Happiest Birthday, John.  I'm so glad I can wish you that here, and that I have had the pleasure and honor of not just knowing you, but meeting you face-to-face.  You are such a literate and amusing and delightful voice in the ever-expanding BBM soundtrack, and I'm happy that you are celebrating yet another year where we continue to have the great benefit of your company.

So best birthday wishes, and here's to a joyous celebration of you!

"I was really Mister Sweaty Palms," [Eric Goldberg] recalls. "What if he didn't like it?" Hirschfeld was delighted with the film; his wife Louise called it "the best birthday present he ever could have gotten."

Rhapsody in Blue: Fantasia 2000's
Jewel in the Crown

by Charles Solomon

"Rhapsody in Blue" will be one of
many highpoints in Fantasia 2000.
© Disney Enterprises, Inc.

The most charming piece in Walt Disney Feature Animation's Fantasia 2000  is the stylish portrait of New York in its palmier days, set to George Gershwin's 1924 "Rhapsody in Blue"  and drawn in the style of caricaturist Al Hirschfeld. The segment was directed by Eric Goldberg, who animated the mercurial Genie in Aladdin;  the art director was Susan Goldberg -- a rare example of a husband and wife creative team in animation.

"Rhapsody"  follows four restless individuals through `30s Gotham. Rachel, a tiny girl, is weary of being dragged to endless private lessons by her governess; John longs to be free of his battle-ax wife and her spoiled lapdog. Sad-eyed Joe searches for a job, while Duke, an African-American construction worker, dreams of being a jazz drummer. A series of coincidences and the magic of the city make each of their dreams come true.

"New York embraces all types of people, and they're all walking the streets at the same time," explains Eric. "How people of such diverse backgrounds affect one another when they live so closely together really interested me. We devised a story where they all help each other achieve their goals -- without ever realizing that they're helping one another. `Rhapsody' has always been one of my favorite pieces of classical music, and the combination of Hirschfeld and Gershwin to evoke 1930's New York seemed like a real winner."

Eric got the idea for "Rhapsody" when he was finishing work on Aladdin.  He approached Hirschfeld, who gave his blessings to the project. After completing the "Carnival of the Animals"  segment of Fantasia, on which he and Susan also collaborated, Eric storyboarded the entire film. When production halted on the feature Kingdom in the Sun  to rework its story, the Goldbergs pitched "Rhapsody" to Disney Feature Animation President Tom Schumacher as a down time project for the Kingdom artists. They received the go-ahead to make it as a short.

Hirschfeld's celebrated caricatures display a marvelous elegance and economy of line. But they're static works that show their subjects from a single perspective: "Rhapsody" required the animators to move the characters in three dimensions while maintaining his polished minimalism.

"I animated the scene where Gershwin himself plays the piano, so I had to deal with making the figure look like a Hirschfeld drawing turning in three dimensions without losing any of the design qualities," says Eric. "We shot live-action of Ralph Grierson, who plays the piano in the piece, then Kent Holliday and I sat down together and determined which fingers hit which keys on which notes. But not only did the fingers have to hit the right keys at the right time, they had to look like Hirschfeld fingers -- I had to curl one up or crack a knuckle in a way that resembles a Hirschfeld drawing. It was fraught with challenges, but it was darned fun to do."

It's obvious that the other animators also enjoyed making "Rhapsody." There's an almost tangible exuberance to the animation. The characters move with a grace that is markedly freer than their counterparts in the recent Disney features.

"We had touched on Hirschfeld's style in Aladdin,  but we went a lot further in this film, trying to do his line," recalls animator Andreas Deja. "The fascinating thing about Hirschfeld's figures is the economy and fluidity of that line: one S-curve can describe a whole body; ordinarily in animation, we break a figure down into a series of body parts that move in individual ways. When you're dealing with a Hirschfeld design, everything follows one main rhythm. It forces you to think very clearly and directly, and in a more graphic way."

Preserving that elegant line was a major concern: "Emily Jiuliano, who was our co-head of clean-up, was our `Keeper of the Line,'" says Eric. "She made sure that everybody got a Hirschfeld line on the screen with a beautiful thick and thin. She was quality control and artistic control, and did a spectacular job." But "Rhapsody" is more than black lines, however graceful. The characters move through a brightly colored city that echoes their various moods. Its bold colors and graphic backgrounds recall the more stylish UPA films of the early `50s.

