Let the ball roll! - UEFA EURO 2012
« on: June 08, 2012, 02:31:03 pm »
It's that time again! Soccer time. The European football/soccer championship begins today. :D

First game Poland : Greece 1:1

I watched (of course I did), and it was a surprisingly eventful game. Mostly, the opening game is an exercise in anxious boredom which ends traditionally 1:0. Noone wants to risk anything and this results in a dull match. Not today though. :)

Two red cards (each on one side), one penalty kick (botched) and a Greek team that seemed clearly inferior at the beginning, but achieved to rip the Polish defense apart a couple of times. Yay!

The two goal scorers:

Lewandowski (Poland) cheers after shooting the 1:0

Salpingidis (Greece) shot the 1:1 and had the 2:1 on his foot when he was fouled by the Polish goalkeeper. Therefore the Greeks got the penatly shot, but didn't score.

In less than an hour, the next game starts (Russia : Czech Republic).
My famliy will be busy for the next three weeks. ;)

One more fun thing from the Poland : Greece game: the referee looked like our dentist! He has not only a resemblence, even his facial expressions, gestures and posture are alike.

This is the scene where Salpingidis (#14) gets a penalty shot and the Polish goalie is sent off the green with a red card.
Hubby's comment: "Dr. A gives Robin Williams a penalty shot."

Hubby thought the Greek scorer looked like Robin Williams from afar.

You got your priorities right! :)

Is it soccer or football in Canada?

Canadian football is similar to American football - but organized soccer has become the sport practiced by more Canadian children than even hockey, 'cause the equipment for playing hockey is so much more expensive than for soccer.

Baseball is probably third in popularity (playing, not watching) though I am constantly surprised at lacrosse's popularity.

Canadian football - probably quite low, behind some winter sports.
2015 - Toronto: Pan Am Games
2015 - Edmonton, Montréal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Winnipeg: Woman's World Cup of Soccer

It's soccer unfortunately.  I'm trying to change that, I insist on calling 'foot'.

I missed today's first match (went to see Cosmopolis) but I'm watching Germany vs Portugal.  Lots of missed opportunities but a very exciting game so far with Germany dominating.  Podolski and Ronaldo are two of my faves of course.  Poor Pepe, missed it by a couple of inches!

That's sooo cool. I'm also quickly checking in during half-time. Cool to think you watch it at the same time, thousands of miles apart. :)

For the records:
Russia beats Czech Republic 4:1 (Friday)
Denmark beats Netherlands 1:0

I didn't find the match too exciting so far, except for Peppe's almost goal at the end of the first half. *phew*

Thanks! :)

I like watching ice-hockey, too. But only live, in the stadium, not so much in front of the telly. I can't follow the puck when watching TV, it's too small and moves too fast. We have a team near us that plays first league and my daughter is a huge fan. She seriously wanted to play ice-hockey and nagged me to no end for almost a year. :P
(she's the one who is already very invested in hand-ball, so no way she'd even have the time for a second sport ::))

Sweden made it into the EURO '12, so you're not that bad, and you have a team to root for! :)
Your first game is on Monday, against host Ukraine.

Speaking of rooting for a team:

Which are the teams you are cheering for? Do you pick one at every game you watch? Do you have a team, or a couple of teams, which you support throughout the tournament? And why?

I'll start:

This EURO, I root for Greece, England and Germany. Additionally, I pick one of the two sides in most games I watch.

Reasons can be different for me to root for a team: the underdogs, or a team that plays risky, offensive and fast on that day, or stuff that doesn't have anything to do with football: an especially cherished holiday memory from a country, oppposition to everybody else in the room while watching, or of course one or more good looking players.

Nuno Gomes alone made me cheer for Portugal for many happy years ;D

For Greece I cheer because they're an underdog team, because I like Greece as a country (it does have a special feeling to it, relaxed, slow and friendly) and because of the fun sounding names of the players.

