DVD shelf display at stores.
« on: April 04, 2006, 04:55:15 pm »
I'm just wondering what you guys have noticed.

At TARGET, it's rather odd. There is a shelf for New Releases in their dvd section, facing the aisle. The shelf is about 6ft tall, 3ft wide. The top 2 rows were Narnia. They clearly expect Narnia to be top sellers, as they devoted more shelf space for it. the next 2 rows was a bunch of various dvds. and then the fourth is BBM, and the bottom was some bunch of other dvds. I was a little ticked off that BBM was relegated so low. There wasn't on row set aside for Crash, not that I noticed. What's odd to me is that you'd think they take the cereal aisle approach. put the movies that appeal to kids lower and the adult stuff up top. If I was setting it up, I'd have Narnia taking the middle to lower shelves, and Crash and BBM toward the top. Now this might just be this particular TARGET. I don't know if they have a nation wide policy on how to stock their shelves, like some stores do.

Target is not the only one.  Walmart has no sign and the DVD's are under lock and key.  When Walk the Line first came out, there were signs and shelves all over the place.

At my Target it was Narnia on the top two shelves, and BBM on the third, with other 'crap' on the fourth and fifth.

I remember having to bend over to read if the DVD was full screen or wide screen, and I thought if it might not be some joke TARGET employees are playing.

At Wal-Mart this morning BBM had its own display case in the front of the store next to Narnias and Harry Potters.  On the top of the display it had the '8 Academy Award Nominations' and had a pic of Heath and Jake on the sides........of course they also had them in the back with the rest of the DVDs as well.....

Are you kidding?  My Wal-Mart didn't have a display or sign, it was back in the Entertainment department but it was not under lock and key.  That's a bit drastic...  :P

My Wal-Mart was nothing like that.  No display, and shoved onto the New Releases section of the entertainment department next to Crash special edition.
Love.  You have a problem with it?

Nope, not kidding at all.  They had a sign for Narnia and a sign for Fun with Dick and Jane, coming April 11.  I even said to my husband, I hope they have it here.  Down here in Maryland they were protesting Walmart selling it.
When I went to Electronics, the girl had to get a key to take it out of the case.

That is incredible.  :o   I thought my Wal-Mart was going to pitch a fit, especially since they tried to hide entrance advertisement by facing it toward the wall.  I wonder how many people will comment to them about it?

I don't understand.

Under lock and key?  Do they think the Fundies will try to steal them to keep them from selling them, perchance?  Or hide them where no one can find them?  In any event, what a sorry state of affairs.

Lessee - at the Blockbuster I went to, they were going to be on a display all their own IN FRONT of the Narnia display.  (I think a manager liked the movie - the woman who checked me out and directed me to where they were seemed to have her act together way more than the average bear and complimented me on my purchase.)  The display wasn't set up yet when I got there, but it was started.  About 20 DVDs were out next to it and ready to be put on the shelves.

At the Best Buy, they were on a table of their own with the books in the middle.  Mostly widescreen available and some fullscreen.  Lots out, in stacks, and several missing from several of them.  No sign, though, whereas Narnia had their own graphic displays and had two full endcaps in a more visible area dedicated to it.

Is it the distributor or the store who decides how it will be displayed?  I'm thinking it must be the latter from what I've seen here.

I really wouldn't put it past them, they probably have church meetings about it ::)

At my Target, Brokeback Mountain was on top!!

Narnia was on bottom.

Then I stopped by Borders on the way home just to see and there was a HUGE display for Brokeback Mountain, with a poster surrounded by the DVD, and the Crash special edition was not even out!

Found Crash in the new releases along with Brokeback and Brokeback was faced out in the drama section under "B".

It was everywhere in there...   :)
I know I shall meet you on that final day! Water Walkin' Jesus, take me away...

I guess that Target and Borders must have missed the memo, which reads,

"And Brokeback - you're gonna pitch that one in the back on the q.t. *away* from the sheep (our best customers).  No display.  Don't leave no sign.  Don't want them Hollywood liberals pushing their gay agenda sniffin' around."
