Villagers discover 'extinct' leopard

By Andrew Buncombe, Asia Correspondent  |  Friday, 24 July 2009

Conservationists in Bangladesh are celebrating after remote tribespeople discovered a rare and threatened leopard that was believed to have been extinct in the country for almost 20 years.

Villagers in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in south-east Bangladesh captured the clouded leopard cub after they disturbed it, its sibling and their mother eating a dead monkey in the jungle. The others escaped, but the villagers captured the three-month-old and put it in a cage. It is understood the tribespeople planned to sell the animal but, after news of the discovery spread, conservationists persuaded them to release the leopard back into the wild. They did so yesterday.

The discovery of the clouded leopard gave renewed hope to conservationists

"We are delighted. For many years now, we had thought this animal was gone or was going," said Professor Anwarul Islam, head of the Wildlife Trust of Bangladesh. "It's good to know that they are still there and that they are breeding."

The clouded leopard, which famously has large dark patterns on its coat, is considered vulnerable across all of south-east Asia, with loss of habitat through deforestation and the Chinese trade in rare animal parts being blamed for the decline.

Listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, there are an estimated 100,000 living worldwide. Reports suggest that the last sighting of the shy and nocturnal animal in Bangladesh was in 1992.

Mr Islam said the villagers in an area of south-east Bangladesh bordering Burma and the north-east Indian state of Mizoram, had stumbled on the family of animals three weeks ago. They took the cub to their village, where it was fed on chicken and milk. The villagers were anxious about releasing the animal as they feared it would struggle to survive in the wild without its mother.

But Mr Islam said the fact that the leopard had a healthy appetite was a good sign. "Most wild animals do not like to eat in captivity but this cub was eating chickens," he said. "The villagers also tried to feed it milk but apparently he preferred the meat."

Environmentalists have long been on the losing side of a battle in Bangladesh, a desperately poor country where conservation has seldom seemed a priority.

In recent years, however, awareness has grown and organisations such as the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) have campaigned for the enforcement of orders by the country's courts on issues such as forest protection.

Clouded leopards are notoriously difficult to breed in captivity. There is a breeding programme under way involving zoos in Thailand and the US, and three baby leopards were recently born at the Nashville Zoo.

Christine Breitenmoser-Würsten, a Swiss specialist on large cats who works with the World Conservation Union, said the threat to the clouded leopard varied from location to location. In Burma and southern China local people still hunted the cats for food while elsewhere, pelt-hunters and destruction of habitat represented the biggest danger. Of the discovery of the cub in Bangladesh, she said: "It's very exciting – it's fascinating. I was thrilled when I heard about it."

Artists Erect Giant Pink Bunny on Mountain

An enormous pink bunny has been erected on an Italian mountainside where it will stay for the next 20 years.

The 200-foot-long toy rabbit lies on the side of the 5,000 foot high Colletto Fava mountain in northern Italy's Piedmont region.

Viennese art group Gelatin designed the giant soft toy and say it was "knitted by dozens of grannies out of pink wool".

Group member Wolfgang Gantner said: "It's supposed to make you feel small, like Gulliver. You walk around it and you can't help but smile."

And Gelatin members say the bunny is not just for walking around - they are expecting hikers to climb its 20 foot sides and relax on its belly.

The giant rabbit is expected to remain on the mountain side until 2025.

Horse survives after jumping into oncoming car in Israel

Amy Mathieson, H&H news writer
5 August, 2009

A horse in Israel has escaped with minor injuries after jumping into a moving car.

A tourist captured video footage of three horses galloping down a main road in the Galilee region of northern Israel.

The horses — one of which appears to be a foal — ran into the path of an oncoming car.

The two smaller horses swerved to avoid the vehicle, but the third — a coloured larger horse bringing up the rear — made the last minute decision to jump over it.

The horse leaped straight at the car putting his front legs through the windshield before jumping out and over the roof.

Amazingly, according to local reports, both the horse and the occupants of the car only suffered minor cuts and bruises.

