"What Is It?" For May 2009 ***ANSWER POSTED!! ***
« on: May 07, 2009, 01:07:21 am »
This item is about 11 inches long and is at least 120 years old - probably MUCH older than that.

What do you think it is? ???

I will post the answer in approximately one week. Those guessing correctly will win a lamb from Jack and Ennis!

Everyone else will win a consolation prize which will be revealed at the end of the game. ;)

I can't tell you what I think it is because as per normal I am clueless. I am going to go and search out some grey matter and if I find any, I will be back to vote !!! :)
Well I might vote anyway if you promise the consollation prize is a goodie.

It won't be a lamb though! ;)

My gut is telling me it's a gun powder tester, but I don't know why, nor do I know why you would need to test gun powder.

I guess to see if it hasn't gone "bad", like old firecrackers can, and become duds.

It seems to be resting on a stand, which would indicate it may not have been hand held. It has what appears to be a circular saw device, and a firing pin.Well still clueless, it should be a gun for shooting attached to a saw for butchering shot prey, device thingymajig. That does not appear to be one of the options though, curious.
I vote for gunpowder tester, the pin fires and causes the saw to spin  round, which then causes sparks,a bit like a flint and if it all goes  BOOM !!  I guess the gunpowder is not wet.
It is on a stand so you can pull the trigger and run like hell.
Yes I know, time to go off with the nice little men in white coats again. I need to get a job, I'm really not fit to be left to my own devices for so much of the day. !!

Hah, just thought, it casts a whole new slant on the, "gun's goin off" of the S.S.

That is very clever Fiona! I wish I had thought of that. I could have listed it as an option in the poll Thinking up all the wrong answers is probably the most difficult challenge when creating one of these games. :)

I will say its the device for lighting fires.  Looks like it holds a flint and spins a wheel against it to throw a spark??

If no, it should be.    ;)    ;)

Well, Ive gone for early flare gun.....cause you put it in the middle of all the wrong answers.

Someone else has voted for that too, but I cant see who. Whoever it is, should let Davd know just in case its a winner, but, now Ive voted for it, your chances just blew out to 100-1.

Fiona......I think the stand is under it so it sits up as a display. I didn't think it would be with it originally.
But the again, what the bloody hell do I know.

I voted for "device for lighting fires." You poke the barrel end into the kindling, pull the trigger, which turns the wheel, which creates a spark, which starts a fire.  Having said all that, however, I'm honestly not exactly sure what the bloody hell it is. I'm pretty confident it's not a rapid fire gun, or a flame thrower, or anything to do with animal/bird shooting, because I'm guessing such a firearm would require a long barrel. So I'll stick with "device for lighting fires."  :)

Device for lighting fires.

I have no idea though what the saw-like wheel is for. But I know that lighters were invented before matches, and that they looked pretty strange back then. I even believe to remember that they had a gun like form (not sure about the last part).
Anyway, that's my answer and I stick with it!

Hmm fickle woman of indecision that I am, I feel myself being tempted by the erudite answers of my colleagues, that it may be a device for lighting fires.
Damn I hate being wrong, I am such a poor looser.I will console myself, with the fact that David, gentleman that he is, will have arranged a simply splendorous consollation prize !

Now hurry up everyone else, my patience is wearing thin. ;D

Okay, it is time for the answer.

Two people will be winning a REAL lamb from Ennis and Jack, and those two people are -

***********************

********************************

FIONA

and

CHUCK

Here is a description of the gun powder testing device -

Because gunpowder varied in explosive power, gunsmiths needed devices to test particular batches. By the 1500's, elaborate powder testers were available. This one resembles contemporary military pistols and may have belonged to a military gunsmith. Pulling the trigger ignited a measured amount of powder in the tube atop the tester, turning and locking a spring-loaded, numbered wheel. The number at which the wheel stopped indicated the powder's strength. The development of self-contained cartridges during the 1800's made powder testers obsolete.

The rest of you will receive a toy version of the lambs as a consolation prize!

So congratulations to Fiona and Chuck! And thanks to everyone for playing! :D

Let me put your mind at rest, I have, no expense spared prepared a home of sumptuous delights for Larry the lamb. I have thrown away all the mint sauce and Annie has been trained, well that might be an exaggeration, she has been shown the centuries old art of sheep herding. Now it's early days but I have the feeling this has all the signs of a match made in heaven.
I will of course keep you fully updated of all pertinant developments. :)

I am absolutely delighted with my little toy lambkin! He's soooo cute! And as I live in an apartment, he's a lot more practical than a real, live baa-lamb. There's not a lot of grass up here, for a real sheep to eat! Thank you, David.  :D

Well I am pleased to report, Larry arrived safe and sound.
Annie has not been that successful with the swimming lessons, but Matt is over the moon. He has realised that as long as the gestapo, sorry association don't get wind of it, Larry will make a fine substitute lawn mower,(that's why he is at the gifted school !!) one job less for Matt. One job more for Nigel who is numero uno pooper scooper. !!! ;D

Uh oh! And I hear those lambs go poopy doopy a LOT!

You better get one of those super DUPER pooper scoopers! ;) ;)

Well, what a surprise....Fiona you finally did it.....congratulations to you and Chucky

And thank you David for the great quiz, and for my toy fluffy lamb, which I will just have to put in a box for now until I move house.

Love these games David, so hope theres another one soon. Last thing I thought it would be a gunpowder tester.

And Chucky............DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.
Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect.

It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfection
