November 7th, Pine Creek
« on: November 07, 2006, 03:29:54 pm »
Guess this would belong to our daily thoughts, but since I don't have thread there, I post it here.

Today is November, 7th - the suggested date to meet at Pine Creek, but the postcard came back, stamped deceased :(

Just had to think of it. Brokeback got me good, too.

Thanks, Penthesilea.

Every time I wrote the date today, something was nagging at me.  Now I know what it was.

Yesterday was Ennis and Alma's divorce (we "celebrated" it on the ABCs).

Strange to be feeling these anniversaries.

The camping trip that never was. :(

Nice, Milli.

I know it wasn't included in the film, and I'm sure the shot of the pickup in the twilight is more effective since it mirrors the shot of the semi in the twilight at the beginning of the film, but somehow I like that shot of Ennis by "the grieving plain," as Annie called it.

I was actually in a good mood till this. The feeling I experienced  watching that incredibly sad part of the film were resurrected.  :'(  It really hit me.   I know Thanksgiving in BBM wasn't a happy day either.  I got the 2007 BBM calendar.  It just shows regular holdiays, nothing connected to the film.

Any cheerful anniversaries regarding the film coming up soon?  Jack and Ennis never met during the winter and their times together were the more joyful aspects of this film. Nuthin to look forward to until May?  I guess we don't know the date Ennis and Alma get married in November, 1963. Not that that's cause for celebration either as it just closes another window of opportunity, for J&E.

Well, there was the time that Ennis and Jack got Don Wroe's cabin for their get-together and killed themselves a nice elk!! Let's raise a toast to Don Wroe and thank him for lending his cabin for an E&J tryst huntin trip.

Hey, Guys -

I was thinking about you more than usual today and just wanted to say thanks for showing me where I needed to make some changes in my life. I'm really trying, and some really great things have been happening. I'm looking forward to seeing you when you come through the end of January. I'll tell you all about it then. (Yeah, I know, Jack... you're always in the f**king cold...)

I'm really enjoying the music you sent - thanks for that.

I've got some more questions about my trip in July. I want to use that same campsite of yours by the bridge and I'm still not clear about where I turn off. Can you maybe draw me a map?

Give my love to Bobby and the girls.

You're on my mind every day, and will always be in my heart, but you know that. And I love you both (but you know that, too.)

See you soon. We've got a lot to talk about.

Thanks for bringing this thread back today, Chrissi.  I loved Meryl's poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay.  Here's another, sad favorite poem.

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone.
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead,
Put crépe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song,
I thought that love would last forever: 'I was wrong'

The stars are not wanted now, put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

I still find it heartbreaking that Ennis signs the postcard with 'Ennis del Mar'. What other Ennis would Jack have known?

This struck me the same way at first, SdSSS. But I've found it a  common practice  among young and under-educated adults not skilled in letter writing to do this. On second reading I found it sweet somehow. For what it's worth, I believe Annie for the thousandth  zillionth  :-* time demonstrated her total understanding of her characters.

But isn't that part of the wonder of Brokeback? Even a simple signature opens our hearts and set our minds to thinking.
Again, just my take on it. Not more valid than yours or anyone else's.

Here's my contribution, and sing this merrily, like an Irish jig!!

"Oh muffle your drums, then play your fifes merrily
Play the Dead March as you go along
And fire your guns right over my coffin,
There goes an unfortunate boy to his home."

"It was once in the saddle I used to go dashing
Once in the saddle I used to go gay,
First down to the dram-house and then to the card house
Got shot in the breast, I am dying today."

"Get six jolly cowboys to carry my coffin,
Get six pretty maidens to carry my pall,
Put bunches of roses all over my coffin,
Put roses to deaden the clods as they fall."

"Then swing your rope slowly, and rattle your spurs lowly,
And give a wild whoop as you carry me along,
And in the grave throw me and roll the sod o'er me
For I'm a young cowboy and I know I've done wrong."

"Go bring me a cup, a cup of cold water
To cool my parched lips," the cowboy said;
Before I turned, the spirit had left him
And gone to its Giver --- the cowboy was dead.

We beat the drum slowly and played the fife lowly,
And bitterly wept as we bore him along,
For we all loved our comrade, so brave, young and handsome,
We all loved our comrade although he'd done wrong."

Crying again...

My tears for you,
Will never end.
Where I bravely go
Thru the world,
Our secret safe inside
My heart.

Betrayed only
When I remember
Your face,
Your smile,
Your laugh,
And that your gone.

