Universal promoting "Let's Go To Prison"
« on: November 20, 2006, 04:22:08 pm »
I have Media Center 2005 and in the Online Spotlight, Yahoo offers news, trailers, etc.   In their extended trailer, Universal is promoting "Lets Go To Prison" as being from the same Studio that brought you BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN!  What do you all think of that?  It blew me away. :o  It looks like it COULD be funny OR it could be INSULTING to the Gay Community and downright rude.  But to promote a half witted comedy on Brokeback's coat tails just makes me cringe!

Lean on me, let our hearts beat in time,
Feel strength from the hands that have held you so long.
Who cares where we go on this rugged old road
In a world that may say that we're wrong.

...Cause I know - A love that will never grow old.

Uh oh.  I don't like the sound of that.    Sure sounds insulting to me.

It doesn't sound very good to me either, David.

I know .. I saw a little bit of the trailer on the telly and it looks like a comedy along the lines of "Road Trip" or "American Pie" etc..
I just remember a scene from the trailer where one of the prisoners was coming on to the new guy and was subsequently washing his hair in the shower or something ..  Well, I won't be watching it anyway ..lol

I am geared to see Bond tomorrow though!  :D

That is a strange way of promoting it, maybe they are appealing to the Oz crowd.  ???

When I saw the trailer, I thought it was stupid.  I have no problem with what they said, but as far as a marketing tactic, I thought it failed.

The core audience for this movie is young males.  Saying that the movie 'resembles' Brokeback Mountain (even though it's all a joke) will backfire, and keep the core audience away.  Yes, there are still some unreserved feelings about BBM among the straight world, especially men. (They still seem threatened or nervous by it.)

And obviously it did backfire over the weekend as the film bombed big time at the box office!

Utterly unnecessary, it just shows Universal pander to the same crowd who enjoyed SM4's wonderfully in-depth satire - at least if you are going to josh it, do it with some dignity :D