"Color has an emotional value, and you can emphasize the emotions in a scene by adding or taking away colors," explains Susan. "For inspiration, I went back to a book Hirschfeld did about nightclub singers and dancers called `Hirschfeld in Harlem,'  and to the books he did with S.J. Perlman. He used areas of flat color behind black and white drawings to bring out the line. I chose my palette from those `30s and `40s colors: grayed blues, a lot of black, a lot of red. Having lived in New York, I also tried to bring in the city's smoky blues and purples."

Appropriately, many of the characters in this colorful city are caricatures: John is modeled after author John Culhane; Rachel is based on the Goldberg's younger daughter. Eric, Susan and young versions of Hirschfeld and his second wife, Dolly, can be glimpsed in the crowd that emerges from a posh hotel.

Although overtime and last-minute crunches are common in animation, "Rhapsody in Blue" was completed two months ahead of schedule and under budget. The heads of the Disney studio added "Rhapsody" to Fantasia 2000, when they decided to eliminate all of the material from the original film except "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."

Eric showed Hirschfeld a version of "Rhapsody" that was fully animated and about 60% in color on a visit to New York, shortly before the artist's 96th birthday. "I was really Mister Sweaty Palms," he recalls. "What if he didn't like it?" Hirschfeld was delighted with the film; his wife Louise called it "the best birthday present he ever could have gotten."

"I'm very pleased with what they did: it's a marvelous job," Hirschfeld said in a recent telephone interview. "Eric seems to have understood what I've tried to do in my drawings. Again, I'm very pleased with it, and I'm anxious to see the finished film."

Charles Solomon is an internationally respected critic and historian of animation. His most recent books include The Disney That Never Was (Hyperion, 1995), Les Pionniers du Dessin Animé Américain (Dreamland, Paris, 1996) and Enchanted Drawings: The History of Animation (Knopf, 1989; reprinted, Wings, 1994). His writings on the subject have appeared in TV Guide, Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times, Modern Maturity, Film Comment, The Hollywood Reporter, Millimeter, and The Manchester Guardian, and have been reprinted in newspapers and professional journals in the United States, Canada, France, Russia, Britain, Israel, the Netherlands and Japan.

Happy birthday to New York John!! N-joY the following New Yorkian version of "Hush Little Baby" performed by Garrison Keillor on December 27, 2008:

Hush Little Baby

Hush little baby, don't say a word
Papa's gonna take you to West Forty-third
To Town Hall just off Times Square
To see a broadcast go on the air
And if we don't care for radio
We'll go to Radio City to the Christmas show,
And if the Rockettes have sore feet,
Papa's gonna take you to Bleecker Street
And if we see no artists there
Papa's gonna take you to Washington Square
Where we can play chess with the chess wonks
Who come down everyday from the Bronx
And if it's boring and you let the wonk win
Papa's gonna take you to the Algonquin
And if the Round Table is not so round
We'll take a Circle Line cruise to the Long Island Sound
And if the cruise is a great big snooze
Because it's one of those rainy days
Papa's gonna take you to Cartier's
And if the diamonds do not amaze
Papa's gonna take you to some Broadway plays
And if the theater is full of Missourians
And there's too much uplift and not enough prurience
And the audience gets restless and vocal
Papa's gonna take you on the Broadway local
And if they won't move over and give you and me room
Papa's gonna take you to the Russian Tea Room
And if the blinis seem just too small
We'll go next door to Carnegie Hall,
And if it's some choir singing Messiah
Papa's gonna take you to Gray's Papaya
And if the papaya leaves you feeling dry
We'll go to the 92nd Street Y
And if the poetry reading's a bore
And the metaphors you've heard before
And the poets' muse is a much too solemn muse
Papa's gonna take you to St. Bartholomew's
And if the homily bores you to tears,
Papa's gonna take you to the Chelsea Piers
And if the locker room is just too smelly
Papa's gonna take you to Carnegie Deli
And if it's crowded and there's a long line
Of Midwesterners waiting to dine
And at the end you see a man
Who looks like your uncle from Mandan
We'll tiptoe away nice and slow
Over to the Oyster Bar we'll go
And if the Oyster Bar is fresh out of oysters
Papa's gonna take you up to the Cloisters,
And if you don't care for tapestries
We'll go to Zabar's and look at cheese
And if you don't like curds and whey
Papa's gonna take you to the Hard Rock Cafe
And if that rock isn't really and truly hard
Papa's gonna take you over to Juilliard
And if they won't play Paganini for ya
Papa's gonna take you to the Waldorf Astoria,
And if you don't care for candelabra,
Papa's gonna take you to the Metropolitan Opera,
And if you don't like "La Traviata"
As much as a $200 ticket oughta
And the soprano doesn't hang out on the fermata
And the lobby's too full of yadayadayada
We'll go to Holy Trinity for a Bach cantata
And if the music is too serene
We'll stop in at Picholine
And if the poached perch pate pales
Papa's gonna take you to Bloomingdale's,
And if Bloomingdale's doesn't quite bloom
Papa's gonna take you to Grant's Tomb,
And if Grant's Tomb fills you with gloom
Papa's gonna take you to the Rainbow Room
And if the Rainbow makes you blue
Papa's gonna take you to the Central Park Zoo
And if those polar bears submerge
Papa's gonna take you to Trinity Church
And if the vespers don't stand a prayer
And we don't even know what we're praying for
We'll tiptoe out and head for the door
Feeling tired and covered with dust
And our credit cards have all gone bust
Then we may as well cause we know we must
Pack our bags and head back home
Back to the place where the buffalo roam,
Back where the houses are never locked
And people head to bed about nine o'clock
Where there is no subway, no A line or B line,
Just a lonesome highway that heads for the treeline,
Where there's no Zabar's and no Balduccis,
Selling thirty-five different kinds of blue cheese,

