Junior and Jenny came runnig up the stairs.  Jumping into Ennis's lap and saying "daddy the sunday school teacher told us the story of Daniel."
"Is that right he asked?"  "what is that story, about?"  "Well she told us about King Nebakanezzer, and the hand writing on the wall !"
"Is that right? And what was it that the handwriting said lil darlin?"  "It said that the Kindom would
fall, because the King had been found wanting."  "He wasn't fit to rule."
"Isn't that sad, daddy." She sighed.  "You never know darlin, what makes the person unfit, to do the job they have.  Maybe its just someone elses opinion." "Maybe they are misunderstood."  "Maybe they wish
things were different."  He turned back to the television, and they ran off to the kitchen, yelling.  "Mama when
is lunch?"

Janice, I always love seeing Ennis and his lil darlins.  And I like this ending especially - that's just like kids, their attention shifts so quickly!

A little late ..... :)

Forever Unsaid

......Love, Junior and Kurt

It had been so many years since she'd died, and Ennis was startled when he recognized his mama's handwriting on Junior's postcard, a memory flashing quickly in his mind's eye…

The unfinished letter waited patiently on the old roll-top desk, written on her good notepaper – pink with a single red rose at the top, used sparingly. He wondered again what had become of it.  If she had known her thoughts would never be completed, would she have changed her words, chosen them more carefully?  But what he remembered most was the stark blank space on the soft pink paper - words that would forever remain unsaid.

LOL!  You and I are on the same wavelength tonight, Janice!   ;)  .....

Sweet Dreams

"You kept me up all night with your tossing and turning, Jack.  Is it the new mattress?"

Jack looked up from his paper and smiled sheepishly. "Sorry, honey. I guess ranch boys like me are used to sleeping on old, lumpy mattresses."

Lureen laughed as she took her coffee cup to the sink. "So, what are you saying? You need an old lumpy mattress to get a good night's sleep?"

Jack looked down into his own coffee cup.  Nope, he didn't need an old, lumpy mattress. Just an old tent, the cold, hard ground and his tall, blond, brown-eyed cowboy.

for yesterday's prompt...

What They Needed

The last visit to the doctor for Jenny emptied his wallet, except for the two twenties he kept against times like this. That would be it for food, and for gas from the cheapest station in town, until the end of next week. Oughta be ok. Alma knew how to shop for a bargain, and maybe he could trade rides out to the ranch with Len. He pulled out the creased bills, just to check they were still there, and on the other side of his wallet, tucked behind his driver's license, the frayed edge of a slip of paper barely showed. He took it out, a supplies list for a week in summer three years gone. Beans, spuds, powdered milk, whiskey, apples, lard, eggs, flour, coffee, sugar, the list returned by the Basque, each item checked off. Ennis remembered the happiness in Jack's voice as he'd run down the list, said, “Ennis, we got everything we asked for, we'll be livin' high this week.”  Ennis had taken the paper from Jack's hand, looked it over, not believing. Damn Basque never brought everything he wrote down. He'd held the list back out to Jack, but Jack waved it off, said, “Give me a hand unpackin' these mules,” so Ennis had stuffed the list into his shirt pocket, and later into his wallet against some time when he figured he'd be the one trailing the mules down to the bridge again. Hadn't happened, so the list of what they needed stayed with him down off the mountain, and after, when he realized what he'd lost, he'd tried to keep it safe, that scrap of Jack's handwriting. Knew he wouldn't see any more.

Oh, my.  That's so touching, Fern.  And so Ennis.

Thanks,
Marie
