An Almost Life

Jack forced a smile and nodded as his customer's voice droned on, feigning interest and resisting the urge to shift his eyes to the clock on the wall, knowing it was almost time to – his thoughts stopped short – almost time to what?

Almost time to leave his almost job and head for his almost home.  Where his wife would be so busy and he would be so preoccupied that their conversations would be almost nonexistent.  Where he would almost certainly spend the night staring mindlessly at the television as he drank almost enough to forget that it was almost unbearable.

Two men, each with his own questions, both afraid of the answers.
     “Sleep OK?”
     Ennis nodded.
“Aunt Matt had me put you in Jack’s bed.  No sense a good bed goin a waste.  Couch ain’t comfortable.  Ain’t healthy neither.”
“Thanks for...”  Ennis searched Wylie’s eyes.  “... lookin out for me.”
“No trouble.”  Wylie smiled.  “No trouble at all.”
There was an awkward silence.  Wylie gazed around the room.  “Bet cousin Jack would be glad you’re here.”   The cool Wyoming breeze played through the trees outside.
“Unless you’re on a diet, we better get downstairs, let Aunt Matt finish breakfast before lunchtime.”

Yes, I think Jack would be very glad, indeed.
