The BBM-painting my boyfriend made for me
« on: November 23, 2006, 07:55:15 am »
On my birthday my boyfriend surprised me with this painting of a scene in Brokeback Mountain. He had taken my dvd (that I noticed immediately...) and every day I was at work he would freeze-frame the movie and start painting. I think he is very talented, but I'm biased, he's my boyfriend! I just wanted to share this with you all. He even put the BetterMost cans of beans (with oxidation) in it and there is a tiny tent in the distance with a camp fire.

The great thing is, he says that this is an open painting. So if anybody thinks there should be something else in it, a symbol of Jack and Ennis or their time on the mountain apart from the tent and the cans of beans, then be sure to let me know.

The painting is very beautiful and I think your boyfriend does have talent. I'm no art expert but the painting seems well done. That's definitely a great birthday present! Thanks for sharing.

Water and clouds are HARD to paint.  (In my opinion they are impossible to paint, so your boyfriend is a friggin' genius.)  This is so lovely.  What are the dimensions, and where are you putting it?  Thanks Melissa's boyfriend!  :)

Clarissa...

The talent Melissa's boyfriend has is incredible for sure. Those clouds look so real I feel as if I could reach out and touch them.  :D

Melissa showed me another painting her boyfriend made. In it, some people were walking along a beautiful beach (I assume in Holland) and he actually painted the reflections of the people in the water. It was incredible, wonderful and beautiful.

I could look at pictures like this all day long.  :)

Thanks so much! I don't know the dimensions in inches, but it's about 1 meter and 20 centimeters width and somewhat less than a meter height... I'm putting it in our bedroom. With all the paintings he has done until now, there is hardly any space left in the rest of our house! :)

It sure is. The water is my favourite part - incredibly difficult to get that sense of movement and luminosity that water has in that kinda light. I'm more of a charcoal and chalk girl myself - they're my favourite materials. I like to do big, physical drawings and make a mess with the charcoal!!

J.M.W Turner is my favourite artist.
I've seen this one up close in the National Gallery in London and it's amazing. You don't get a sense of how overpowering it is to look at from a small picture...

The most famous of the storm series. That's a ship in the middle of the picture. Legend has it that he tied himself to the mast in order to get a sense of what it's like to be in the middle of a storm at sea. Nutter... ::)

One of my favourites...

Hey sweetie!  What a nice piece of work!  What Saucy said: the light playing on the water is terrific — and on the trees in the valley and the grasses in the foreground, too. Believeable natural light is probably the hardest (and most important) element to capture in painting.

(At first I thought the tiny speck next to the tent was a little beige "Ennis" so I was going to suggest he put a 'lil blue "Jack" speck next to it.  But looking again I realize it's a fire.)  Very nice!!

Thanks you all!

Nicky, my boyfriend worked a long time on the water, if you were able to look at it up close (you can't see it on the picture) you would see tiny specks of white which constitute the tiny waves in the water.

We are now looking at the pictures of the Turner paintings you posted, it's very impressive and my boyfriend is especially impressed with the one with the rocks, the clouds above it are so beautiful and threatening at the same time. Thanks for posting, we will make sure to look for it at the National Gallery next time we are in London!

Hey Laura - LOL at the little beige Ennis! Yeah, it's a campfire... ;D I actually asked him to paint them or the horses, but it's too far away, you wouldn't see it... :(

Late to chime in. Just wanted to say your boyfriend sounds way-cool and very talented.  I wish I had that painting or a boyfriend who could paint like that.   It looks like he actually went to the film location and painted it right there on the spot. :)

All the words that are 'surrounding' me (Dutch and English) have spelling mistakes in them because they wanted to piss me off because as an editor and translator I am supposed to be extremely annoyed with spelling mistakes in both languages....  :) Cute huh?

That IS really cute Melissa! I love how they purposely misspelled some of the words!

Is that a mouse down there by your feet? YIPES!!