Pelican Swallows Cell Phone

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — Can you hear me now? A pelican at the Tautphaus Park Zoo took something other than food in his bill when a cell phone that had been dropped in a pool at the exhibit made its way down the hatch. The flock in the exhibit were playing with the phone Monday until one of the birds swallowed it. For three hours, zookeepers couldn't figure out which bird did it until the culprit coughed up the goods.

"Luckily, the bird regurgitated it so it wouldn't harm him," zoo superintendent Bill Gersonde said. "We just need folks to be really cautious when they're in the zoo and remember that they're guests in the animals' homes and they need to keep their personal belongings as close to them as possible."

Officials haven't figured out who owns the phone.

Well, if he hadn't puked it up he would have pooped it out sooner or later! What goes in must come out! But I'm not sure if I'd want my cellphone back once it fell out of a pellican's ass.

I don't think I'd want it back after it was puked back up either. :P

Wayward Wallaby Back Home Again in Indiana
« Reply #13 on: August 12, 2009, 01:06:58 am »
Awwww!!! :-*

Wayward wallaby back home again in Indiana

Gaston - A wayward wallaby is back home in eastern Indiana after two months on the run, er, hop.

The missing kangaroo-like marsupial, named Sidney, was captured Monday night near her owner's home in Gaston, about 10 miles northwest of Muncie.

Owner Carolyn Buck says the family had set up a pen and set food inside to attract the mammal. Her son-in-law, who lives nearby, sneaked out a window to shut Sidney in because the doors were visible from the trap.

Buck received phone calls and messages from people who claimed to have seen the wallaby as far as 25 miles away.

Buck doesn't think Sidney got too far away, however. The family spotted her several times at a nearby stream.

Gibson, World's Tallest Dog, Dies

GRASS VALLEY, Calif. (Aug. 12) - Gibson, the California dog dubbed the tallest in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records, has died after a battle with bone cancer.

The 7-year-old harlequin Great Dane from Grass Valley measured 7 feet, 1 inch when standing on its hinds legs.

He was diagnosed with the disease in April and had his front right leg amputated to prevent its spread. He also underwent chemotherapy as a precaution.

Gibson's owner, Sandy Hall, learned last week the cancer had spread to his lungs and spine and that no treatment that could save him. Hall decided to euthanize Gibson on Friday.

Gibson appeared on "The Tonight Show," "The Oprah Show" and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," and on Japanese television in 2006 after being named the world's tallest dog.

Motola the Elephant, Injured by a Landmine Gets an Artificial Leg
« Reply #16 on: August 16, 2009, 03:29:06 am »
Yay for Motola!!!! I'm so glad they finally took care of her! :D

You can see a picture of the elephant by clicking on the link at the bottom of this post.

Thai Elephant Fitted With Artificial Leg

LAMPANG, Thailand (Aug. 15) - Motola, a female elephant who stepped on a land mine 10 years ago and endured painful operations, was fitted Saturday in Thailand for a permanent artificial leg.

The 48-year-old pachyderm became a symbol of the plight of today's elephants, and her injury sparked international sympathy and donations.

Experts were making a cast of her injured left front leg for a plastic prosthetic limb which will be attached later Saturday.

"I do hope she will accept the new leg. It would be wonderful to see Motola and Baby Mosha walking together side-by-side," said Soraida Salwala, secretary general of the Friends of the Asian Elephant, a non-governmental group.

Mosha, also a land mine victim, became the world's first elephant with an artificial leg, attached in 2007. Soraida said Mosha, now a 3-year-old, is faring well and has outgrown three of her prosthetic devices.

Both elephants have been cared for at the Elephant Hospital, set up by Soraida's group in 1993. The world's first such facility, the hospital has treated thousands of elephants for ailments ranging from eye infection to gunshot wounds.

Motola was injured in 1999 while working at a logging camp along the Myanmar-Thailand border, a region peppered with land mines after half a century of insurgency. Her mangled foot was amputated, and she hobbled on three feet until fitted with a temporary, canvas shoe-like device two years later.

