I'll Be Seeing You: A Brokeback A/U fanfic by bailey
« on: November 25, 2006, 01:17:25 pm »
Link to Every Picture Tells a Story and The Road to Rock Bottom, the first two chapters of "I'll Be Seeing You" a Brokeback A/U fanfic that imagines what might have happened if events had transpired differently after Ennis's divorce.  Not a lot of action, a dash of smex, but mostly a  hard, crooked road for Jack and Ennis as they go their separate ways.  Someday their divergent paths might cross again, but they have a long way to go.  Comments are most welcome.

Hi Connie,

So nice to see you over here at BetterMost!   :-*   I am one of your loyal readers, and I really appreciate all the many Jack and Ennis stories you have written, you  are amazing!  I did not think I would like the A/U story JANKIT because they were out of their element, but you wrote it so well that I loved it!  I was sorry to see it end.....  You are an amazing writer, but I already said that....

I, on the other hand, do not have a way with words, so I will just finish by saying THANK YOU so much for all the many stories, and please please don't ever stop writing Jack and Ennis stories!

Loved chapter 6! Jack worries me so much in this story. Maybe after this little wake up call he'll realize he's got some changes to make. But he's got a hard road ahead of him... Mingo was right, he'll be wanting to go back to Mexico very soon unfortunately  :-\

Glad you like my icon! Ralphie is my hero  :D

Bailey I wanted to say I really loved this update... Ennis is making a lot of strides here, I just hope that he eventually can admit who it is he's erasing out of his life. I really like Danny, I think he's good for Ennis, though I'm afraid he may wind up being the one hurt in the end because I'm not sure that Ennis could give him what he wants, he's making his life better but I wonder if he could ever really be with anyone besides Jack?

Jack worries me so much... I'm nervous about him not being in this chapter and wonder what he's getting himself into  :-\

Thanks for this, I'm really really enjoying this story  :)

I really loved this chapter Bailey. When Danny saw the "mystery man" I about died. And I loved the confrontation between Jack and Ennis. It was very real and very intense. And, though it was hard to read, I think that Jack did the right thing and I'm glad he's finally standing up for himself in whatever way he can. I really think he's gained some strength in the last two chapters.

Thanks for this  :-*

Thank you.  I've been dying to write this chapter ever since chapter three.  Their paths have finally crossed, but they still have a lot of hard miles ahead of them.  Neither is taking full responsibility for his actions yet.  Glad you're still enjoying the ride.

I can't believe no one else is commenting on this thread!! I adore this story.

This newest chapter wrecked me Bailey... I was worried that exact thing was going to happen. Good on Ennis though for not even hesitating to go to Dallas!

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses
You've been out riding fences for so long now
Oh you're a hard one
But I know that you've got your reasons
These things that are pleasing you will hurt you somehow

Don't you draw the queen of diamonds boy
She'll beat you if she's able

I've been reading this on Brokeback Slash, and have commented over there.  Also have found it to be a great story line, lots of soul-searching, shedding of the old, and growing into the new.  As you may be able to tell, I really look forward to the updates...and thanks for having them so close together.

I enjoyed the "new beginning" in chapter 18, where the guys re-introduced themselves to each other.  Just like in 1963.  After almost 20 years they've learned to talk to each other and really listen with open minds and hearts, and both like what they see and hear.  They love each other, have said it more than once to each other in the past days, which is a huge step forward in their relationship.  Now, Ennis is supporting Jack without reservations; hope Jack can learn to accept that unquestioning support and return it.  Jack has found out the hard way, again, who his real friends are; now he needs to re-open his heart and accept Ennis, his best an truest friend, back into his life.  Come on , guys, we're rooting for you.

But, I have some plot questions [who doesn't!!]
     Cal?
Tipsy's Lawyer? why was she so insistent on the doctor contacting him?
Bobby? What if anything does he know about the cause of the accident? and should we be worried?
Lureen?  Glad to see she realizes that she pushed Jack away because of peer pressure, and the breakup wasn't
          one-sided.
     Mingo?
     The unknown informant?
And, of course, Rally?...who didn't rally around, but ran...true colors shown...yellow.

