Out of Sight...

Didn't matter what he was doing, he could be currying his horses or taking the girls for ice cream, the thought would come to him as naturally as his next breath, filling in the spaces between his hearbeats, sometimes giving him hope, other times filling him with despair….

Didn't matter what he was doing, he could be giving his best spiel or helping Bobby with his homework, the thought would come to him as naturally as his next breath, filling in the spaces between his hearbeats, sometimes giving him hope, other times filling him with despair…..

What's he doing now?

With This Ring..

She placed the last dish in the drainer, slipped her ring off, placed it carefully on the counter, and scooped a dab of hand cream, rubbing it slowly on her chapped hands as she listened to the girls chatter while they watched TV.

"Eeewww," Francie covered her eyes. "I don't like mushy kissing.  I'm never doing that."

Junior shrugged.  "That's 'cause you're too young – that kind of stuff is for married people."

"But Mama and Daddy never do that!"

She looked at the gold band as she slid it back down her finger, the words echoing loudly in her ears.

(Nice to see you here, Dagi!  :))

A Cold World

"Hey, darlin." Ennis stomped his boots on the mat and leaned down to accept Junior's kiss, laying his hand against her cheek.

"Daddy, you're freezing!" Junior tugged on his arm. "Come on in and warm up. Guess that arctic cold front they've been talking about is coming through."

He sat in front of the fireplace long enough to take the edge off the bitter chill, but he knew better than to expect real warmth.  It had been years now since that last postcard; long enough to know that a world without Jack Twist would always be a cold place.

I posted a longer version on the Jack/Ennis fan-fic thread..... 168 words, a little over...

********************************

Holding a steaming cup of coffee, Jack looked out the kitchen window at the fresh blanket of snow covering the ranch in the early morning light, blotting out the rough edges of the land and buildings, but not blotting out the rough edges of his heart and life.  Four months without Ennis, four months without any contact, four months enduring the stares and questions and foul mouth of his father.  Ennis would be married by now, settling into a life with Alma. The thought sent arctic cold shivers running through his body despite the warmth cast by the radiator.

He heard a vehicle pull up outside.  "Must be the truck from Murchison's with the wire, best get out and see to it, if ya got the time," said his dad abruptly.  Jack acknowledged the command, got up, put on his hat, coat and gloves, and headed out into the cold past the calendar showing decorated palm trees at some beach in Mexico.  No sense arguing, he'd lose anyway.

Beautifully written, as always, cwby.  And a wonderful use of all the prompts.  You're not over with your word count at all, btw - I believe anything up to 300 words or so is fine! Thanks for drabbling!
