OMGCHECKPLEASE!QUESTION_TIME_FROM_NGOZI
http://ngoziu.tumblr.com/

Answer Time Starts NOW!

Hey, everyone! I’ll be answering Qs for the Tumblr AT for about an hour or so and you can follow along here for the responses. Thanks for checking this out and happy Friday!

5 hours ago 240 NOTES

omgchckplease asked: what has been the most surprising thing to you since you've started omgcp?
4 hours ago 1,172 NOTES

That it has resonated with so many people! I’m astounded. I guess there are some universal themes in a gay hockey pie college fratty vlog-based online comic staring a random kid from Georgia? Thanks for your Q!

kuba-cygnarowski asked: You've said that Kent is one of your favorite characters. Why? (Btw I love your art. You are amazing)
4 hours ago 587 NOTES

Thanks for your question!

I’ll go ahead and say now that most if not ALL of my characters are my favorite characters! Some days I like writing Lardo and Nursey more than I like writing Dex and Holster, and some days I want to write all about the Falconers instead of Whiskey and Tango. (Although at all moments in time I like writing about Chowder.)

I do like writing about Parse because he’s an antagonist, and is very different from the members of SMH. He’s more mysterious and a foil to Bitty in a lot of ways as well. Plus, his cowlick is very fun to draw.

buckysasset asked: Hi Ngozi! I'm a huge fan of your work and I can say with no doubts that you're one of my favorite artists of all time. I live for CP updates hahah! My question is, what prompted you to start developing Check, Please! ? How did the idea come up? Sorry if you've already talked about something like this before! ❤️❤️❤️
4 hours ago 1,136 NOTES

Buckysasset, This is a great question!

My senior year of college, I took a screenwriting seminar and wrote a full-length screenplay called Hardy. It’s the story of a super stoic, brooding, and kinda dumb hockey player who falls in love with his best friend—who happens to be a dude. I didn’t know much about hockey at the time, so I threw myself into research. I got deep in it, fam. And by the time I graduated and had this excess of hockey knowledge, I knew that I would be heading off to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) for a Sequential Art MFA.

I figured starting a webcomic would be a great summer project to polish my drawing skills before my degree work, and also to dump out all of this hockey knowledge that I had acquired over the last 3 or so months. Because Hardy  was such a dark story, I had actually started writing about a bubbly pie-baking hockey player in the margins of my script—just something lighter and more comedy-based. (Which are the usual narratives I stick to.)  So in the Summer of 2013—on a bit of a whim—I drew Bitty sitting in his Samwell college dorm room for the first time!

Hope that answers your question!

studio-iko asked: Hey Ngozi! I just wanted to say you are one of my biggest inspos and the fact that you're also Nigerian (and i assume igbo, wassup) has also been another huge inspo. That being said I wanted to ask, Do you have any advice on inproving story and art?
3 hours ago 355 NOTES

YOOOOOOOOOO Naija represent!! (And I am most definitely Igbo!!)

I’ll focus on storytelling! My storytelling definitely improved because of the activities I did throughout college and grad school

My frog year at Yale, I joined a humor magazine. (The Yale Record  founded in 1872 America’s Oldest College Humor Magazine and Originator of the Word HOTDOG.) For about two years I cranked out so many raw jokes–that is, just humor writing without context. Like, 2% of them were chuckle worthy, but it helped me practice my timing.

I also did stand-up comedy for a hot second there and that helped with my writing and timing as well.

But perhaps most important, was the fact that I did lots of long-form improv comedy and worked with fantastic directors. The long-form troupes that I got to perform in were so grounded in honest-reactions and going deep into themes and playing at your highest intelligence. so much of Bitty’s Twitter was “Yes and”-ing whatever a reader brought to the table–or tweeting about something totally random and specific, and trying to have Bitty respond or riff as honestly as possible.

deer-lorde asked: hey ! ive been following omgcp for a year and a half and i always adore it ! it really inspires me to become a sequential artist ! my question is what did you major in at Yale and did you like it there ? thanks so much!
2 hours ago 335 NOTES

I majored in Computing and the Arts and I absolutely loved Yale. The people were incredibly smart, talented and had emotional IQs out the wazoo. Fun fact? I actually had to decide between Yale, Harvard, and MIT–and Yale won out because the people were so genuine.

hodidido asked:  Hi Ngozi! 😊 Do you have a beta/editor or do you do all the editing yourself?
2 hours ago 153 NOTES

I’m Ms. Typo Town, mayor and deputy sheriff of Typo County, so I usually send my comics over to a friend to scout out egregious errors. (Like I’m not even trying to think about the number of accidentally omitted words / your-you’re misuses / typos that went down during the Answer Time. @_@) But yes, I have to look over everything myself as well!

collidingsivan asked:  hi! did you ever expect omgcp to actually gain such an active following on tumblr and even twitter? the impact your comic has brought is so extraordinary, there's so much fanart and fanfics and blogs just centered around your comic! is it kinda surreal how far you've come since the beginning?
2 hours ago 1,441 NOTES

Collidingsivan,

I didn’t expect for this many people to care. I’m constantly amazed and honestly? Haha, a bit confused by it all!

I remember when I was first posting the comic, and I knew that at least 5 people were reading it. (Oh boy, you bet I checked those Tumblr notes like a fiend.) I wrote each of their usernames down in my notebook and would add a new username whenever someone else stumbled upon the story. I wasn’t super consistent with this practice but it was so exciting!  When I flip through my story notes from Year One I find so many random usernames.

And then, at a certain point, people started sharing the comic with their friends. LIKE, WITHOUT ME ASKING THEM TO. It was thrilling to see people feel so enthusiastic about this truly random story I was telling. I was blown away that people were that kind and that they cared that much to recommend/share/endorse/yell about a hockey-pie comic.

And then I’m pretty sure I called my sister the first time someone wrote–not quite a fanfic–but a something. Like an 100 word drabble about Bitty that was just a wee bit of transformative fandom.

And then, eventually I couldn’t use the #omgcheckplease tag on Tumblr because people were posting in it! Like, I got to see in real-time people making their own space to talk about the comic. Then the AO3 tag started to fill up. Then people wanted to chat about Check, Please! on Twitter. And then more and more people started sharing the comic right after each update.

And then Jack and Bitty kissed– @_@.

And so, as the comic has grown to this point–and I see the fan pages and the fic projects and the fanart and the essays–WHEW. It’s a lot. (It’s only been three years.)

I’m very thankful. But you know, you’re right, it is a bit surreal? I might never be able to wrap my head around it, how people can care so much, but I’m glad they do. Seriously. I used to be able to count you guys on one hand!.

Answer Time Over!

Okay, you guys! That went on, er, a tad longer than I had anticipated, but was a ton of fun. Thank you so much for your questions and kind words.

THANK YOU!

"can we talk",  "we need to talk", or any variations of those, are not good.