Feel like we're about half-way home on this one...would like to have another 20 chapters before the finale.  No pressure, though.  Just keep it coming, please.

Your feelings are right on the money.  We're about at the apogee or maybe we've just passed the nadir  ;D  At any rate, we're around the halfway point now.  From here, the boys have a base to build on.  We'll see what they make of it.

18 chapters and we're only at the half-way point?? That makes me really happy  ;D

This was another great chapter Bailey, I particularly love Lureen's realization about what caused her dissatisfaction with her marraige.
‘cause the truth is, I already give him everythin’ I got to give, more than I ever even knew I had; ‘n it all for him, all of it, him who is my brother, my father, my child, my friend, my lover, my heart, my soul; my Ennis.

The second half should be more fun to write.  The road is still rocky for Ennis and Jack, but at least their paths are converging now.  I'm happy you liked Lureen's inner thoughts.  I always figured she'd be more puzzled than angry if she found out, like, "what? I ain't enough for him?"

Oh, what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what'll you do now, my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin',
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest,
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty,
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden,
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten,
Where black is the color, where none is the number,
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin',
But I'll know my song well before I start singin',
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Sounds like twins!

I prefer nadir...since it looks like the worst part of the separation is past and it's uphill from here for the guys, rebuilding their trust and friendship to go along with their love.  Notwithstanding the shooting in the courtroom...in the days before security checkpoints and all.

Sounds like Cal is going to get his, but am waiting to find out who did the shooting, and if he survived, and who the witnesses were, and all that.  Chartoff's character is interesting, and I hope he comes through some more.

It just gets better and better, more to think about, more threads intertwining, more to savor in each chapter.  The bull is bucking again, and we're holding on tight for another ride...fore more than 8 seconds, though!

Bailey, this chapter was a bit confusing regarding the time-line and I had the feeling there was a part missing between the end of the last chapter and this one. I commented more detailed on LJ.
But it was a pleasure to read nonetheless. Thank you.

Thank you for reading and letting me know what you thought of it.  I'm glad you're not too frustrated with the pace, God knows I am.  I'm dying to write them together again, but as you say, it's at Jack's pace now.  Ennis no longer has final say over when and how often they meet.  Hope you like how it develops.

what was the hooplah about the last one?? I always miss things  ;)

I loved this chapter, Bailey! and I need to go back to work but I couldn't resist commenting here. I loved Bobby in this chapter and the convo between him and Jack, very well done. And I love seeing that Jack and Ennis are slowly making their way back to each other and that, even though they've both changed, sometimes for Jack it's like having that best friend again.

And, I love your quick updates, spoil away!  ::)

Morning.

Liked this chapter...and like the pace at which you're going.  Weeks go by, work gets done, Bobby has started rehab, and the guys are moving closer emotionally.  Jack especially is moving...fighting against what he wants, to be sure it will be strong enough this time.  Ennis fighting to continue his growth as a person, for Jack and for himself, and to prove to Jack that his love is strong enough this time.

Like your Lureen. Strong business woman, so why take it from Old Man Twist?  Would like to have Parkie and Freddy visit, too.  Now, that would be something! Old Man Twist would really go apoplectic over that!  But, it would validate to Jack what Ennis has told him, and rebuild more of the trust that Jack wants and needs.  Now as to Danny...

Thanks for the quick update.  Also posted something on Brokeback_Slash.

Thank you so much for your comments.  Are you reading my mind?  See bolded sentence above.

I'm glad you like how these old boys are finally becoming men.  ;)  I wish they'd move faster though.  I want them together and happy, but I think it's gonna be a little while longer, and even then, it won't be a bed of roses.  Thanks for sticking me and my pacing in this one.  My stuff usually moves a lot faster, but there are things here that can't be rushed, as you noted, like Bobby's rehab.