"It was only you in my life, and it will always be only you, Jack, I swear."

This is a song by a Dutch singer, Anouk. It always reminds me of the scene where one word on a postcard changed Ennis's whole life:

One Word - Anouk

I close my eyes
And imagine you're here
Did it all seem so hopeless
Given the chance
I would ask
Forgive me
I didn't do a thing to make you stay
I didn't say a word to make you stay
If I would have known
Could I have tried to make it easier
But I didn't do a thing
Or say a word
One word

And I don't know why you're gone, now you're gone
No beautiful goodbye
You will never leave my mind
And it turns out to be so much different than our dreams
Now you're, you're a star in heaven

My thoughts unsaid
Stuck in my head
And it all feels so useless
Never forget to give all I have
Forgive me
I couldn't do a thing to make you stay
And I couldn't say a word to make you stay
If I could have known
Could I have tried to make it easier
But I couldn't do a thing
Or say a word
One word

And I don't know why you're gone, now you're gone
No beautiful goodbye
You will never leave my mind
And it turns out to be so much different than our dreams
Now you're, yeah, you're a star in heaven

Still I don't know why you're gone, now you're gone
No beautiful goodbye
You will never leave my mind
And it turns out to be so much different than our dreams
Now you're, you're a star in heaven
You're a star in heaven now
You're a star in heaven
Yeah, you're my star

Since Jack and Ennis never made it to Pine Creek, let's go there for them. Meet you there with two cans of beans tout suite. Don't be late. Hell, be late if you have to. Redline it, but don't be caught by a horn dipstick so to speak.

Yeah, that was my main motivation to write my stories, I knew there was a way in which they could have made it together, at least in an alternate universe... and I needed it to exist not only in my head, but put it on paper... Thanks for your sweet words... Mel

Today is very special to me!
It is the culmination of a long journey that started on Brokeback Mountain with two cowboys I fell in love with.
Not a sexual kind of love but a love bourne of the pain of recognition. I saw myself in them. I saw my pain expressed in their lives I saw where and how I would  end up if I didn't change.
All of this understanding was driven home in that post card that was returned to Ennis in that small post office in Riverton. We are not promised tomorrow. We have one life and one shot at living it to the fullest. Each day we don't do that is a day wasted that we will never get back. No, tomorrow may never come so if Ennis and Jack have taught us anything it is this "Seize the Day" Carpe Diem. my friends!Live each day as it were your last foritmay just be!

Pine Creek day again :(.
Can't believe it's our third Pine Creek day together.

And now, thinking back to Pine Creek day last year, we didn't know what an additional layer of grief would be added to our BBM experience only two months later.

Hi everyone,

Pine Creek Day, November 7th, is rolling around again.  I'm organizing a viewing of Brokeback Mountainin BetterMost chat for that day.  It will be at 5pm Eastern time//2pm Pacific Time//9am (Nov 8 ) in Sydney//22:00 UTC.

If you want to participate, you can prepare ahead of time by doing two things:

1)  Log into BetterMost chat ahead of time, and check that it works for you.  You can go in alone or with another member and play with the features.  Do this now, if you have a few minutes.  The spot to click is at the top of the page here.

If chat doesn't work for you, download and install the newest version of Java (it's free).  If it still doesn't work after that, then PM me.  If you PM me before installing the newest version of Java, I'm going to ask you to go download and install it before I'll be able to help you.

2)  Have your BBM viewing station in view of your BetterMost chat station.

See you for the movie.  I plan to ask people to push play at ten minutes after the hour.  It's fine to arrive late, we'll just tell you where we're at in the movie.  The plan is to not push pause once we begin.  You can feel free to arrive when you like, and leave when you need.

I have never done this before, and I would really like to join in.

Is it too much to ask for that it be a couple hours earlier?

It'll be 4 fucking am here!!  :o

Sonja, as the first responder, you definitely get to help plan the time.  How about we revise it to 2pm Seattle time (me) and thus 11pm Sweden time (you).  That actually makes it 9am Sunday Sydney time, and Kerry has said he'd like to participate.  How does that sound?

That sounds excellent!!  Thanks!   :D

Just one thing: we have changed to winter time, meaning that the time difference atm is 1 hour less than normal. Will you have changed by then? Otherwise there is only 8 hours difference.

Either way it sounds fine.

I just did a quick calculation with my international clock. At this very moment it is 11.20pm on Thursday night here in Sydney and 4.20am Thursday morning in Seattle, making a 17 hour time difference. So, yep, just confirming that I will be joining the movie viewing starting at 2pm on Nov 7 Seattle time, which will be 9am Nov 8 Sydney time.

