Wylie still held the container.  “I’ll get rid of this.”
Ennis shook his head, took the box, placed the green paper covered wire tie and the plastic bag inside it, closed the lid and headed toward the truck.
Ennis looked drained, after they’d struck the tents, Wylie told him to find his favorite spot and just sit, he’d pack the truck alone.  “You wouldn’t know where anything goes and I’ve had more practice.”
Ennis sat on the grassy knoll hugging  his knees, staring at the mountains, lost in time.
When he’d finished Wylie strolled over, squatted down.  “Whenever you’re ready.”

Heart Songs

September 21, 1953
Lightning Flat, Wyoming
8:03 p.m.

Jack curled up in bed, stomach full of cherry cake, hands holding tight to the best birthday present he'd ever gotten - a second-hand harmonica from his favorite uncle.  He'd practiced playing earlier, riding far from the house where only the birds overhead and the black baldies grazing in the tall grass could hear.

Still excited from the day, he squeezed his eyes shut, willing himself to sleep, hoping to continue last night's dream with the pink house and the brown-eyed best friend ….

….someone besides the birds and the cattle to listen to the music that was in his heart.

Marie,
Wonderful way to put it!  The music in our hearts instead of the noise in our minds.

(Thanks, Fern and Clyde.  Clyde, "noise in our minds" is a wonderful way to put it, too!)

Some late Saturday prompts for any Saturday drabblers:

“Ennis, how’d you know what the wind would do?  With the ashes, I mean.”
Ennis’s sour expression mellowed into a sly smile.  “What’s it worth?”
      “Buy you a beer.”
“A big science secret like that?”
      “Okay two.”
“Tell me, what’s a couple nineteen year olds do on a cliff?”
      Wylie shrugged.
“Throw stuff off it, dummy.”  He laughed.  “Jack threw a hand full of gravel, got it right back in his face.  But if you timed it right, when the wind stopped...”
       Wylie shook his head.
“Never was a high school senior, but the college kid owes me two beers.”

Clyde, that is great use of those prompts!  I just went totally blank with them!

Paradise Lost

"Here, read this one, Daddy." Junior settled herself back in bed.

Bedtime Bible Stories.  Ennis cleared his throat and stifled a groan, uncomfortable as always with any talk of sin and salvation.

"Is that what heaven looks like, Daddy?"

He smiled at the colorful pictures of benevolent angels looking down on frolicking children and animals.  He knew exactly what heaven looked like. He closed his eyes, conjuring up the image of sky-blue eyes against the meadows and peaks of Brokeback Mountain and his own brief time in paradise before being abruptly banished from the garden and taking the long, hard fall back to earth.

Interlude Four

"Ya know what Ennis?" asked Jack.
"What?" answered Ennis.
"I think we need a little herb garden," suggested Jack.
"What on gods green earth for?" asked Ennis.
"Well for cooking, don't you like fresh herbs in yer food?" replied Jack.
"How should I know, never had fresh herbs in my food ,"stated Ennis.
"I'm sure you have, yer mama probably used them all the time," said Jack.
"Don't remember no herb gardens," stated Ennis matter-of-factly.
"Well Ennis, my mama had one so I'm sure your's had one too," said Jack.
"So bud, when exactly was it you learned to cook cause last time I checked you couldn't cook worth a shit."
"Well a person can improve on things Ennis."

Mrs. P. wrote  “...like fodder from earth’s garden,”  and closed her journal.
They rode silently, Mrs. P. snored gently in the back seat, Wylie dozed.  Ennis drove, deep in thought, leaving Brokeback again without Jack.  The truck hit a rut, jerked abruptly.  Wylie stirred, shifted, his head came to rest on Ennis’s shoulder.
I look like a damn pillow?  was halfway up Ennis’s throat before sight of the tousled head and peaceful face stopped it.  Oh, what the hell.
Wylie’s radio, tuned to a station in Casper, had Willie Nelson singing, “...turns out to be, someone to watch over me.”