Motola's initial operation used enough anesthetic to floor 70 people — a record noted in the 2000 Guinness Book of World Records.

"It has been 10 years now, but in all these long years Motola enjoyed a happy life, walking out of her shelter for a sun bath," Soraida said.

Soraida said Motola has otherwise been in fine health, with her once bony frame now weighing more than 3 tons.

The artificial leg has been constructed by the Prostheses Foundation, which also makes cheap but effective artificial limbs for human amputees.

A number of elephants have had land mine injuries. But that is only one of many problems facing the domesticated giant, whose numbers have dropped from 13,400 in 1950 to today's estimated 2,500. The number of wild elephants has also dropped dramatically.

Traditionally the truck, taxi and logging worker of Thailand, the elephant has lost most of its jobs to modernization. One saving grace has been the tourism industry, which employs large numbers for elephant trekking and other activities.

Hedgehogs Adopted by Hairbrush
« Reply #20 on: August 21, 2009, 01:08:57 pm »
Orphaned hedgehogs adopt cleaning brush as their mother

Four tiny orpahned hedgehogs are snuggling up to the bristles of a cleaning brush - because they think it's their mother.

The four-inch-long creatures are being hand-reared by staff at the New Forest Otter, Owl and Wildlife Park in Ashurst, Hants.

Workers say Mary, Mungo, Midge and Slappy get comfort from playing with the centre's cleaning brush and enjoy rubbing against it.

The smells on the brush, which is used to sweep a yard, remind the hedgehogs of their natural habitat while the texture reminds them of their mother.

Manager John Crooks, 41, said: "They are a bit like human babies - they need activities to keep them busy.

"Because they have very poor eyesight you have to appeal to their sense of smell and touch by giving them different scents and textures."

"They like natural scents and have enjoyed playing with our cleaning brushes, soil, leaves, flower pots and the like."

"They particularly seem to enjoy rubbing against the brush."

"It may sound odd but I imagine the bristles feel a bit like their mum."

He added: "Three of the hedgehogs came to us because their mum was sadly crushed by a council palette truck at one of their depots.

"They are only a couple of weeks old."

"The fourth one is a little bit older and was found wandering around a back garden in the middle of the day."

"The home owner left it alone for a while to see if it would find its mum but after a few hours it was still by itself so she brought it in to us."

The hedgehogs will be fed until they are full-sized and then they will be released back into the wild.

John said: "We are feeding them milk powder mixed with kitten food - but they don't like fish flavour - they prefer nice meaty chunks."

"When they get older they will move onto proper cat food and will occasionally be given slugs and snails as a treat."

"There has been a real surge in slugs this year because of the wet weather so hopefully that will mean a good year for hedgehogs too."

"I would urge people not to kill garden slugs with pellets because the poison will be passed on to hedgehogs and a build-up of poison could be fatal."

"If the weather is good they could be released in a month or so, otherwise we will feed them over the winter so they do not hibernate and then relase them in spring."

He added: "They are quite a handful and each has their own character."

"One is quite snappy and another fairly sleepy."

There's that old wives tale about owners looking like their dogs, but can you and your dog share more than just looks?

In the video above, one Kentucky woman tries to convince us that her dog Opie has an opinion on our current president. This got us wondering -- should pets become unsuspecting campaigners?

We have a feeling Bo Obama would have something to say about this.

David, the dog is supposedly anti-Obama.  A woman was offering her dog treats -- little pieces of carrot, I think -- saying, "Here's a treat from Mom," after which the dog took it out of her hand.  Then she offered another treat, saying, "Here's a treat from Dad," and again the dog took it.  When she said, "Here's one from Barack Obama, the dog wouldn't take it, turning his head away.  She did it a couple of times, and each time she offered a treat and said it from Obama, the dog wouldn't take it until she said it was from someone else.

I think someone was in the background doing hand signals or something so the dog wouldn't take the treat if she said it was coming from Obama.

