few minutes for the tea to "brew", before pouring into a cup.

Just thought I would clear that up....I had this awful visual of David putting the actual tea pot on the stove.

That's not awful Sue. That's what I was fixing to do.

How do you do it? Seriously. If not on the stove, where then?

Should this Yank stick to tea bags after all? I really don't know if they even sell loose tea leaves over here. ???

Tea leaves are sure to be available there somewhere, David. Try a specialist coffee and tea emporium. Once you've had tea leaves, you'll never use tea bags again. All I can taste when I use tea bags is wet paper!  :P

Here's my technique for brewing a pot of tea:

1. Boil water in electric jug or kettle or however else you would normally boil water for your coffee.

2. Once the water is boiled, pour a generous slurp into the teapot and swill it around, to warm the teapot.

3. Empty the warming water out of the teapot.

4. While the teapot is still warm, add tea leaves to taste, depending on whether you like your tea weak or strong. I like quite strong tea so normally add two tablespoons to a 4-cup teapot. As Sue said, it is traditional to add one teaspoon of tea per person, plus an extra teaspoon "for the pot," which is probably about the same as my two tablespoons.

5. Put lid on teapot and allow the tea to brew for approximately 3-5 minutes (Twinings recommendation).

6. Using a tea strainer, pour the tea into a tea cup, leaving enough room for milk and sugar if required. Black tea without sugar is often served with a thin half-slice (not wedge) of lemon.

7. Milk and sugar (if required) should always be added after  the tea has been poured. It must never be placed in the tea cup before the tea is poured.

Enjoy!   :D

I remember seeing loose tea when I was a kid. And many people also had a teapot in their homes. In fact I think I remember my Mom having one.

So the tea is simply put in the pot with the water? There isn't some type of compartment inside the teapot for the tea leaves? That must be why the tea strainer is used. It's sounds a bit complicated Kerry. Almost like a ritual. But I will keep my eyes open for a teapot. I'm all for it if it makes the tea taste better.

I just had my two cups of black tea today. The first cup was this morning and I used 3 tea bags. I used 2 tea bags for the second cup. So that's five tea bags! I'm going to get those hulk immune cells in 2 weeks if I keep it up. I also take green tea pills (2 twice a day) so I may get them even before the 2 weeks are up! :)

John's family harkens from West Virginia where they drink iced tea constantly.  I loathe iced tea, sweetened or otherwise.  I'll put up with hot tea or coffee, but I'd never think of making it myself.  There are Phil Beverage Rules - fruit juice or water before noon, soda, water or milk after noon, water at night.  If it's a diet soda, I'll drink it, excepting Tab which is revolting, and grape soda which should be unlawful.  I don't drink alcoholic beverages of any kind so that leaves that out.  I'm more of a hot chocolate person for a heated beverage, but not with hot milk, which usually makes me sick to my stomach for some reason.

There are teapots with such a compartment, David, eliminating the need for a strainer when pouring. However, I think they're quite a modern invention. One usually sees such internal infusers in modern, glass teapots. Certainly, traditional china teapots don't have them.

Get yourself a teapot and try it, David. I think you'll like it. Is there a Chinatown there in Indianapolis? If so, that's where you'll be able to get a very good, inexpensive, porcelain teapot. In my experience, they make an excellent "cuppa."   :D

Oh, what a wonderful collection. I love teapots. They're such jolly little things. They make me smile. I especially love the one at the front, second from the left. My maternal grandmother (1869-1960) had one just like it.

Thank you Kerry. Yeah, I have a thing for odd tea pots, I have little ones sitting on my window sills around the house, each has its own story of where I got it from.

It is funny listening to David, about making a pot of tea. Something that we Aussies, just take for granted, cause we grew up with it.  Sadly though, a lot of Aussies  in their 20's and 30's probably have never made a pot of tea either.

Hey Kerry, remember the tea pot "cozy"?.....a little crocheted or knitted cover that fitted over the teapot to keep the contents hot.

