My partner David just showed me his July-August 2006 issue of "The Gay and Lesbian Review" has an article by Patricia Nell Warren - "Real Cowboys, Real Rodeos" that makes several references to BBM. It begins as follows:

THE POLITICAL DUST STORM kicked up by the Oscar-winning film Brokeback Mountain, . . .

You can read it at http://www.glreview.com/issues/13.4/13.4-warren.php

Interestingly, the author states that "In 1983, Jack’s story ends with a beating by gay-bashers at the age of 43" although we do not know what really happened to Jack.

There is also an interesting short sidebar item, “Stemming the Rose”: A Brokeback Mystery" by Blanche Poubelle.  It explores several possible meaning to “Stemming the Rose” and states, "there's a clear consensus among those who have investigated “Stemming the Rose” that Proulx invented the term.  This sidebar item is not on the "The Gay and Lesbian Review" website, but I’ll try to scan and post it when I get a chance.

Uh-oh. I'll bet Blanche Poubelle is going to be hearing from our old friend TJ.

(TJ, for anyone who wasn't here then, was a former BetterMost member who insisted that "stemming the rose" was a classic Western term that meant "goofing off on the job." Nothing else. Those of you who might have been thinking it meant something else, get your head out of the gutter.)

That's a great article, Pete.

It was originally published in Outsports, and the link is here:

I only mention this because it has some nice photos which were not included in the Gay and Lesbian Review.

For anyone reading, Through The Veil of Time, this is the article Ennis was reading when Jack was searching for info on chili cook-offs on the computer.

Nobody on this site, Roux. Unless TJ comes back, of course! (Remember how TJ insisted that "wrang it out" meant "ponder deeply"?)

Yeah, I've been stemming a lot of roses lately, myself.