Slow dancin'
« Reply #62 on: January 26, 2007, 04:11:33 pm »
My heart goes out to these guys. 19 years have gone by, each has gone through personal hells and triumphs, and they've just been traveling in almost a full circle. It's SNIT, 19 years later. Jack is lying there, wanting Ennis to accept what he's already given to him, and wanting Ennis to give what Jack already knows he wants, but unsure if Ennis can really accept what's offered or even really make his own offer. Ennis is by the fire, staring at the flames which consumed him, wanting to accept what he knows Jack has already given to him but unsure whether he can, and wanting to give the same to Jack in return but unsure whether Jack will accept when he offers, and still somewhat ashamed for thinking that way and being who he is. Damn! Get into that tent!

Ennis, it's time so stop dancin' in the dark with Jack. Time to lead him by the hand to the dance floor, and dance with him and even kiss him under the lights, and stand with him in front of everyone while the fireworks go off overhead and all around. You'll find out those who are your real friends and family. And if some of the good ol' boys react harshly, it will be decision time for John, too. Will he remain alone surrounded by everyone, or also step under the lights?

And talk to each other, really talk, tell each other what you saw, how you feel, and make that offer and ask whether the other will accept it. Then, accept it and hand it back without reservation.

Thanks to Danny for being Ennis' sponsor, not just at AA but also in his journey to acceptance of himself. In doing so, Danny has also accepted what's on the shelves inside his own self, and is able to sort through his life and move on.

You have brought us rich, complex characters who wrestle with problems of real life. That's why I look forward to each chapter, and do not look forward to reading "The End". Thanks.

Well you cut me to the quick with some kind of abandon
and I'm pouring over every word in my mind
And it isn't making sense 'cause it's coming back at random
and I already forgot what I expected to find
So maybe it's the wrong game; I shut down the replay
maybe it's a case of hardness of heart
but I'm down for the count and there's got to be someway
to clear out whatever keeps us apart
Now I haven't got a chance if there's no silver lining
I'm far past the point of doing what's right
I can still strike the match that'll start the mountains shining
there might be something new in that light
I'll do this and I'll do that
I'll be burning canyons for you
I'll do this and I'll do that
and I will wait forever if you'll be there

Love interrupted, again.  Sometimes I think Jack has the same problem as Ennis.  He doesn't think he deserves Ennis' love, and looks for every way to prove it to himself that Ennis doesn't really love him as much as he loves Ennis.  He just can't accept yet what Ennis keeps trying to say and give.  Then he goes and acts in tandem with Ennis in that terrible situation.  "We aren't together." ??!!  The hell you arent'!!

Hope does lie within.  The kiss, the climax, the glances between them, not having to say out loud what the words they need to say, Jack standing up for Ennis's way of doing things.  Now, Ennis needs to take Jack to the hospital to see Danny, and the three of them need to talk.  Jack needs his own sponsor now on this journey, and seeing as how he doesn't have one, Danny will look them both in the eye at tell it like it is.  Also, Parkie and Fred need to take Jack aside.  Parkie and Fred have their own fears and compromises; Jack could learn from that, how Ennis had to compromise to save himself and find himself and find his way to a health relationship with Jack.

Way to go, Kurt.  I ilike how you had Kurt handle what he found out about Ennis.  Had my doubts at the end of the last chapter.  How many other "Kurts" wouldhave/actually have issued an ultimatum to his fiance: me or your queer dad/brother/etc.?  I think it is a sign of true love and maturity that Kurt will rethink his preconceptions about gays to have a full live with Junior.

John has a lot to mull over.  His son took over the situation, knocked him on his ass unceremoniously in front of his friends, and then in relief when all was over hugged his own son and ex-wife and mother but not him.  When John pulled himself painfully up the porch and into the house, wonder what he was thinking.  Will lit make a difference?

Thanks again for updating so often.  It keeps the story alive.

