If you're worried about Joseph taking parts that would have otherwise gone to Jake, I don't really think it would work that way.  They're a few years apart in age, different physical types, at different stages in their careers, etc.

No, I'm not worried about him taking roles away from Jake. Time marches on. I just have the impression that critics are swooning over him in indie flicks the way they used to swoon over Jake. Plus he seems to be all over the indie flicks these days, too. Hence the question: Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt the "new" Jake Gyllenhaal?

And NO I don't think he'll ever replace Jake. Huh-uh. :(

Of course nobody can ever replace Jake.  ;)  But see my response to Laura.  :)

I didn't know we needed a new Jake Gyllenhaal.

What's wrong with the old one?

This led me to go read about JGL on Wikipedia, and Wiki quote http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Joseph_Gordon-Levitt

Here's his website

I saw 500 Days of Summer on Sunday, and as I watched I kept bemoaning the fact that JGL and Heath would never have a chance to play brothers in a movie. They would be so perfect, wouldn't they?

(Same with Isla Fisher and Amy Adams -- they could play sisters -- but they still have a chance.)

They're two months apart in age! I know, it surprises me, too.

Heath, for the record, would be less than two years older than JGL.  :-\

I think I remember those.  Doesn't he play an insecure little suck-up?

I want to see 500 Days of Summer very much.  (More than Taking Woodstock, not that I should be comparing.)  JGL and Zooey Deschanel are both so quirky.  I love them both.

I always think it's cool when you spot a movie star in an early role from the past, before they became famous and all.  It's neat to see their formative work.  And it proves that adage, "overnight success takes around 15 years".

My internet went down and I meant to include this in my last post -

Actually, wasn't he a kid D.J. couldn't stand?

They had a real eye for talent on that show.  John Goodman, of course.  He hadn't done anything major yet when he started.  George Clooney, Laurie Metcalf, Estelle Parsons, Shelley Winters, Martin Mull, Fred Willard, Ned Beatty, Sally Kirkland, Tim Curry.

this thread made me think of what Jake once said about stardom

"First, it's 'Who is Jake Gyllenhaal?,' then it's 'Get me Jake Gyllenhaal,' then 'Get me someone who looks like Jake Gyllenhaal,' and then 'Who is Jake Gyllenhaal?'...Right now, I'm between 'Who is Jake Gyllenhaal?' and 'Get me Jake Gyllenhaal.' "

Maybe he has moved on to the "Get me someone who looks like Jake Gyllehaal" stage? :)
