Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt the new Jake Gyllenhaal?
« on: July 31, 2009, 10:46:22 am »
I mean, he's nowhere near as hot as Jake, but he's popping up so often these days, has he replaced Jake as the darling of the indie-film set?  ???

I didn't know we needed a new Jake Gyllenhaal.

What's wrong with the old one?

Good question. Some time before Jarhead?

If anything, Joseph is the new Heath.  (Not that there could truly be another Heath.)

I saw the title of this thread and before I read any posts the above quote is *exactly* what I was thinking.

JGL looks very alike Heath in some images.

The weird thing is they don't look alike at all (IMO) in 10 Things I Hate About You.

I like JGL a lot, and I think acting-wise he's got the courageous/quirky/outside-the-box thing going that makes him quite similar to Heath too - I'm looking very much forward to 500 Days of Summer - whenever that one reaches my shores....

Yes, but was Heath the indie darling that Jake was--or seemed to be?  ???

If you're worried about Joseph taking parts that would have otherwise gone to Jake, I don't really think it would work that way.  They're a few years apart in age, different physical types, at different stages in their careers, etc.

He was very cute in "10 Things I Hate About You" but then I looked at his picture over on Wikipedia, and God! :P

What did he do to himself? He's really changed. And NO I don't think he'll ever replace Jake. Huh-uh. :(

No, I'm not worried about him taking roles away from Jake. Time marches on. I just have the impression that critics are swooning over him in indie flicks the way they used to swoon over Jake. Plus he seems to be all over the indie flicks these days, too. Hence the question: Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt the "new" Jake Gyllenhaal?

This led me to go read about JGL on Wikipedia, and Wiki quote http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Joseph_Gordon-Levitt

I saw 500 Days of Summer on Sunday, and as I watched I kept bemoaning the fact that JGL and Heath would never have a chance to play brothers in a movie. They would be so perfect, wouldn't they?

(Same with Isla Fisher and Amy Adams -- they could play sisters -- but they still have a chance.)

If you're worried about Joseph taking parts that would have otherwise gone to Jake, I don't really think it would work that way.  They're a few years apart in age, different physical types, at different stages in their careers, etc.

They're two months apart in age! I know, it surprises me, too.

Heath, for the record, would be less than two years older than JGL.  :-\

I think I remember those.  Doesn't he play an insecure little suck-up?

I want to see 500 Days of Summer very much.  (More than Taking Woodstock, not that I should be comparing.)  JGL and Zooey Deschanel are both so quirky.  I love them both.

I always think it's cool when you spot a movie star in an early role from the past, before they became famous and all.  It's neat to see their formative work.  And it proves that adage, "overnight success takes around 15 years".

My internet went down and I meant to include this in my last post -

Actually, wasn't he a kid D.J. couldn't stand?

They had a real eye for talent on that show.  John Goodman, of course.  He hadn't done anything major yet when he started.  George Clooney, Laurie Metcalf, Estelle Parsons, Shelley Winters, Martin Mull, Fred Willard, Ned Beatty, Sally Kirkland, Tim Curry.

this thread made me think of what Jake once said about stardom

"First, it's 'Who is Jake Gyllenhaal?,' then it's 'Get me Jake Gyllenhaal,' then 'Get me someone who looks like Jake Gyllenhaal,' and then 'Who is Jake Gyllenhaal?'...Right now, I'm between 'Who is Jake Gyllenhaal?' and 'Get me Jake Gyllenhaal.' "

Maybe he has moved on to the "Get me someone who looks like Jake Gyllehaal" stage? :)

That's a very astute statement of Jake's.

Even though he plays a "Jack" in (500) Days of Summer, JGL is definitely a Heath! His face is closed and open at the same time...very intriguing. I just watched the movie yesterday and so today I'm all pensive over destiny vs coincidence. Hmmm, I think it's a combination, just as it happened in the end, when his character found out that a girl he met hung out at the same spot he did, but he had never noticed her because he hadn't been looking.

They certainly did, and in addition, one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much, I'm sure, is that Joss Whedon (Buffy/Serenity/Firefly/etc) was a principal writer.

Another peripheral factoid is that Glenn Quinn, who was Doyle on "Angel" also played Becky's boyfriend on "Roseanne". It was supposed to be a one-shot deal but became a recurring role. Sadly Quinn overdosed on heroin, I believe, after his "Angel" role wasn't working out. I liked his character and hated to see him go. I'm sure HubbyMeno knows more about it than I do.

I never knew that he was in roseanne. I thought he was very good in Angel. I did vagult know Jss Whedon had started there.

John Galecki  too is great. He was Darlene's boyfriend in Roseanne but is now Leonard Hofstadter, in The Big Bandg Theory. He's been in a fair few things, but his comedic timing.. *love*

Sarah Gilbert (Darlne) has also done well for herself. She's been in 24 ER and the Big Bang Theory amongst others. (Did you know that she has 2 kids with her female ? I didn't)

I'm sorry to hear that Glenn Quinn died.  He was very good as the bad boy on Roseanne.

I've always thought it is interesting about sisters Melissa Gilbert and Sara Gilbert - one played sweetness and light on "Little House on the Prairie," and the other so snarly and dark on "Roseanne."

Technically, half-sisters. Same mother, different father.

I remember being surprised when I learned that they are (half)sisters, despite the same last name (duh). But once I knew it, I totally saw it. And I remember being smitten by Melissa Gilbert as a kid, and the same goes for Sara many years later.

I never saw Sara Gilbert in anything else than Roseanne and a few episodes of ER. In the latter, she played some kind of adult Darlene. Same type. Loved her anyway.

Oh, and if Darlene weren't such an exotic name in Germany, we would have named our second daughter Darlene. Hubby and I both love the name :).
