I've never done it, but:

Never ever heard of popcorn balls.
This recipe doesn't exactly make me feel that I missed out on something important in life because of that....  ::)

One question: why do you need 2 tsp of COLD water, when you're pouring it in a saucepan and bringing it to boil???

Cheesy Ghosts

ingredients:
1 can (8 oz.) refrigerated  crescent dinner rolls
1 cup shredded cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, Colby, or Monterey Jack)
Sliced olives and chiles (according to preference)

directions:

1. Heat oven to 375°F. Mist a large baking sheet with cooking spray.

2. On a cutting board, unroll dough and separate into 8 triangles. Cut each in half so you end up with 16 triangles. Mold each into a ghost shape and place on cookie sheet.

3. Bake until slightly puffed and beginning to brown, around 7 minutes. Sprinkle each ghost with 1 Tbsp cheese; add olives or peppers to make mouth and eyes. Bake until cheese melts, about 2 minutes longer.

KITCHEN COUNTER:

Serves 16. Per ghost: 45 calories, 2.5g fat, 90mg sodium, 4g carbs, 2g protein, no cholesterol.

Thanks DarkoBunny. Looks like the secret ingredient to achieve ball status is syrup

Wonder what would happen if you used maple syrup instead?  I'm not sure if the popcorn would stick together but if it worked you'd really have something.

UPDATE

Found several recipes !  Here's a good one, with pecans, at http://bakingsheet.blogspot.com/2005/12/cooking-school-popcorn-balls.html

Personally, I'd leave out the fruit and use more pecans.