We've been together now for such a long time
Through every trial we'd ever care to go
When I look back I almost can't believe it
We're not the same people that we used to know
With all the years behind me spent pretending
I didn't need someone like you around
It makes it even harder to imagine
The life I'd be livin', if I hadn't found
Someone to hold me, the way that you do
Someone who needs me, the way I need you
Someone to show me a way that is true
Someone who loves me, the way that I love you

Holding Someone

Evenin'.

Thought a lot about the last three chapters.  The deconstruction of the Twist family, the "good ol' boys" and how they handle people they think are different, Jack and Ennis, Sarah and John, Lureen and Lou.  How the times have changed Ennis and Jack.

Like how you have Ennis moving forward at his pace now, never wavering, eyes on the goal ahead.  And like how Jack moves back and forth, weaving in and out, two steps forward and one step back, trying too hard sometimes not to admit he wants what Ennis has offered, but still with his eyes on the goal ahead. The years apart may have changed them in how they approach each other, but not in the fundamentals of their relationsip.

And now, Ennis is the man of action.

In '67 Jack hustled up to Wyoming to find Ennis.  This time, Ennis is the one red-lining it to get back to Jack.

Jack admits he needs someone to hold him, and Ennis is there. Back in the tent that first night, Jack took the initiative and reached for Ennis.  Now, he seems to be initiating a relationship again, but along the lines of what Ennis used to want. But Ennis doesn't want that any more; Ennis wants what Jack used to want, together always forever. Ennis can't stand having Jack close without touching him any more, took the initiative twice in two days, and this time simply said "Fuck It" and took Jack in his arms.

Danny needs help, and Ennis doesn't abandon him to the "doctor" from the VA.  He takes action and gets him help, in the form of Detective Lou.

Some potential clouds seem to be gathering on the horizon; nothing which our guys and their true families and friends can't handle.  A storm may ensue and bring a downpour, but a downpour would also cleanse the earth, and help the living flourish in its wake.

Thanks again.  Have I told you how much I enjoy how this story unfolds?!

When I find myself alone in my house and in my head
And I blow the candles out and I take myself to bed
And I’m old enough to realize, but I’m young enough to know
When the Lord closes the door, he opens a little window.
When sleep closes my eyes and sends me searching for you
And I’m feelin’ blue as the sky without your love to carry me through

Glad to see the guys finally getting it together. Jack obviously put a lot of thought into this "reunion," what with bringing the tent along. Wonder what his dad, Ludie and Wayne will think when the two of them don't come home? Or, worse, what either of them may think about trying because of that.

Oh, Danny. Such a waste. Your demons caught up with you, the worst of them being your parents and Dr. Baker. Hope you found peace where you are now. And hope Dr. Baker doesn't. Wait 'til Ennis finds out.

Like your Lureen more and more. Especially that talk about finding Vets who went missing after WWII. Serves them right if they spend the rest of their lives looking over their shoulders.

Great chapter. Danny's door and window closed, but Jack and Ennis found new doors and windows to open with each other. And Lureen has found a new window, not seeing the wheelchair first, just her son.

Thanks.

You said once I was your treasure, and I saw your face in every star
The promises we make at night, oh that's all they are unless we fill them with faith and love they're empty as a howlin' wind.
Now darlin' I just wanna be back in your arms, back in your arms again.
Back in your arms, back in your arms again.
You came to me with love and kindness, but all my life I’ve been a prisoner of my own blindness.
I met you with indifference, and I don't know why.
Now I wake from my dream; I wake from my dream to this world where all the shadow and darkness and a dark sky unfurls.
And all the love I’ve thrown away and lost, honey I’m longing for again.
Now there's nothing that I wouldn't do if I could be back in your arms, back in your arms again.

Evenin'.

So, they've come home to each other, at long last.