I love your cartoon! It looks like your colleagues really like you and think highly of you. Obviously they put a lot of work and effort into making this for you!

Hi all,

My boyfriend is currently working on another painting that is Brokeback-related. He is inspired by the pictures of Lightning Flat that were posted on Bettermost (if I remember correctly, EdelMar posted them?)...

It is still a work in progress, but you can get an idea of what it's gonna look like. The streaks in it is tape to mask off certain areas while he is painting!

Once it is finished I will post a picture of it!

I printed it out a while ago and then read it and it made me cry! It was so beautifully written, I could see everything right in front of me. You would probably get a kick out of the fact that I keep the print-out in my copy of the short story! I told JW to read it, but he hasn't yet, he's been so busy painting! I will force him to do this before he finishes it, though!

Thank you, he is getting better and better with every painting! I still don't know how he does it, but I am very proud!!!

Melissa, your boyfriend's work-in-progress is just beautiful. It really reminds me of Andrew Wyeth (and come to think of it, Annie Proulx paints a bit like Wyeth as well, but in words rather than the brush). At any rate, thank you for sharing, and let your boyfriend know how much he is appreciated here.

Great site, Lee! I had seen some of those images before, but not in that format. The shots of Lightning Flat are wonderful, despite the eerie loneliness to the place.

Yes, I can see both those things too!

I have a not-exactly Andrew Wyeth story.  Years ago (late 70s?-early 80s?) I was standing in a record store waiting to pay for my purchases.  The man in front of me pulled out his credit card, and (without meaning to, honest!) I saw his name on the card "Jamie Wyeth."  "Oh, Wyeth," I blurted, "Any relation to Andrew Wyeth?"  He gave me what I thought was an unfriendly smile, and said simply, "Yes."

Several years later, I discovered, through reading, that he was a) Andrew Wyeth's son, and b) quite a famous painter himself.  I then re-interpreted that moment with him:  His irritation with me in retrospect seemed to be about "still in my father's god damned shadow..."

Thank you, I will tell him! I have seen some paintings of Wyeth on the internet, they are really amazing!

Thanks! I will ask him... ;)

I saw most of the pictures of Lightning Flat, but not the ones from Brokeback and Devil's tower... Those snow scooters look like fun! Thanks for posting that link, Lee!

Well, he could've been a bit more friendly about it! Does he paint in the same style as his father?

Melissa, you've got to come to our May get-together in Colorado and Wyoming!  Please!  And bring your sweetie!  You will both come away with a decade's worth of inspiration!

We sooooo wished we could go! But we can't because of various reasons...  :(

The 'funny' thing is that even before I had heard of Brokeback we were planning on going to the Rockies for a hiking holiday, but then my boyfriend was hit by a car while cycling 1,5 years ago and his ankle broke into 8 pieces and he is still rehabilitating... so we wanna wait until he is completely finished rehabilitating! Also, there is the financial situation because we are still waiting for our lawyer to get his ass into gear and calculate damages for the person who hit him.  >:(

I am just hoping that something like this will also be organised next year as well! I have a feeling it will be!

Melissa, this is a beautiful painting your friend makes. Thank you for posting it.

If you or your boyfriend or anyone else is interested, here is a link to an essay I wrote about one of my visits to Lightning Flat. The painting made it all come back to me again.

Lee:
What a wonderful essay you wrote. I loved how you closed the circle in the last paragraphs. They were moving.

I've never read it before, so thanks for putting the link here. I think you should put up an own topic for this essay, so it won't be overlooked (or maybe you already did and I didn't see it?).
For all who haven't read the essay yet: I highly recommend it!

Thanks, I'm so glad you liked it! I didn't post it here because it was a little present to EDelMar for taking me there, and he wanted it to reside on the BBQ site.

So looking forward to meeting you! I saw your picture among the Dutch play pics and couldn't stop smiling!! FRiend Lee