England because I'm a fan of everything British. And: Three Lions on a Shirt. Best football anthem ever. 8)

Germany because the Germans' attitude toward football has changed in the last years. They used to be very grim, serious and arrogant about football. When they lost, it was almost a national crisis. ::) And of course I loved to mock that. ;D I used to always root against the German team, no matter who the opponent was.

Since we hosted the world championship in 06, and with public viewing coming up, the attitude has changed. It's more fun, playful and cheerful now and I like that. :)

Because I'm French, I tend to cheer for the latins: Portugal & Spain and even Italy.  I used to hate Italy because they played so defensively and the players were like delicate flowers, falling and rolling around in pain if you looked at them the wrong way.  I do like Germany, now that the players are all gay  ;) and play a more interesting game.
I'm worried about Spain today with Villa missing:

Halftime:  Iker Casillas is busy today, that last save was impressive. He's my favourite goalie.

Ha ha, the Italians have the same reputation here.
I didn't like the Italinans for a while for the very same reason. They kicked out "my" Aussies in the quater (or 1/8?) finals some years ago unfairly. A dive by an Italian player got them a penalty shot, which was successful and the game ended 1:0 for Italy.
But I guess I'm over that now.

Half-time quickie:

Spain : Italy 0:0

No goal so far, but still a lively game. Interesting to watch, I like both teams today.

Spain : Italy ended 1:1

I got to say the result is fair, even though I rooted a little more for Spain than for Italy.
It was a very good game, the best I've seen so far. Pretty fast, both teams didn't fall back on the 1:1 but worked for victory.

But guess what? Both goals were shot while we were eating. *grumbles* I saw almost the complete game, but missed both goals.

Fabregas (red, Spain) and Bonucci

Torres had to sit on the bench for the greatest part of the game. But when he was in - boy, he was good!

(One more word about him: freckles :D)

Next one up is Ireland : Croatia in 45 mins

Too bad you missed the goals.  They were only a couple of minutes apart.  I agree, best game so far!  It looked like Bolatelli was a bit pissed off that Di Natale scored just seconds after replacing him.  It was nice to see the ridiculously handsome Jesus Navas near the end.

Halftime quicky:

We-love-striped-stockings-country (formerly known as Ireland) vs. Croatia  1 : 2

I'm rooting for Ireland, but think Croatia will win.

Oh, and I bet on Croatia; we started a betting group (just the five of us, and no money involved, just for the kicks of it). 1 point for every correctly guessed winner and three points for every correctly guessed result.

The betting and point counting continues for the whole three weeks. Hm, maybe I'll put a prize in for the overall winner.....

Some pics of the Croatia - Ireland game:

Irelands coach, Mr. 'Bottle Empty' Trappatoni, is not happy. Understandably.

I like the perspective of this one

Apparently, a streaker (though not nekkid) showed up ...
(I missed this, perhaps it was shortly after the final whistle)

... and made it to the Croatian coach. Success!

Yes, wasn't it?

Greece : Czech Republic  1 : 2

:( My poor Greeks lost. The game started with a bang, rather two. The Czechs shot two goals within the first 6 (or so) minutes, then lagged for a while. Started to get interesting once again when the Greeks shot the 1 : 2.

Guess who missed both goals by the Czechs? ::) Mostly I join 10 or 15 minutes into the game, because the first 10 mins nothing ever happens (well, almost ever ). My bad. ::)

I feel bad for Greece.  I lived in Toronto's Greek Town for years, a wonderfully vibrant neighbourhood full great restaurants and sexy, stylish greek men, I loved it. I can just imagine what the mood is like there tonight.  Feast your eyes on Greece's Georgios Samaras, lol!  (Before Photobucket censors it for showing pubes)

I thought the Poland-Russia game was very entertaining. Both teams played offensively, and damn, was that a dream-goal by Blaszczykow!

I wanted to strangle the German commentator though. He couldn't keep from paising the referee-team into the high heavens. Every single decision of the (main) referee was "perfect", as he told us time and time again. Didn't take me long to figure out the referee team was German.  ::) :P

Sadly, in the news this morning they report there were riots last night between Polnish and Russian fans. >:(
Over 100 were arrested and 15 injured.

