Please tell us what activity you would most like to participate in at the Memorial Day event in Estes Park, Colorado. I would like to arrange for a special activity for BetterMostians and their friends only!! If there's something you would like to do that isn't on the list, record it here.

And the all-day hike takes an early lead!! We could certainly arrange for sack lunches to take along with us. The hike could be guided or unguided.

Hiking still leads but others are catching up to it. Maybe I'll add reenactments to the list. I have a volunteer to reenact the beating-on-a-shirt-in-the-middlde-of-a-stream-while-wearing-only-boots scene already! That should be a hit.

I also got a volunteer for the reunion run down the staircase. Now all I need is Jack in a red shirt.

Since I've added a few things, I made it so you can change your vote if you like.

Even if you can't come, you can still vote! Everyone will be a participant, virtually or in person!!

What? Nobody wants to lasso, wrestle, and roll down hills??

I would be glad to talk about Rocky Mountain wildflowers a little while hiking. With all this moisture we're getting, there will be tons of wildflowers!

Even if I can come, I would be on the road trip. But since you encouraged everyone to vote, I did so.
I voted for lassoing/wrestling/rolling down hills  ;D.  We all know the olympic games, some may have heard of the Scottish Highland-Games and there are also Friesian Games (with exotic subjects like wellington boots throwing contest). So why not having our own, fun Western games/BBM games?

  • running down the staircase would make a wonderful fitting category.
  • (Faked) falling off the horse
  • shouting "ALMA!" on the top of your lungs
  • pitching up a tent as fast as possible (but the tent has to look right  ;D)(could be played in teams of two or more)
  • dragging an reluctant victim to a make-believe dancefloor and throwing hair like crazy
  • carrying water in buckets from point A to point B
  • ...and on and on...

Some of these may/will overlap with the reenacting of scenes. You could work out different categories: best reenacting, fastest time, funniest performance.....

I would love participating in such BBM games.

Just to clarify "scene re-enactments" further, here are some possible ideas:

Solo Impromptu Line Reading. Contestants are handed a piece of paper with a line. Such as: "You pair a deuces lookin' for work, I suggest you get your scrawny asses in here pronto" or  "I know that I shall meet you . . .  water walkin' Jee-sus, take me awaaaaaay".  (Not the heavier stuff. This is all about having fun.)

Impressions.  Such as:  The Cassie Hair-Swing.  Jack Leaning Against the Truck Provacatively.  Ennis Running After Pack Mules Cursing.  The Jack Rodeo Dance.  Pantomimed Chilean Sheep-Dragging.

Impromptu Dialogues.  Volunteers will be teamed up to read short scenes together.  Such as:  "Hey Monroe, is Alma here? She's in the condiments aisle. The wha? Uh, ketchup. Thanks."

LaShawn Line Reading  (Without stumbling. Extra credit if in one breath.)
"It's a good thing that you and Lu happened along when you did, or else we'd still be stuck on the side of the road in that dern pickup. I told Randall we oughta take the car, 'course he don't ever listen to me. He wouldn't listen to me if he was goin' deaf tomorrow. I told him it takes more than chewing gum and baling wire to fix that pickup. Well, he's never been very mechanical though."
or:
"When I was right out of SMU I coulda had my pick of pretty much any job in North Dallas, so my pick was Neiman Marcus which was a disaster because, honey, where clothes is concerned, I got no resistance, I was spending more than I made, more than Randall ever will make. We come out here thinking ranching was still big hats and Marlboros, boy, were we behind the times!"
or:
"…and then I pledged Tri Delt at SMU and I sure never thought I'd end up in a pokey little place like Childress, but then I met old Randall here at an Aggie game, and he was an animal husbandry major. So we been here a month, he got the foreman job over at Roy Taylor's ranch. Like it or not, here I am!"

These ideas may look daunting, but they'd be a blast!

I voted for Miniature Golf/horseshoes. I haven't played Miniature Golf in years, and I know I would enjoy that. I'm also thinking in terms of something that wouldn't prove too strenuous for my out-of-shape forty-year-old body, in addition to something that would be inclusive of my accompanying sixty-four-year-old honorary Brokie mom!

I added a few things--there's a sandy beach at Estes Lake. Surrey bikes are tandem bikes where two can ride side-by-side. The Fall River Hydroplant is a historic working hyropower facility.

Yes, you can change your vote if you've already voted!

We are also planning to have a slide show at the hoedown and show all the terrific photography produced during the event!!

Another idea is to combine events, such as a photography hike.

We are definitely planning to have a hayride on Sunday evening with dinner "out" in the woods.

Hey FRontina, could we separate games into "Outdoor games" and "BBM-related indoor games like Scrabble?"  (Not that I think Ennis and Jack played Scrabble a lot.)  Because I would sign up for the indoor ones.

I picked "hike," but I was hoping to be allowed more than one, because actually there are several I'd be amenable to.

I'm not much for games that require any coordination or athletic ability, but Scrabble sounds very fun!