We got no Lincoln Center, no Times Square,
Got no salons to do our hair,
No haughty models walking down Fifth Avenue,
Just folks who say "It was real nice havin you"

We'll settle down and work real hard
And pay off the debt on our credit card,
Pay the bill every month
For the fun we had in New York onth.
We're in debt and there's a recession.
Our American Express has lost its expression.
We've been deVisaed and unMastered,
All because of you, you beautiful child.
We'll stay home and save our dough,
And sit around with the radio
In our pajamas and nightgown
But you'll still be the sweetest little baby around.

Meryl, Amanda, Kelda, Chrissie, Monika, Katherine, Fabienne, Paul, Sophia, Sason, Sel--

Thank you SO much!!

I must say, though, April 19 is not what it used to be--

Oklahoma City! Waco! The death of Paolo Veronese in 1588 (who knew)???!!

Yike!

That's a lot on my head--

I promise, though, I won't become a Christian Militia Tea-Bagger, I swear!

Can You Have a Happy Birthday on April 19?
By STANLEY FISH

On the little block in Providence, R.I., where I grew up, three of us kids celebrated our birthdays on April 19. I thought that was pretty remarkable; April 19 must be pretty special, I concluded. Many years later I feel the same way, but for different reasons.

This evening MSNBC is airing “The McVeigh Tapes: Confessions of an American Terrorist,” for it was 15 years ago to the day that Timothy McVeigh blew up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people. McVeigh was motivated in part by what had happened on another April 19. On that day in 1993, David Koresh and 75 of his Branch Davidians, a radical Christian sect, were killed when the F.B.I. stormed their compound in Waco, Tex.

To be sure, other events of note occurred on April 19, some good, some bad — the beginning of the Revolutionary War in 1775, Lincoln’s blockade of Confederate ports in 1861, Captain Cook’s sighting of Australia in 1770, the destruction of Toronto by fire in 1904, the abandonment of the gold standard in 1933, the Warsaw Ghetto revolt in 1943, the marriage of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956, the sentencing of Charles Manson in 1971, the installation as Pope Benedict XVI of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in 2005 (good or bad; hard to tell), the Broadway opening of my favorite musical, “Carousel” (1945), the birthdays of Ashley Judd (1968), Murray Perahia (1947), Dudley Moore (1935), Jayne Mansfield (1933), Eliot Ness (1903), and the deaths of C.S. Pierce (1914), Charles Darwin (1882), Benjamin Disraeli (1881), Lord Byron (1824) and Paolo Veronese (1588).