I rather think she trained her dog not to take a treat when she says a specific word (=stop-word). It's not that hard*. My dog doesn't eat a treat laying in front of him when I say "No" (pretty creative, eh? ;)).
For a dog it doesn't make a difference whether the stop-word is "No" or "Barack Obama" or "spaceship".

Watch the video again. The phase of "you're not allowed to take a treat" begins with "Barack Obama" and ends with "Okay". On hearing OK, the dog already turns around its head again and is ready to take the next treat (before she says it's from mom). "Brack Obama" is the stop-word and "Okay" is the commando for "well done, this excercise is over", meaning he's allowed to take the treats again.

*But the performance is very well done. My dog is hanging over the treat, drooling like mad and ready to explode evey second, lol. At least I always fear he might explode (or implode) if I don't redeem him within the next few seconds .

Moose tranquilized in Erie
Animal likely companion or sister of Broomfield moose

Wildlife officers, with the help of Erie police and town officials, tranquilized a moose Wednesday after it was seen roaming near County Line Road 1 and Erie Parkway.

Residents spotted the female moose early in historic downtown and later near Coal Creek open space. They called police, and Colorado Division of Wildlife officials found the roughly 1-year-old moose before noon.

She retreated to Coal Creek, east of a trail between Erie Commons and Grandview neighborhoods, according to Town of Erie spokesman Fred Diehl. The Erie Department of Public Works used a backhoe to clear a section of the native grasses and shrubs so crews could get to the moose and shoot her with a tranquilizer, Diehl said.

Wildlife officers and town officials placed the moose in a stretcher and lifted her onto a large bucket attached to the backhoe to move her away from the creek, Diehl said.

The moose was then transported to a trailer and taken away, he said.

Officers will relocate the 500-pound moose to the high country, west of the Indian Peaks mountains, said Division of Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill.

"Everything went really well," she said. "She's in good shape now." Wednesday's moose is believed to be one of two moose spotted several weeks ago near Niwot, Churchill said. One of those moose made her way to Broomfield, where she was tranquilized and relocated after drawing a crowd of onlookers. Churchill said the moose in Erie likely was her companion or sister.

"They seemed to be together and then separated," she said.

The division decided to tranquilize and relocate the moose on Wednesday "based on our experience with her sister," who ended up getting too close to people, Churchill said.

"We wanted to move her now and get her out, rather than end up with a situation where she's a danger to herself or people," Churchill said.

Awww! Poor baby! I'm glad he finally got out!

Bear Gets Stuck in Colorado Skate Park

One black bear thought it would be gnarly to sneak onto a sunken skatepark in the resort town of Snowmass, Colo. on Monday. Unfortunately, we don't think he thought he'd be spending the night there.

The Daily Mail reports that on Tuesday morning, when the bear was discovered, workers from the Parks and Recreation Department had to lower a ladder down into one of the skate bowls in order to save the stuck bear. The poor guy couldn't get out because of the bowl's smooth sides and curved edges, the Daily Mail continues.

We hope this giant shredder learned his lesson -- and next time brings his board with him!

Chanel, World's Oldest Dog, Dies at 21

(Aug. 31) - Chanel, a white dachshund who held the Guinness world record for oldest dog, died Friday, People Pets reported.

Chanel celebrated her 21st birthday in May, according to Guinness. That's 147 years old in human years.

Earlier this year, the dog's owners, Karl and Denice Shaughnessy of Port Jefferson Station, N.Y., said Chanel was still feisty and in good health despite her advanced age. She did, however, wear sunglasses for her cataracts.

"While I go to work, she sleeps all day until I come home. And then when I get home she is like a ball of fire," Denice had told Britain's Daily Telegraph.

The coupled adopted the dog in 1988, and said that treats from dog food company Dogswell contributed to Chanel's longevity, People Pets reported.

"We were saddened to learn of Chanel's passing on Friday evening," Marco Giannini, founder and chief executive officer of Dogswell, told People Pets in a statement. "Our team at Dogswell had built a great bond with Chanel, as well as her owners, who show great love and care for their pets."
