Pelican Swallows Cell Phone

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — Can you hear me now? A pelican at the Tautphaus Park Zoo took something other than food in his bill when a cell phone that had been dropped in a pool at the exhibit made its way down the hatch. The flock in the exhibit were playing with the phone Monday until one of the birds swallowed it. For three hours, zookeepers couldn't figure out which bird did it until the culprit coughed up the goods.

"Luckily, the bird regurgitated it so it wouldn't harm him," zoo superintendent Bill Gersonde said. "We just need folks to be really cautious when they're in the zoo and remember that they're guests in the animals' homes and they need to keep their personal belongings as close to them as possible."

Officials haven't figured out who owns the phone.

Well, if he hadn't puked it up he would have pooped it out sooner or later! What goes in must come out! But I'm not sure if I'd want my cellphone back once it fell out of a pellican's ass.

I don't think I'd want it back after it was puked back up either. :P

Cute story Laura! :D

Wayward Wallaby Back Home Again in Indiana
« Reply #13 on: August 12, 2009, 01:06:58 am »
Awwww!!! :-*

Wayward wallaby back home again in Indiana

Gaston - A wayward wallaby is back home in eastern Indiana after two months on the run, er, hop.

The missing kangaroo-like marsupial, named Sidney, was captured Monday night near her owner's home in Gaston, about 10 miles northwest of Muncie.

Owner Carolyn Buck says the family had set up a pen and set food inside to attract the mammal. Her son-in-law, who lives nearby, sneaked out a window to shut Sidney in because the doors were visible from the trap.

Buck received phone calls and messages from people who claimed to have seen the wallaby as far as 25 miles away.

Buck doesn't think Sidney got too far away, however. The family spotted her several times at a nearby stream.

Gibson, World's Tallest Dog, Dies

GRASS VALLEY, Calif. (Aug. 12) - Gibson, the California dog dubbed the tallest in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records, has died after a battle with bone cancer.

The 7-year-old harlequin Great Dane from Grass Valley measured 7 feet, 1 inch when standing on its hinds legs.

He was diagnosed with the disease in April and had his front right leg amputated to prevent its spread. He also underwent chemotherapy as a precaution.

Gibson's owner, Sandy Hall, learned last week the cancer had spread to his lungs and spine and that no treatment that could save him. Hall decided to euthanize Gibson on Friday.

Gibson appeared on "The Tonight Show," "The Oprah Show" and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," and on Japanese television in 2006 after being named the world's tallest dog.

INDIANAPOLIS -- There's a big delivery on the way at the Indianapolis Zoo.

Zoo officials said a white rhino named Gloria is pregnant and is expected to give birth later this year.

The baby is expected to weigh about 100 pounds when it's born -- and gain about 30 pounds a week.

Gloria and the baby are expected to be on exhibit next spring.

Motola the Elephant, Injured by a Landmine Gets an Artificial Leg
« Reply #16 on: August 16, 2009, 03:29:06 am »
Yay for Motola!!!! I'm so glad they finally took care of her! :D

You can see a picture of the elephant by clicking on the link at the bottom of this post.

Thai Elephant Fitted With Artificial Leg

LAMPANG, Thailand (Aug. 15) - Motola, a female elephant who stepped on a land mine 10 years ago and endured painful operations, was fitted Saturday in Thailand for a permanent artificial leg.

The 48-year-old pachyderm became a symbol of the plight of today's elephants, and her injury sparked international sympathy and donations.

Experts were making a cast of her injured left front leg for a plastic prosthetic limb which will be attached later Saturday.

"I do hope she will accept the new leg. It would be wonderful to see Motola and Baby Mosha walking together side-by-side," said Soraida Salwala, secretary general of the Friends of the Asian Elephant, a non-governmental group.

Mosha, also a land mine victim, became the world's first elephant with an artificial leg, attached in 2007. Soraida said Mosha, now a 3-year-old, is faring well and has outgrown three of her prosthetic devices.

Both elephants have been cared for at the Elephant Hospital, set up by Soraida's group in 1993. The world's first such facility, the hospital has treated thousands of elephants for ailments ranging from eye infection to gunshot wounds.

Motola was injured in 1999 while working at a logging camp along the Myanmar-Thailand border, a region peppered with land mines after half a century of insurgency. Her mangled foot was amputated, and she hobbled on three feet until fitted with a temporary, canvas shoe-like device two years later.

Motola's initial operation used enough anesthetic to floor 70 people — a record noted in the 2000 Guinness Book of World Records.

"It has been 10 years now, but in all these long years Motola enjoyed a happy life, walking out of her shelter for a sun bath," Soraida said.

Soraida said Motola has otherwise been in fine health, with her once bony frame now weighing more than 3 tons.

The artificial leg has been constructed by the Prostheses Foundation, which also makes cheap but effective artificial limbs for human amputees.

A number of elephants have had land mine injuries. But that is only one of many problems facing the domesticated giant, whose numbers have dropped from 13,400 in 1950 to today's estimated 2,500. The number of wild elephants has also dropped dramatically.

Traditionally the truck, taxi and logging worker of Thailand, the elephant has lost most of its jobs to modernization. One saving grace has been the tourism industry, which employs large numbers for elephant trekking and other activities.
