I love how she kept the room as basically a shrine to her son. Left everything in it's place. Surely a small house like that, they could have found some other usage for Jack's room...
Instead, it gives Ennis the opportunity to see Jack's world as when he is a boy. And I like the fact that she stands up to her husband in her own way... Her husband isn't particularly happy to see Ennis, but she tries to be comforting, offers him coffee and cherry pie.
I don't know if she knew what the shirts symbolized, but she knew they were important, some connection between her late son and some memorable aspect in his life. Of course, she must have gone thru the closet after he died. Usually ppl throw away stuff, but Jack had been dead only recently. Plus, I suppose it was her only son, so it makes it so much harder to part with his stuff and all she has left is heartless John Twist.
Her facial expressions says alot without her having to verbalize it.
Like, I wish my husband wasn't here right now, we could have a very long talk.
Probably the only sympathy Ennis will ever get from anyone in his relationship with Jack and it's for such a short duration.