Now all I need is for someone to explain to me how I watch the movie AND engage in chat at the same time -  my TV and PC are in different rooms!

Yeah, I have the same problem.   ::)

As I see it the only solution is to move one of the devices. For me it's probably a bigger hassle to move the PC with its zillions of appliances and cords, than moving the TV and the DVD-player. So that's what I'm planning to do.

have you ever used the chat here on Bettermost?

Once you enter it, it´s a small, "floating" window. I usually watch the movie in the background and then have the "floating" window in corner somewhere.

The stars are not wanted now, put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

~~W.H. Auden

I've been reading back in this thread.

This is a very beautiful poem, Paul.

It's the one that was read at the funeral in that movie, whatever-the-name-was, isn't it?
When everyone suddenly realized that their two male friends had been a couple for years, without anyone knowing it.

You might have to move one or the other for the day.   :-\  I don't own a TV, so I watch the DVD on my laptop and occasionally ALT-Tab back to the chat session...it's rather disruptive for the movie watching, though.  I see the purpose of this as more interacting with my fellow BetterMostians, so that's OK.  It's not as if we don't know the film by heart.   ;)

I plan to watch it on my laptop in a reduced size, so that I can use the same screen for chatting at the exact same time!

I do encourage everyone to make sure that chat works for you long before November 7th.  You will likely need the latest version of Java installed.  This is free, and good for other things besides BetterMost chat.  If I can help you I will - but not during the chat.  Then, I'm going to enjoy myself.  So practice, move, adjust, chat, learn, now, not then!

We will be starting the movie in unison, and once started will not pause it (we learned that tip the hard way in a previous simulchat).  It's fine to arrive late - when you're ready, go ahead and ask where we are in the movie, and I can give you the time code for what point we are.

Here is what I use to determine what time is when/where:  http://www.timeanddate.com/  I use its "Meeting Planning" page.

Thanks, Lynne, for bringing this thread back up.  I read it from the beginning and came across Rich's post, above.

I had a little November 7th moment today. I bought a sleeping bag today - a blue one. I wasn´t planning on it but as I was walking around in a store I suddenly saw sleeping bags on display. I went over to look and a blue sleeping bag caught my eye. When I couldn´t find a price tag, I asked one of the store clerks  and it turned out that the sleeping bag I was looking at was the only one left of its kind and was no longer in stock. I was offered to buy it for almost nothing. As I am aiming to camp more in the future, I jumped on it.

Then as I got home and logged onto bettermost, I was reminded that today is November 7. And there I was with my blue sleeping bag next to me, thinking about doing more camping.
Just a little nice (and slightly weird) Brokeback Mountain moment.

      Dearest Richard:

I love you, and always will.  I now know that you were meant to be in my
life.  I know you are happy and content, in the place you are.  You can be
seen trying to make others understand the import of living your life to the very
fullest.  You did so, and I know that you are so very happy that you did.  You gained
so much to impart to others, and so much that helped you make the decisions that
helped you live a much happier life.  You met all the wonderful people and helped
your treasured daughter live and attempt to live the remainder of her blessed life.
With all the benefits that you were able to give her, with the dear love you felt for her.
She really can never have the true idea of the love and caring that you had for her.
You treasured her every moment and deed.  You also shared the beauty that she had
with all of us.  For that, we must eternally thank you.  I love you dearly, and hope to
meet up again someday wherever that may be.  Our time with you was way too brief.  mama Janice

Let's all plan something special, perhaps with a loved one who we have neglected lately, for Pine Creek Day, November 7. I'm planning to have a short getaway with my spouse to the mountains, to drink a little Western Slope wine, check out the tacky memorabilia in the Colorado Hotel and hit the hot springs at Glenwood Springs, Colorado!

No matter how many years have passed, Pine Creek Day is a sad day.
I wonder what Ennis did that year. If he took off from work? Worked overtime? Got drunk? I don't think he's a guy who puts much importance to dates, to anniversaries. But he must have thought about their trip on that first Pine Creek Day.

Imagine had he not got the card back in the mail stamped "Deceased". How long would he have sat there waiting?

I am working at taking Rich's pronouncement to heart. I had lunch with a friend of mine and her sister visiting from Chicago and had a wonderful time catching up.

I just reread this thread.
I read about my own astonishment when we had our third Pine Creek Day together. - Tomorrow will be our ninth. Wow.