The homecoming in the tent [shades of Brokeback and all those fishing trips, another homecoming of sorts] was perfect for these two. So open to each other, not like before; spending time with each other emotionally and talking things out, all in the safety of the tent which always meant someplace safe for them. Had to chuckle at the sight of Ennis rushing out to the saddlebag; they're young enough for the unbridled passion between them, but old enough to appreciate that a little KY would make their love-making that much better.

Now, home to Ennis' trailer, I hope. Then, into the home Jack grew up in, to face everyone together. Ennis needs a little more time, but not much. Danny's death will have a profound effect on Ennis, one that, I hope, will make him realize that he has to live now and not at some future time however close at hand.

Always great. I do really like this story. Or have I told you that before? Thanks.

Life, so they say, is but a game and we let it slip away.
Love, like the Autumn sun, should be dyin' but it's only just begun.
Like the twilight in the road up ahead, they don't see just where we're goin'.
And all the secrets in the Universe, whisper in our ears
And all the years will come and go, take us up, always up.
We may never pass this way again.
We may never pass this way again.
We may never pass this way again.

Dreams, so they say, are for the fools and they let 'em drift away.
Peace, like the silent dove, should be flyin' but it's only just begun.
Like Columbus in the olden days, we must gather all our courage.
Sail our ships out on the open sea. Cast away our fears
And all the years will come and go, and take us up, always up.
We may never pass this way again.

Hi Jack.  Glad to hear you're sticking with the boys for the whole journey.  Thank you for saying it's beautiful.

Is the problem with the link something I'm doing or not doing, do you think?  I'm not very knowledgeable about things like that.

This story was really hard to read in parts. But now it's all good. And how good it is, like Mandy already said.
Other than many readers, I was proud of your Ennis from the moment on he went to AA the first time (although I could have slapped him on the back of his head for Jack):

Quote
From chapter three:
Ennis stood up and did one of the bravest things he’d ever done in cold blood. “Howdy,” he said to the men and women on folding chairs. “My name’s Ennis Del Mar and I’m an alcoholic.”

That really was such a huge step for Ennis.  Just getting him to admit he has a problem is a huge step, as I perceive his character.  I'm glad you were rooting for him; he didn't have a lot of fans for a while there  ;D

Standin' in the daylight

Afternoon.

Good two chapters, covering lots of ground for Jack and Ennis.

I remember back in Ch. 28, during the party, where Ennis and Jack were dancing away from prying eyes [so they thought!], and I thought Ennis should be doing this in the daylight with Jack.  Then later, Jack wanted to be with Ennis, but only if Ennis was willing to stand up in front of others in the open, and not be ashamed of Jack and who they are to each other.  Now, here he is, they are.  In front of everyone, together.  Standing up for each other in the face of prejudice and hatred, but also in front of those who are their true friends.

Ennis has come a long way.  So has Jack.

Glad they're off to the Wake together, alone. Need some time alone after the morning they've had.  Speaking of the Wake, will Elvin be there? May provide a clue to Danny's state of mind the last month before he died.

Do like the relationship between Junior and Kurt, and how Kurt is handling his own feelings.  He also has come a long way.

Alma hasn't.  Think her knowledge that Ennis loved Jack before he married her has tinged her feelings for her own daughters as well as for Ennis.  Even for Danny, who saved her life and her son's life.  She hasn't moved forward since she was married or since the divorce; she hasn't learned to judge a person by his actions, not his sexuality.  Ennis? Jack? Monroe? She's only moved sideways after all these years, maybe even backwards.

Left a post at BBS before this one; had some new thoughts.  Got a little long-winded.

Thanks again for the story.

Wonderful comments.  Thank you.  Especially what you say about Alma.  I felt as though the incident with Monroe being a suspected pedophile would have sent Alma sideways (great way to describe it, by the way) into the comfort of her faith.  She seemed like a churchgoer in the film, and I could see this becoming a bigger part of her life.

I didn't see your other post, but will look for it.  I love seeing things from another perspective.

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows when
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another

It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on the way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

Still Seein' Each Other...
« Reply #96 on: February 19, 2007, 04:40:46 pm »
Afternoon.

