Rudderless

He leaned over the crib, instinctively holding his breath as he looked down on his newborn son, unable to shake that strange feeling - part confusion, part awe - that had been with him for days now.

He'd never really longed for a child, and he felt like he'd been given a puzzle with half the pieces missing, been sent on a long journey without a map to hand. He knew how not to be a father, but didn't have a clue how to be one.

"Guess we'll have to figure this out as we go along, bud," he whispered.

Rudderless, Too

He leaned over the crib, instinctively holding his breath as he looked down on his newborn daughter, unable to shake that strange feeling – part confusion, part awe – that had been with him for days now.

He always imagined he'd have a son, and realized with mild surprise that, inasmuch as females were a mystery to him, he wasn't disappointed in the least.  He placed his big, rough hand on top of her tiny, soft one, certain of only thing – that he would always keep her safe.

"Guess we'll have to figure this out as we go along, darlin," he whispered.

Junior and Jenny looked at each other in rapt confusion.   Their delicate faces, which so reminded Ennis
of their mother.  He saw them with pride and a swelling in his heart, every time he looked on them.  He was
reminded of the failure he had made of his marriage.  He loved them.  Of that he had no doubt.  He would
gladly give his life for them.
When they watched him standing outside the truck with Jack.  He knew they were looking at him
in a most curious manner.  He wondered it they could see how much he wanted to go with Jack.  How his
heart had shrunk down to a mite of its former size, as he watched him drive away.  They could never know.
Never would they accept what he and Jack were to each other.  They would hate him!  They would hate
him, and he couldn't take that.  What was left of his heart, would die, if they, hated him,... as much as he
hated himself.

You've captured Ennis so perfectly, Janice.  This scene is so wrenching, I can't watch it.

Precious

Of all the stupid words that came out of L.D.'s mouth, "time is money" had to be the ones he hated the most.  He'd learned that you could always make more money; it was time that was irreplaceable.

It had passed so slowly when he was a boy; it often seemed to be the only thing he had in abundance, and he realized now that he'd spent so much of his time wishing it away.  But now he wanted to catch hold of time and make it stand still, grab it by its edges and stretch it out, capture it whole and push it back, for there was only one thing more precious to him …. and that was the one person with whom he would never have enough time.

Ennis drove over to the laundrymat because Almas said she was moving out.  She had gotten married to
the grocer Monroe.  They had a nice little house now, with rooms for each of the girls.  Alma was finally getting
what she had always wished he would have given her. " A real home."
They were already gone, and the things she said she had for him, were boxed up and sitting on the bottom,
stair.  It didn't look like much, to count for what was the first few years of his adult life.  That cardboard box of
yesterdays.  A flyer from an old movie that they went to.  And his old fishing gear that he had left behind.  He
had gotten new stuff from Jack that replaced the old things he used before..
Ennis picked up the box and turned to leave, heaving it up on his shoulder.  He passed by the old swing set,
they had bought second hand for the girls.  He had worked several weekends to pay for that.  So his girls would
have something "special" as Alma called it.  They would for sure be having a newer and fancier one of those now.
Out with the old, in with the new.  He was the old and beat up, second hand one now.  Replaced by the
shiny new man.  The one that could buy newer and shinier things.
It was his time to be sent to the recycle shop, and the Goodwill bin.  To be replaced and set aside put out in
a box.  Jack is the only one that never left him aside for a new bright and shiny  model.

You're killing me, Janice.  That's so poignant, especially when I think about their last trip together.  :'(