Oh, and something else, I noticed in one of your posts. You mentioned boiling the water in a jug.  Im not sure if they have "jugs" over there in the US. I remember one time I mentioned "jug" to an American, and was asked if I meant "female breasts"........

Gosh. Tea and teapots seems to be a big subject. Such variety.  :)

I'm a tea junkie, and have several cups per day. Mostly Earl Grey, with milk and sugar.
Better than having too much coffee (which I also love) because tea has much less caffeine.
Chai tea is great, too; in essence form, in hot milk.
Don't get much opportunity to have the old Aussie billy tea, black with sugar and a gum leaf thrown in to add some zest.

Do we have a Chinatown here? You mean like in San Francisco? No, we don't have anything like that here. We really don't have ethnic neighborhoods here. There are many Asian people here but they don't have their own unique area, at least not that I'm aware of. We have a mall here in town called the Fashion Mall. It's up at Keystone at the Crossing, not far from my Dad's house. They would probably have those things for sale there. I will check the next time I'm in the area. :)

That's a nice teapot collection ! :)  My Mom and Dad collect teapots too.  My parents only display them.  There's only one teapot that they actually use for making tea... but they own dozens of teapots.

Its my cowboy coffee table.......

That's very impressive, Sue.   But, why do you put your teapots on a coffee table?

LOL.......well, you see, I dont usually have all those teapots on the coffee table....I have them all around the house, and I just put them on the coffee table to take a photo of them.

But a good question.....why do we call those small tables we have in the loungeroom, a "coffee table"...?? When I know mine has never been used for coffee.

Do you call them "coffee tables" over there.

We sure do.  Although mine is usually used for cocktails!

My Mother always loved pottery. In the last couple years of her life she decided to take pottery classes at the local art center. She really enjoyed those classes and she was the first to admit she wasn't very good at it. But she had fun and I suppose that is the important part.

Anyway, I'm always coming across a piece of pottery she made tucked away somewhere at Dad's house. A couple of days ago I found a little teapot Mom made just a few months before she died. I found it in a box inside a cupboard. So, since this is the tea poll, I thought I would take a couple of pictures and share it with you. :)

The teapot is very tiny - about 5 inches tall and 6 or 7 inches from the spout to the handle.

I adore your Mum's teapot, David. How wonderful that you have something so intimate to remember you mother by; something made with her very own hands. I love teapots. There's something so merry about them. They're happy little things. And this teapot is no exception. I love the shape and the rustic glaze too. It can't have been easy to fashion and shape. I imagine your Mum would have modeled all the sections separately; the body, spout, lid and handle; before joining them, prior to firing in the kiln. Though I know nothing about pottery, I imagine that would be quite a complex process. By comparison, I would guess fashioning a simple bowl would be quite simple. Though I have some very precious mementos of my own mother, including a jumper she knitted for me not long before she passed away, I do not have anything like this lovely teapot to treasure. I think you should make a nice pot of tea in your Mum's teapot, David, and drink a toast to her.

I'm with Sue thats a treasure David

It made me smile reading your tea making instructions Kerry, I can still see my Mum doing that even though it was some years ago

As for me, I will drink tea if I am at someones house and theres no coffee, but I'll have it black.

If I drink tea at home (which is pretty infrequent cause we have an expresso coffee machine) I'll have a fruit tea. My favourite is grape and pomegranite

I found it!!

I've been busy cleaning out the cupboards (again!) and I found the little teapot from my youth. This was Mom's teapot and she used it quite a bit. It is porcelain and it has raised flowers across the top. I remember seeing this teapot when I was little, and at some point in time Mom must have safely stored it away. I'll bet it's been inside that cupboard for 25 years or more. I'm not sure if it was handed down to her or if she bought it. It has "England" stamped on the bottom.

Thanks Kerry! :-*

Yes, I will probably use this teapot. First I have to find some tea sold loose and not in bags. I've found that loose tea is fairly difficult to find around here. Nearly everyone uses teabags here in the Midwest. We have a place close to here called the Fashion Mall. They probably sell loose tea in one of the stores in that mall. The next time I'm out that way I will go in there and check. :)