Have been thinking about the Wake.  Ennis and Jack did things together, as partners, a couple.  Looking at each other, knowing without saying.  And at the end, Jack wanted to be with Ennis when they told the group they had to leave; not doing separate things to leave faster, doing them together.

Freddy had a lot to say, and Jack seemed to absorb it. Good words about doing things together, and not holding back bad news, and relying on each other, letting the other support him when he needs it.  Jack still has lingering doubts about his relationship with Ennis, and may always have them.  But he has chosen a course, and plans to stick with it.

Also, the funeral for John.  Don't think Jack will ever cry for John.  Maybe just feel the continued sadness for a life not spent well, and for not having any more opportunities to hear those words from John that he never heard and probable never would hear.  Hope jack doesn't spend his life worrying over something that never could have been; he should just concentrate on what he has with Ennis and what that can and will be if he does.

Lureen is good for the two of them.  Says what needs to be said. Like Freddy.

Liked how Jack and Ennis ended up on the glider once again.  Seems to be one of their "thinking" spots.  This time, Ennis kissed Jack in the bright of day, where anyone could have seen them.  He's definitely come a long way.

And Danny's Will.  Really wish Ennis and Jack would travel to San Diego.  Ennis hasn't travelled much, except around the coffee pot looking for the handle...and to Texas.  They need a change of location, a vacation from Wyoming and Texas, from the whole situation...a chance to be somewhere they can feel more comfortable with themselves in the open.  Besides, the weather is so much better than in Wyoming!  Ennis and Jack at the beach...would like to see that!

Thanks again for this story.

Finer Relationship
« Reply #98 on: February 22, 2007, 01:05:38 pm »
Mornin'.

Glad to see it's two steps forward and only a half step back now. Ennis has learned, and is able to give good advice to Matt, but will he accept it? And, will Ennis listen to his own advice?

Jack And Ennis' relationship now reminds me of the Clint Black song, "[Love is] Something That We Do." Love isn't somewhere that we fall, it's something that we do. Do for each other. For Ennis, love has always been actions rather than words, and now he's started to add words to his actions. Jack has always understood the love behind Ennis' actions [except the awful, almost unforgivable action of casting him off out of fear], but has always needed words with the actions. I'm glad they both have realized that the other needs a combination of words and actions, and that they do both for each other.

Wish they had decided to go to San Diego for the reading. It would have been a nice get-away, to regroup on their own for a few days.

The Remington is worth a small fortune, but what price can you put on something of beauty that reminds you of a place, a time, a feeling, a person you love and thought was gone forever? Ennis needs to keep it and enjoy it for the rest of their lives.

Thanks for the update.

Thank you for these wonderful comments.  That's exactly how I see Jack and Ennis's relationship now: two steps forward, half a step back, still striving for a balance.  And I love that you mentioned how easy it is to give advice to others without taking it to heart ourselves.  Happens to me all the time.

PS: I think you're right about Ennis holding on to that painting.  ;)

Afternoon.

Well, another great chapter, especially the last line.  Great imagery.  They seem to have found the love they thought lost, and are bound together. And their love does burn bright and did get too hot for Ennis once before, but not now.   They and their love have come around, full circle, back to each other.

But, like in the last chapter, advice is given but not taken.  Jack needs to take his own advice.  He begged Ennis not to keep anything important from him.  But, at the Wake he admitted to Freddy that he had to be honest with Ennis and tell Ennis about his past during the years they were apart.  Yet, so far, with his "Dad"'s death, he hasn't. Time for Jack to take his own advice, and have another long talk with Ennis.  And for Ennis, to have a long talk with Jack.  I know they are at the point that it is important, and won't drive them apart.

Now Matt....Get on the phone to NYPD!!  Maybe invite your friend to visit rural Wyoming.

Also, what "practice" did Danny give up in California to move to Riverton? Don't recall that from prior reading.  Will have to review those chapters.  Unless you happen to have that information on the tip of your pen...

