Let the faithful sing her praises on this blessed day!
Why do we consume what we consume?
Why do we believe what we believe?
Why do we accept what we accept?
You have a body, a mind, and a soul.... You have a responsibility.

Let me be the third to join the growing chorus of praise here. Yes, Annie, we wish you all the best, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for introducing us to Ennis and Jack and the mysterious mountain that will ever call them home.

God bless Brokeback...God bless Annie Proulx.

Let me join the chorus -- Brokeback Mountain changed my life and continues to reverberate in so much that I do and create.  The most perfect sentence I ever read: "Ennis and Jack, the dogs, horses and mules, flowed up the trail like dirty water . . ." etc. is pinned to my bulletin board and lives on in my memory. Thank you for your vision and honesty.  And Happy Birthday!!!   Iris.
Ennis and Jack, the dogs, horses and mules, a thousand ewes and their lambs flowed up the trail like dirty water through the timber and out above the tree line into the great flowering meadows and the endless coursing wind.

Some Annie Proulx Quotes:

“I found myself wondering what a gay person in such a masculine-oriented society did -- whether they fled to Denver or toughed it out. I began thinking about homophobia. In fact, the thing that destroyed the relationship between the two characters was their own homophobia.”

"The characters Jack and Ennis are poor ranch kids autochthonous native, born to the soil, part of the place. Their lives are hard in multiple ways. Neither they nor their stories have sentimental qualities. My writing is not sentimental and neither is Ang Lee's film. The Wyoming landscape, like human behavior, is extremely complex, and I think the basic basinand- range topography, the mix of high plains, forested mountains, desert, highways and dirt roads, with all that such varied landscape can mean psychologically, is expressed in both the story and the film. "

“If you are looking for smart judging based on merit, skip the Academy Awards next year and pay attention to the Independent Spirit Awards .”

But I think my favorite Annie quote would be the first to the last word in her Brokeback Mountain short story.  ;)
(To think I hadn't even heard of it before I saw BBM in theatres..)

I just found this out while lurking on davecullen. The address for her agent is:

Annie Proulx
c/o Liz Darhansoff
Darhansoff, Verrill and Feldman
236 W. 26th Street, Suite 802
NYC, NY 10001

It will take a little while to get to her anyway so it won't matter that it is a belated wish.

What wonderful pictures, thank you for posting them.

It occured to me how much she resembles Roberta Maxwell.

Can you tell us from where that shot of Ms. Maxwell comes? She looks rather different there, and younger, than in Brokeback Mountain. I saw a production pic of her in a relatively recent New York stage play, and she looked considerably softer and more glamorous than as Mrs. Twist.