But the significance of these and other April 19’s has been overshadowed for some time by the Waco-Oklahoma connection, which has taken on a life of its own, a life that grows and spawns in the full flowering of the Internet (in 1995, there were only 16 million Internet users throughout the world).

For those who fear government and hold fiercely to the motto of New Hampshire — “Live Free or Die” — April 19 is both a holy and an unholy day; unholy because it marks the naked exercise of state power (at least in the case of Waco and before that of Ruby Ridge), and holy because it serves as a rallying cry for those who wish to “take back” their country from the socialists, communists and one-worlders who, they believe, have hijacked it. Blogger Eric Boehlert declares on Mediamatters.org that “April 19th remains an almost mythical date among dedicated government haters.”

For the government, April 19 is a day to worry about. When F.B.I. agents arrested nine members of the Christian militia known as the Hutaree in late March, they acted because of information indicating that the group was planning an attack on police officers sometime in April. The betting is that the date they had in mind was April 19.

There is no doubt at all about the date of the Second Amendment march in Washington: April 19, today. Organizer [b]Skip Coryell[/b] has said that he “had no idea the [Oklahoma] bombing was that date” (he must be the only politically aware person in the country who can say that), despite the fact that McVeigh was self-identified as a fierce proponent of gun rights. His disavowal of any connection between his event and the passions informing McVeigh’s act is undercut by his words: “As long as our elected officials believe we will rise up and overthrow them under certain conditions, then they will not allow those conditions to occur; their jobs and their very lives depend on it.”

There is not much, if any, distance between statements like this and the incendiary language Bill Clinton warned against when he spoke at a forum on Friday, language that demonizes the government, threatens insurrection or succession, preaches the necessity and inevitability of violence, issues death threats, calls for opposing politicians to be “taken out,” compares the passage of a compromised, watered-down health bill to Armageddon and invokes the name of Jesus as a justification for all the above. “The words we use really do matter,” Clinton insisted, especially, he added, in the context of the Internet’s “vast echo chamber,” which transports them “across space [where] they fall on the serious and the delirious alike … on the connected and the unhinged alike.”

The question is, in which category — the serious and the connected or the delirious and the unhinged — do members of the Tea Party belong? Clinton tried to split the difference, on the one hand affirming the right, and indeed the duty, of those who disagree with government policies to speak out strongly, on the other warning against the consequences of crossing “the basic line dividing criticism from violence or its advocacy.” (By the very examples he cites that line has long since been crossed.) He makes the same point in an op-ed in today’s Times.

But some in the Tea Party are not so reluctant to claim the April 19 heritage of violence. Blogger Mike Vanderboegh urges his readers to break the windows of every Democratic Party headquarters in the country (he cites John Locke as a justifying authority) and predicts that if he and his colleagues withdraw from the system, and “refuse to pay the fines” (for I.R.S. violations) and “refuse arrest,” the result will be “a thousand little Wacos.”

It is enough to make you understand why Globalgrind.com would have a headline declaring, “Why You Should be Afraid of April 19th.” The date has become a magnet for crazies; it is a toxic date. It almost makes me want to go to court and have my birthday legally changed.

Richard Clarke, former cyberterror guru, had some insightful things to say about this day on Fresh Air, the NPR show, today:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=13

His point was that extreme right wing would-be terrorists are gaining more credence because they are now egged on and supported by legitimate government representatives, even Congressional ones! He is surprised that an act of Cyberterrorism hasn't happened yet and expects it at any time.

But, apart from that, hope your birthday's rilly special!!

He, he. It's John in the whispering gallery in GCT.
He gave Monika and me a private tour of Grand Central when we visited last January. I loved that. And the whispering gallery was totally cool! Through all the noises going on there we could hear John clear as day as we stood in the opposite corner. It's in the form of the ceiling and in the special tiling. Very cool effect indeed.

We learned so much about CGT on that tour and saw stuff you normally overlook when you go alone as a tourist. Thank you again, John!

Thank you, Chuck--can you imagine, when that photograph was taken, I thought my hair was long then--

Yes, the Four Seasons puts a candle in/on top--and the spun sugar was slightly warm--and much tastier than the usual 'circus' pink stuff ('cotton candy')--it's not 'on the menu', but if you tell them before hand a member of the party is having a birthday, well--there it is, just like Sia's wig!