Still don't like the idea of them moving back to Childress.  Even with an extended support system, there's too much baggage and potential danger for Jack in Texas. They didn't get all of the courtroom shooters.

Wow!  Keep it coming...  Will not like seeing this end.

Thank you once again for your wonderful comments.  You really do understand what's going on in these character's heads.  It is indeed time for a long talk between Jack and Ennis.  I think Mrs. Twist's confession to her son will give him the impetus to tell Ennis everything.

Thank you for hanging in there.  This is my longest BBM series and it's not over yet.  As you say, they didn't get those courtroom shooters.

PS: Danny was a psychiatrist, but there's no reason you should remember that.  It was mentioned only once.

Really liked this part: "“I don’t like that kind a thinkin’. Whut good is it, anyway? We got whut we got right now, Jack. Let’s be smart this time.”

“That’d be a nice change,” Jack traced the whorls of Ennis’s ear with the tip of his nose."

Ennis realizes, and Jack does, too, that what they have is still somewhat fragile, and they have to concentrate on it, and work at it, so they don't make the same mistakes they did before. Jack was giving Ennis his "space," willing to let Ennis go alone to graduation and the wedding. But Ennis made a promise, and intends to keep it, and take Jack with him both times...wonderful!!

Still don't like Texas...seems like it was a bad idea back in 1964, when Jack head down there to ride the rodeo circuit. What will they do, other than help Bobby and be a magnet for those who don't like Jack in particular for what he did, and the two of them in general for who and what they are.

Still, bring it on!

Good that Jack had a talk with Matt. And Bobby is great as always ["Gross!"]...looks like a picture will be worth a thousand words regarding the relationship between his Daddy and Ennis.

Thanks again.

[Left this at Brokeback_Phoenix, too.]

I'll be in Miami for the next three days, and I won't have access to my files, so I won't be posting IBSY again until Thursday.  Jean the Wonder Beta did a lightnin' proof on Chapter Forty-Five so I could post before I got under weigh for the wilds of south Florida.  Please don't hesitate to point out any typos we missed in our rush, and I'll edit when I get home.  I'll miss you guys, but a premiere showing of Alatriste in a Latino theater sounded like too much fun to pass up.

Here's the link to Love Regained - Chapter 45 of IBSY: http://baileymoyes.livejournal.com/90801.html#cutid1

This chapter is a natural breaking point anyway (I hope), and there will be that big barbecue in the next one.

Seeing You Standing Tall...
« Reply #110 on: March 08, 2007, 11:38:46 pm »
Evenin'.

Feels like the calm before the storm. Carl is the first scurries of clouds and an ill wind. LD brings on the darker clouds and swirling eddies. This BBQ is going to be hot...in more ways that potato salad.

Ennis stood up to Carl, and didn't run. He's standing with Jack, next to Jack, and his new life. They've got their love to keep them strong.

Jenny will be the wild card at the party. Unexpected, seeing others without years of knowing them, maybe seeing things and people that others would dismiss as ordinary but really aren't.

Can't wait for Ennis to meet LD. LD will be surprised and maybe not pleased at the changes in Jack, and at Ennis. Could we hope for a passionate hug'n'kiss in front of him, which leads to increased blood pressure, which leads to a coronary? Probably not, but worth the thought, anyway. Wonder what bad things he's up to?

Thanks again. Looking forward to the other guests arriving, so the party can begin in earnest.

Mornin'.

Well, the BBQ is over. Some fireworks, but not entirely expected.  A physical "catfight" was not on the horizon for me! But, still, the aftermath may come up to bother them.

*** "There were even one or two that had a fair idea of what the real bone of contention was, but they spread their tales in low tones over shots of whiskey in the back booths of honky-tonks, leaning on the fence while the bull did his business with the cows, or down at the junkyard taking potshots at the rats. They simmered, while the rest of the town boiled over with loose talk." ***

Maybe it would be a good thing to move on and away, even if Bobby isn't completely healed.

