yep he was most popular in the 50s 60s...

Hey, It is the right time!! LOL!

some you have to hear to really get how pretty they are...that "Still" is just so pretty...

I'll look them up tho' I'm sure I've heard them.  It was uproariously funny, but in all the WV hot-tub-singin-at-dirge-slowness, we discovered that a few old Hank Williams ballads are gender-neutral!  (It made perfect sense to honor him because he died near where we stayed.)  It was after some whine ::) so I mistrusted my ears - but re-listening the next day, I still thought so..I think these are they:

Im so lonesome I could cry
Hear the lonesome whiperwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
Im so lonesome I could cry

Ive never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide its face and cry

Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die
That means hes lost the will to live
Im so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
Im so lonesome I could cry

Cold, Cold Heart
I tried so hard my dear to show that youre my every dream.
Yet youre afraid each thing I do is just some evil scheme
A memory from your lonesome past keeps us so far apart
Why cant I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart

Another love before my time made your heart sad and blue
And so my heart is paying now for things I didnt do
In anger unkind words are said that make the teardrops start
Why cant I free your doubtful mind, and melt your cold cold heart

Youll never know how much it hurts to see you sat and cry
You know you need and want my love yet youre afraid to try
Why do you run and hide from lies,to try it just aint smart
Why cant I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart

There was a time when I believed that you belonged to me
But now I know your heart is shackled to a memory
The more I learn to care for you,the more we drift apart
Why cant I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart

I Can't Help It
today i passed you on the street
and my heart fell at your feet
I can't help it if i'm still in love with you
somebody else stood by your side
and he looked so satisfied
I can't help it if i'm still in love with you.

A picture from the past came slowly stealing
As i brushed your arm and walked so close to you
Then suddenly i got that old time feeling
I can't help it if i'm still in love with you.

It's hard to know another's lips will kiss you
And hold you just the way i used to do
Oh, heaven only knows how much i miss you
I can't help it if i'm still in love with you.
"Laß sein. Laß sein."

yes because at the time songs were meant to be very personal...they weren't writing for the radio audience (or not directed at the audience) but rather to seem like they were singing directly to an individual so the songs used first person a lot....you, me, I...and they could be sung by either male or female stars..

I Envy The Wind - Lucinda Williams from the album Essence

I envy the wind
That whispers in your ear
That howls through the winter
That freezes your fingers
That moves through your hair
And cracks your lips
And chills you to the bone
I envy the wind

I envy the rain
That falls on your face
That wets your eyelashes
And dampens your skin
And touches your tongue
And soaks through your shirt
And drips down your back
I envy the rain

I envy the sun
That brightens your summer
That warms your body
And holds you in her heat
And makes your days longer
And makes you hot
And makes you sweat
I envy the sun
I envy the wind, I envy the rain, I envy the sun, I envy the wind

Eric,

I have a suggestion: "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult...the Romeo and Juliet song. This is the one Jack is talking about in chapter 1 of A Love Born From Steel.

[I'm quoting myself..  ;D]

Oh, well, no. Eric, forget that suggestion. It doesn't really fit lyrics-wise I think. Now that I have read your comment on why certain songs bomb..

Hanging by a thread - Jann Arden Richards

When I cry, I close my eyes
And every tear falls down inside
And I pray with all my might
That I will find my heart in someone's arms
When I cry, cry
When I cry, when I am sad
I think of every awful thing I ever did
When I cry, there is no love
No, there is nothing that can comfort me enough
When I cry
Cry, cry
(chorus)
The salt inside my body ruins
Everyone I come close to
My hands are barely holding up my head
Oh, I'm so tired of looking at my feet
And all the secrets that I keep
My heart is barely hangin' by a thread
Hangin' by a thread
Oh, look at me
At all I've done
I've lost so many things that I so dearly loved
I lost my soul
I lost my pride
Oh, I lost any hope of having a sweet life
So I cry
Cry, cry

:'( So very sad... especially that sweet life....

This is a good one I was listening to this morning from The Essential Bob Dylan

It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last.
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast.
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun,
Crying like a fire in the sun.
Look out the saints are comin' through
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense.
Take what you have gathered from coincidence.
The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets.
This sky, too, is folding under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home.
All your reindeer armies, are all going home.
The lover who just walked out your door
Has taken all his blankets from the floor.
The carpet, too, is moving under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you.
Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you.
The vagabond who's rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore.
Strike another match, go start anew
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.