Denmark : Portugal  2 : 3

Game was okay. Not really a good game, but 5 goals alltogether made it interesting. I slept through parts of it. Not because it was so boring, but because I'm not feeling well. Stomach is unsettled. :P

Next up is a classic: Netherlands : Germany.

The two countries have a dislike against each other as far as football is concerned. My own support for the German team is often wavering, but tonight you bet I root for the Germans!

Many sites have photo galleries about games gone by through the decades between NL and Ger. I skipped through them and found some funny pics:

1974
This pic looks almost like a photoshop. One guy is lying as if on the beach, the second German guy looks like he's taking a leisure stroll in the park.
But note the length of their shorts! That's how shorts ought to be IMO: short

1978
More short shorts ;D

2002
Sorry, guys, did we disturb you activities?
Is there a spanking going on?
Or do you need an instruction manual?

The shorts already getting longer in 2002, but still better than today. Personally, I blame Pete Sampras for it. Yep, the tennis player. He was the first guy I ever saw knee-length shorts (rather bermudas) on. ::) ;D

Apparently the Dutch like to yell "Giive us back our bikes!" when Germany plays. What a hoot!

I'm watching the game now as I write.  Denmark vs Portugal it's the start of the second half so we are still 1:2.  I think it's a wonderful match, I've been on the edge of my seat!

Here's a tasty shot of Denmark's Fabio Coentrao , who obviously has another job, lol!

Is this the same Fabio Coentrao ?!

And here is the delectable Goal Keeper for Portugal, Rui Patricio:

We have to have a pic of Denmark's Nicklas Bendtner.  After all he did score the two goals:

And how happy is this guy, scoring the winning goal for Portugal?  Great game!:

Germany won 2 : 1 over the Netherlands! :D

Italy : Croatia  1 : 1

I only got to watch the last part of the game; I joined a couple of minutes before Croatia equaled the score. From then on it was interesting, don't know how it was before.

Italy only has 2 points so far. Gonna be interesting! O0

Ukraine : France  What a hoot!

The game doesn't take place at all ATM. The referee cancelled the match due to thunderstorms, lightning and torrential rain. The whole field is under water.

Many (most?) commentators have left their places. The Germans (and others, too of course) still sitting and reporting.

Some fans are partying in the ranks.

+++++++++++++++++++++

Freshly in: they'll try again at 7PM (which is an hour later)

Halftime quicky:

They game restarted without further problems an hour later. At halftime it's 0 : 0

The next game this evening (Sweden : England) is going to be delayed by 15 mins, so there won't be overlapping of the two games.

Quelle surprise!

Poland is out.
Russia is out.

Czech Republik : Poland  1 : 0

Greece : Russia  1 : 0  (!! :o!)

Russia, who won so clearly against the Czech Republik (4:1) lost this evening against underdog Greece. Who would have thought! I sat on the edge of my seat, crossing fingers for "my" Greeks that they'll be able to hold it. And they did. :)

Poland, who I believed to be the better team, lost against Czech Republik. My guess would have been the Polish and Russians getting into the next round, and Greece and Czechs going home. Now it's vice versa on both accounts.

Our girls are far ahead re our family betting system. They have 15 resp. 14 points. I am in the middle with 10 points and hubby and my youngest are behind with 6 and 5 points respectively. One of my daughters even guessed the Greeks would win over Russia.

Whahappen?

Watched the Portugal/Czech Republic match on Tuesday.  It wasn't a great game but Ronaldo had some pretty good moves and delivered in the end.  Tonight I'll watch the Germany-Greece match, I think Germany won it 2-1.

Busy, busy, busy. Still watched all games over the last days. I found the Portugal/Czech Republic game to be so lame and boring that I skipped parts of watching. :P
If only they still had Nuno Gomez playing.... that would have saved the match for me. ;)
Ronaldo? - Pah, I don't care for him, looks-wise, and he seems so dammned arrogant. But the goal was technically challenging. He CAN play football, gotta give him that.