Ennis continues to surprise Jack, and me.  Ready to meet Eby and his cronies anywhere, anytime, and backing up Jack and not backing down.  Asking Randall if he wanted to share a drink, knowing what Randall was to Jack, and Jack to Randall.  Closure, and yet maybe something else.  And later, letting Jenny go.  Hardest thing for a father, especially when his daughter is so young yet so grown up.  Miss Danny's counsel for Ennis; glad to see Ennis remembers him and what he said, and puts it to good use in his life.

Jack did some more growing in those few moments with the three of them. When they were at the party at Rally's place [Chapter 15], Jack told Ennis that he had always and would always love him, but couldn't be with him.  *** “I do love ya, Ennis. I never stopped. It ain’t somethin’ I can turn on and off like a light switch. I love ya, and I ain’t never gonna forgit ya. How do ya forgit someone that gave ya a taste a heaven and hell? Every time I meet a man, my first thoughts are of how he’s like you or different. I cain’t help it.” ***

Now, watching and hearing Ennis and Randall at the BBQ, he again realized how much he did always love Ennis and still did, and how much he had sought, and never found, a duplicate for Ennis.  There is no duplicate.

Ennis and Jack have come a long way in their relationship, and in their own self-confidence. Together, they are more than the sum of their two parts.

Maybe Randall will take stock and decide to do something about his life, too.  Especially after the "catfight."

Dallas...Hmmm.  Can understand the excitement for Jenny and Bobby.  But, lots went on there; lots can happen in that big city.  Good thing Lou is with them, and they're on Lou's home turf.  Still...  And, still wondering who the secret witness is, who swore that Jack had nothing to do with the drug money laundering scheme, and convinced Lou to look at it from a different angle. Have a hunch. And, still wondering what happened to Rally the roadrunner.

Once again, a great chapter.

Did see a few things you might want to look into:
In about the 10th paragraph, think it should read: "In fact, he was so..."
In the kitchen after the BBQ, think it should read: "...Lou said, and held up his..."
Later in the kitchen, think it should read: "Ennis fetched a deep sigh at the thought..."

Thanks again.  Looking forward to the next chapter.

Mornin'.

Well, finally, Ennis found the shirts, and realized what they represent to Jack, and now to him. Jack has always loved Ennis, and when Ennis pushed him away, he tried to find someone to replace him and never could. Remember that Jack realized at one point that all the others that he got close to looked like Ennis in some way; he was always seeing Ennis. The shirts reminded Jack each time he saw them, that he had given his heart and soul to Ennis in 1963; Ennis sees that now.

Jack still hasn't gotten it through his thick skull and through the fog and lingering bitterness of their years apart and the uncertainty that goes with it, that Ennis also gave his heart and soul to Jack in 1963. How many times does Ennis have to tell that to Jack, that Jack is the only man and only person he has loved, period?

The same love, two different ways of showing it.

It isn't too late. Jack never said he was going to quit Ennis, only that he wished he knew how. Jack knew he never could quit Ennis, no matter how much he tried or wanted to. Ennis held his heart and soul.

Maybe now it's time for Ennis to return Jack's heart and soul to him, and ask Jack to give it to him once again, this time with a mature love tempered in the fires of the years between. A true test.

Thanks for the story. Looking forward to finding out what happened when Jack left and when Ennis went looking for him with the shirts clutched to his heart.

Well, all I can say is thanks. I already posted to your journal, and only today found your note.  Again, you've crafted a wonderful, complex story about complex people with complex emotions.  I hope Jack and Ennis are enjoying their journey home to Texas as much as I have the journey you sent us on.

Looking forward to journey's end, even though I will miss driving with you on this one.

Thanks again.

I know it's been forever since I updated, but for anyone still reading, here's the link to Chapter Sixty, the epilogue of "I'll Be Seeing You":http://baileymoyes.livejournal.com/108577.html#cutid1

It's been a long strange trip.  Thanks for sharing it with me.