Pine Creek Day is still a sad day. It reminds me of all the Brokies we've lost. Maybe it's because it's so close to Allerseelen (All Souls' Day), when we traditionally visit the cementaries and think of all those gone before us. And when I read through this thread, there's the year after Heath passed, Rich's sadly prophetic statement, Janice's heartfelt letter to Rich, which I don't even read completely because it makes me all teary-eyed. It makes me also think of Rodney, Jackie and Shasta.

So many friends we've lost. I think it's fitting to think of them on the day when Ennis must have thought of Jack with a broken heart, on that very first Pine Creek Day.

Get ready, it's coming. Brokies' most solemn day. Pine Creek Day, with memories of Don Wode's cabin, taking an elk, and the shock of a postcard marked DECEASED.  :'(

Tomorrow is Pine Creek Day. I must sum up the courage to watch BBM  :'(
And all my thoughts are going to my dear fellow brokies. Who would have thought that after 10 years so many of us would still be commemorating those events in J&E's lives

Do you know if the picnic area at Elbow Creek is restored?
Even if we can never get our site back, it would be nice to know that the rest is built up again.

Sadly they will never restore the picnic area at Elbow Falls. There is a sign telling people that repairs are not possible and where else they can go for picnics.
But the interesting thing is that people still come and bring their own BBQs and still picnic there It is a well loved area

Where had you found THE bench? I looked for it in vain...

How sad that it won't be restored.

As for the bench, we found it some place downstream, by chance.  It was very distinctive and different from the normal picnic benches, so it stood out.  But, everything was so destroyed and disoriented, I couldn't tell you exactly where it was.

The plaque is commemorating a deceased hiker.
The bench was sited exactly opposite our beloved "sweet life" rocks.
I had hoped that in the future, if we were ever let out of the Old Brokies' Home, we could visit in our dotage, sit on the bench and think about J&E.

Seeing these pics again, I still marvel at the fact that we actually found it at all!

It was purely by chance, like Paul said.

....or, maybe, we were drawn there by the spirits of our boys...    8)

It would have been a very cool thing to have indeed!   ;D   But that suitcase thing is a major obstacle....   ::)

Can see the pics now....it's really too bad we can't fix it, but pretty cool you still found the bench.

I think so too. And furthermore, it's pretty cool that the inscription was still there, after 4 fucking years!

Paul and I carved it in 2009 - with our keys, no less!  :D  The carving was quite shallow, because it proved to be more laborious than we thought.

In 2011, we didn't get a chance to check on the inscription because there were people (non-brokies!  :o) sitting on the bench. We thought they might find it a wee bit strange if strange people in cowboy hats all of a sudden crawled behind their backs and squatted right behind them and started inspecting and caressing the bench they were sitting on.... ::) ::)

So, in 2013 it wasn't just the miracle that we found the bench in the first place, but also the fact that the inscription was still so clearly visible!!

Oh yes, please do!

I imagine that even if they don't restore the area, at least they will clear all the debris away.

And when they find the bench, maybe they'll keep it and put it back somewhere nearby, because of the plaque.

To quote the 6 Million Dollar Man intro.....we can rebuild....

Tell him when l come up to him and ask to play the record, l'm gonna say: ''Voulez-vous jouer ce disque?''
'Voulez-vous, will you kiss my dick?'
Will you play my record? One-track mind!

Nice to review these photos and comments while observing Pine Creek Day. Thanks, friend, for the banner and link!

I wonder what's become of the bench?

Let the world pause while we solemnly observe PINE CREEK DAY.

With a slow tip of the hat to our departed friend Rich and thanks to mouk for her vigils and Lucise for her art.

Getting ready for Pine Creek Day, I notice some of the photos have gone missing. Could we repost them and spruce this place up? Or pine it up?

What Brokebacky thing did you do on Pine Creek Day? I went to the Crab House with EDelMar (see photo on my blog). Why is that Brokebacky? Well, we used to go to the Del Mar Crabhouse until it closed, so this is its replacement. One time I went there with Amanda and it hailed. She photo'ed me catching hail in my hat.

Here's the old banner, with Rich's quotation.

Welcome to BetterMost
We celebrate Pine Creek Day, November 7

"We are not promised tomorrow. We have one life and one shot at living it to the fullest.
Each day we don't do that is a day wasted that we will never get back.
No, tomorrow may never come, so if Ennis and Jack have taught us anything, it is this:
'Seize the Day'--Carpe Diem.  My friends!
Live each day as if it were your last, for it may just be!"