Okay, I have a new fav. :)
Sami Khedira from Germany.

I just like the name, can't help it. Sami Khedira - that has a ring to it. I think he's an excellent player, not one of the showy strikers, but one that always does his work, he's dependable. I like that.
Last night I heard him in an interview for the first time. Oh my gosh, the guy can express himself! He uses long sentences, and they're even grammatically correct! Measured by footballers' intellectual standards, he's a genius. ;)

Oh my. What a drama!

England is out after penalty-shootout. They never win penalty-shootouts, never.

I have to say Italy was clearly the better team, and their victory is well-deserved. Even though my heart beats for England.

Gil, I think you've posted a pic of Andy Caroll before. Took me till this evening to really notice the guy, lol. And John Hart, the English goalie! :) I loved how he smiled all the time. You had the feeling he was having a pleasant evening.

Yes, I did mean Barotelli. And it's Joe Hart, not John. Guess I was really tired last night; probably from so many hours of watching hot guys football. ::) ;D

Barotelli is not really my type, it was just his chiseled back I admired. Like a perfect statue.

But Hart and Carroll, yum!

Lookit that, who could resist such a smile?

When I googled pictures of him, I found it really striking in how many pics he's smiling. And he's doing funny faces. Gotta love that!

^^Welcome to the Andy fucking Carroll Fan Club!^^^^

So Spain is going to the Finals!  It was a pretty good elegant match (despite the nine yellow cards!) but I do feel bad for millionaire Ronaldo, he looked so very disappointed.  :'(

The main thing I noticed from the game is how thick Nelson Oliveira's hair is.  I mean, wtf, I'm sure you could use a number one clipper on his head and still not see his scalp.  Plus he'll probably have the same hair when he's 90.  I hate him! [slap!] I love him! [slap!] I hate him!

And I do have a thing for ears, yum!

Gerard Piqué was also a contender with his version of the woody woodpecker hair style:

Yes, it was a nice match for the greatest part. Towards the second half of the second half it bacame a bit lame, you had the feeling neither team really had the drive to win this thing. But the Spanish did well in the extra time, it was the first time they were clearly better than Portugal.

Penalty shootout is of course a lottery every time. Portugal's young goalie impressed me with saving the very first shot. The way he did it was just cool. 8)
Goalies are a special breed. They have to be firm as a rock, calm in the biggest storm, simply the backbone of their team. Of course I'm biased, my daughter is a goalie and has been ever since she started her sports.

Portugal's Fabio Coentrao confused me a little. From afar he looks like Spain's Torres and I was like Huh? Why is Torres playing for Portugal now?

Torres

Coentrao
not bad either, but no freckles

And speaking of goalies, Spain's Iker Casillas

I noticed the hair also! To be honest, I don't remember which player it was, but I remember thinking Gee, what a thick mop of hair, and I assume it must have been Oliveira.

Overdosing on testosteron - a clear yes when I look at the picture.
Got a few strange looks (remember, I was seeing it with ~45 people I hadn't seen in many years). When he took off his shirt and we got another perfect look at his back I said, Damn, that's almost worth it.

Due to highschool reunion, I watched only on and off and since I wasn't that much into the game, I didn't mind that the Germans lost. And since it was Italy, you can call it a tradition. ;)

After the game we heard parades of cars honking and when we went home later the main place and street were full of people partying, cheering and waving Italian flags. Guess there's a big Italian community in town. That was nice. :)
My friend, who still lives there, told us when Germany wins, the whole inner town is completely closed off with partying people, with no way for cars to get through. Public viewing is a win/win situation. The restaurants make good business, and people enjoy seeing the games in a group plus partying afterwards.
I never would have thought Germans can be so spontaneous, taking over the streets and towns for party, and cheerful. Such a thing was completely unknown until some years back.
