Rooney Mara cast as Lisbeth Salander
« on: August 18, 2010, 10:01:06 am »
Rooney Mara has been cast as Lisbeth Salander in the US version of Stieg Larsson's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (the movie has already been made in Sweden). I thought this tidbit of news might be of interest to the folks here because Rooney Mara is Kate Mara's sister--Kate, who we all know as Alma, Jr.

This European here would have bet that "Rooney" is a male name, but hey, you live and learn ;D.
I think she doesn't look much like her sister. And she doesn't look the least bit like the Lisbeth I mixed up with my imagination and the pic on the cover of the first book in the German version (of which I guess it's taken from the Swedish movie version).

Something I find interesting about Stieg Larsson's books: they have completely different titles in different languages, with one exception.

First one:
Män som hatar kvinnor in Swedish (= Men who hate women)
Verblendung in German (= Dazzlement)
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in English

Second one:
Flickan som lekte med elden  (=the girl who played with fire)
Verdammnis  (=Perdition)
The Girl Who Played with Fire

Third one:
Luftslottet som sprängdes (=The Castle in the Air/pipedream which got blown up)
Vergebung  (=Absolution)
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest

I've only read the first one so far, but am looking forward to the next two! I liked the first one very much. And who could not fall in love with the character of Lisbeth?

The Rooney family is the family that owns the Pittsburgh Steelers... I know the Mara family is closely tied to the Rooney family (though various family bonds, marriages, etc... I forget the exact details).  I'm sure it's meant as a family name in this case.  It's not at all a common first name here.

I haven´t read any of the books as I seldom read books in that genre.

However, over the last couple of years, whenever I´ve traveled in the US I have encountered people reading novels by Stieg Larsson and every single time I get a powerful urge to lean over and go " hey - did you know he´s a Swedish author? And I´m Swedish! Cool, huh!?"

Relax, I´ve never once really done it.

I´m simply not used to seing Americans read novels by Swedish authors.
Can´t help but to feel a tad excited.

I haven't read any of those books either, Monika.

Don't plan on doing it in the near future either.

But I agree, it is exciting that they are so popular internationally!

Yeah, I noticed that too. In combination with the 70s looks, it's really funny.

This thread is making me nostalgic for the old "Kate, Kate, Kate!" thread: http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php/topic,22491.0.html
 :)

Yeah, the Mara and the Rooney families are something like football "royalty"... it adds an interesting twist of irony to the "boys should watch football" Thanksgiving argument.
 ;D

This is the info about Kate's place in the family, "She is the great-granddaughter of the founder of the New York Giants, Timothy Mara and Art Rooney, founder of the Pittsburgh Steelers. She often sings the national anthem at Giants home games."