For line reading, maybe we could form a big circle and start reciting the whole movie, taking turns on each line. When you can't think of the next line, you're out!  :-X

I hope you all don't mind me voting. I'm not going on the trip but I couldn't resist taking the poll.  :D

If I WAS going, I would enjoy white water rafting, a photography session and a hayride!

If we were allowed a fourth choice, I would choose an all day hike.  :D

Fine, David, but if I end up going down the rapids UNDER the boat and puking my guts out on a rock like I did last time I went white water rafting, and you aren't there, I'm heading to Indiana with a bullwhip with your name on it!!!

Horseback riding has pulled into first place! I wonder if this had anything to do with the picture of that cute low-startle-point mare I posted on the BBQ thread? The bad news, though, is we will have to charge extra for the horseback riding. It's $24, and you can choose to have that option added when you register. The form will automatically add that in to your bill.

Most activities are included though, such as the hayride dinner we're planning on Sunday night!

We have four people so far interested in horseback riding (is there such a thing as horsefront riding, Front-Rangerwants to know?). So far we have enough people interested in the dinner hayride to fill one haywagon (There are three; each holds 30 people). You now only have two weeks, until April 25, to sign up for activities. Click on the link below!! Thanks!

Yes, but it can be dangerous. I was going to mention Catherine the Great of Russia learning this the hard way. But About.com says that's a myth, that she died in bed of illness.

Heya,

I voted for "park touring", hayride and of course re-enactments (how could I not vote for that one... in this case I'm mostly picturing BBM charades!  :D ).

What exactly would "park touring" entail?  I've never been to Colorado, so seeing the sights sounds good to me.  Hiking and photography would be fun too.  I could imagine combining those two into "park touring."  The hayride dinner sounds great.

I will want to pet the horses, but not ride them.  I do actually know how to ride a horse, but it's an activity that makes me nervous.  I do like horses though.

Can't wait!!!  Whoo-eee!!!

Yes, I'm a low-startle-point horseback rider myself. Any horse that I saddle immediately wants to run off at a gallop!! (That also accounts for most of the stallions I've saddled in my life too LOL!)

Park touring would be driving around in Rocky Mountain National Park, one of the first areas to be named a national park, destination of millions of visitors throughout the world each year, and home of the highest paved road in America!

Friends, Brokies, and BBQers! We are now firming up the slate of activities for Sunday at the BBQ in Estes Park, Colorado! We are trying NOT to overmanage this, just to facilitate. The main thing is to make available a place to assemble, a way to get any equipment needed, and a person to be the point person to organize these activities. If you'd like to be such a point person, please PM me!! I'm planning to head up park tours in the morning, and a photo hike in the afternoon. As far as scene reenactments and BBM-related contests and such go, I'm toying with the idea of having those in the late afternoon just before departing on our dinner hayride, oand/or during the hayride itself. Let us know your thoughts!

Well, hi,

I'm only a very new Bettermoster (registered for the chat, normally on DC Forum) -- but since I'll be there on Sunday, I'll be interested in Scrabble if you have it going.  I'm one of those older indoor types.

I voted for miniature golf, too, but I hope ability doesn't count -- it's been years -- decades!

You'll love the area. I'm not going to the event, but if the tour includes the Big Thompson Valley area, don't miss it; simply wonderful. This was sadly a site of a great tragedy in 1976 when a flash flood swept through, but it was and now remains one of my favorite places. enjoy!

Scoop on the horse back and the Hay ride from LoveEmBoys:

Horse Back Rides:  We're scheduled for the

3:30 Deer Meadows ride -- which is the "easy" ride on the reg form.  13 people registered for that.
4:00 Glacier Basin ride - slightly more challenging ride on reg form.  10 people registered for that.

Riders -- be sure to bring long pants, and absolutely no open-toed shoes for the ride.  Hard soled shoes are best (not sneakers in other words)

We can add people, as long as there is space available.  Since these are regularly scheduled rides, there MAY be other people on the ride with us, but they might also just take the 10/13 of us out as a group.

And she fussed at me because I'm after the 1 month deadline, thus don't qualify for the group rate technically, but I fussed back harder at her and pointed out that we are also doing the hay ride... so she said she'd just give us the good rate.

Hay Ride:
The question came up on the chat session last week about whether there actually was hay on the wagons or not.  Turns out there IS. (yea for the authenticity!)    If you have allergies to grass, they recommend you take allergy pills before the ride.  We can also bring blankets to lay on top of the hay.  If you are allergic to mold -- I really don't think this will be much of an issue, because unless you are opening the bale and separating flakes, if there is any mold in the bales it should just stay put.   Regardless, if you have severe allergies and there is no way you want to ride in the wagon, they can provide a map for where the dinner will be and those folks can hike it easily.

The Hayride picks up at the livery at 5:00 pm.  So those going on the Glacier Basin ride will just be returning.  Those on the Deer Meadows ride should plan to hang out for 30 minutes at the livery.  Obviously non-riders going on the hay ride should plan to arrive at the livery between 4:30 and 5 anyhow.
